Weapon types?

I'm having a hard time understanding the differences between weapon types.  For my mage it's easy - equip the best staff.  For rogues in my party I choose between melee (twin daggers) or ranged (bows/crossbows), so that's easy enough.

But for warriors I can't find any stats or explanation differentiating between the various weapon types.  I understand the core split between 2-handed and 1-handed w/shield.  But what's the difference between 1-handed weapons like swords, axes, and maces?  Do I just equip the best item I have and ignore the weapon type?  In many RPGs the weapon types have different modifiers vs certain types of armor (like maybe swords and axes are better vs light armor while maces are better vs heavier armor)...or have different speeds (i.e. swords may be faster and hit more often than axes).

Likewise for greatswords vs 2-handed battle axes.  What are the relative strengths/weaknesses of these weapon types?

I can't seem to find anything describing differences like this so...does it make a different in the game?

Thanks!

It does make a difference.

Swords are slower than axes and maces. A 200 dps 1h sword might have 180 dmg, while a mace might have 140 dmg but hit faster. What this means is that skills such as payback strike will hit harder with the sword. 1h reavers will lose health faster with a mace when using dragon rage.

On the other hand, if you have something like generating guard on hit, the mace will generate it quicker.

Thanks Caveman, I was pretty sure there must be differences...but where can I look up those type of weapon stats?  Examining the weapons in the game there doesn't seem to be anything that indicates weapon speed...or do I have to do the math between DPS and damage per hit to try and figure out how fast the weapon hits?

I don't mind that the combat mechanics are complicated, but I don't like all of it hidden and wish it was more transparent.  I mean, I'm about 42 hours in and have found almost no decent 1-handed swords, but have quite a few high DPS 1-handed axes...so I've been giving Cassandra an axe.  But that's because I can't accurately see what the benefits of faster/slower weapons...nor is there any info about which weapons may be better vs. specific armor types (light, medium, heavy).

As far as I have seen no weapon vs armor dynamic in DA:I.

For 1H Sword/Maces/Axes beside attack speeds the biggest difference is that they use different weapon parts need to upgrade at the blacksmith. Most weapon hilts schematics are exclusive to one of the three.

This dynamic slightly changes for 2H weapons:

-Swords/Axes have an aoe basic attack. While the Mauls basic attack (Big Hammers) are limited to single target but swing a bit faster to even out the damage.

Melee rogues share this trait when using Dagger (single) vs Dual Dagger (aoe). From what i see on forums most rogues go main hand aoe and whatever has the next best dps off-hand since main hand determines you attack swing.

Dumb question maybe, So silverite in heavy armor can make it were any class can use it. Does anyone know if the same can happen with weapons? A KE with a two hander would be so awesome.

That works on armors, but not on weapons, the class restriction is always set.

Unless your Two Hander has tanking abilities, I find it best to give them a maul, even if you have slightly stronger axes and swords available. As mauls only attack a single target, they're less likely to draw aggro away from your tank.

Rogues use all dual wield. Daggers have no advantage over dual blade that i could determine. The hissing wastes dual blade is the best dagger in the game and is easy to access early.

Twohanded users should be able to handle some agro. AoE all the way. If not, might as well just pick up a shield imo.

Dual bllades are much, much better than standard daggers.

Not only do they do more damage - and AOE, to boot - but combos often give you a free cast of Twin Fangs.
