Hey people.
Bioware did advertise that companions could leave you. But after 2 playthroughs I've never experienced this even once. For this playthrough, I will attempt to make EVERYONE hate me and leave to put this to the test.
I could need some advice on who to bring on what missions, and what choices in important places are needed for "greatly disapproves". It can get tricky because some may approve while other disapprove, causing a sort of balancing scale which will hurt this goal. Please come with any tips and advice you can think of. I will initially recruit all companions.
This will take some time, as this will also be a completionist play-through. But I will try to keep this updated.
Will attempt a "everyone leaves me" playthrough, need some advice.

I'm sorry I don't have anything much to contribute in terms of advice, but bumping because I'm really interested to see how your playthrough turns out! BW was talking about it being possible to only finish it with one companion left, but like you I've never seen any hint (in my game or others) of any of the companions leaving after you recruit them short of Sera (who you can tell to leave, I think) and Blackwall (because of his quest). So I'm intrigued.
I suspect this won't help because we all know who Bioware's "one companion left at the end" is probably going to have been, but Solas hated me to here's some tips from an unintentional pro: don't ask him thoughtful questions. Diss the Fade. You can get a disapproval from him by letting that elf in Crestwood join the Wardens even if he isn't with you at the time, and that only affects his approval and nobody else's so it's a freebie. Do all that and if you're anything like me you'll get a few options to say horrible things to him back at Skyhold - I never said them but I presume you can escalate things from there.
Good luck with the others!

Well, Sera cussed me out once her approval got too low but I still got to choose if she would leave or not. I think my elven character was too 'elfy' for her. She's the only one I've managed to upset to that degree.
I don't know if she can just ditch you without you getting the option to tell her to stay. I've heard she gets angry and might leave if you drink from the well, but I'm not there yet.
So if you want Sera to leave: Side against the wardens (I think?), be very elfy (if elven), kick peasants.

Isn't it possible that "finishing the game with just one companion left" requires the player to recruit absolutely no one besides the three starting companions? At least, I can't see it happening otherwise.
Though... I do know how you can have 3 of the companions go away.
1. Leave Blackwall to rot in the prison cell after he reveals his secret
2. Tell Sera that she doesn't fit the Inquisition. You can say this whenever.
3. Tell Dorian to leave. I don't know if you can tell him this whenever but certainly during one of his first conversations in Skyhold.

Except that Cassandra might well not be available in post-game play either as she's one of the three candidates for Divine. Unless you're trying to see if it's possible to get to the final fight with just 'that one companion who supposedly never leaves?'

Let's see...
Don't recruit Bull.
Leave Blackwall in Prison after he reveals the truth
Choose Hawke to die in the Fade and have a low approval rating with Varric
Tell Dorian to Leave shortly after he joins at Skyhold.
Tell Sera to leave or don't recruit her.
Don't allow Cole to join or ask him to leave.
Set up Viv as the Divine. (Viv is the only Divine that leaves at the end of the game)
Solas leaves anyway
This leaves you with only Cassandra.

I'm doing my evil playthrough and struggling to do the same thing. If you get Dorian's approval down low enough (he really hates it when you meet him in Redcliffe and then leave to recruit the Templars anyway), they'll be a scene where you can punch him in the face and tell him to leave. It's really intense and awesome. I punched Solas too but he's still with me but hates my guts.
Cassandra, Vivienne and Iron Bull love me. Sera surprisingly does too even though I've been doing EVERYTHING in my power to get rid of her (does she ever leave? haven't done her personal quest yet). I rejected Cole from joining up. Blackwall loathes me and will likely leave when I allow Celene to die.
I didn't want to kill off my evil pro-templar Hawke so Varric is actually ok with me despite being a colossal douchebag. Does he really leave if Hawke dies? Is it possible to go through the game without a rogue? I wish all the low disapproval/'crisis' scenes where online because they are actually really well done from what i've seen.

I've gotta know too, that's my next playthrough.
Although right now it seems like only Viv likes my mage.
Solas told me something about "if I cared about what you thought....but I don't." ![]()
Got a chewing out by Blackwall. ![]()
Iron Bull wont talk to me ![]()
And even Varric has clammed up. ![]()

I'm a tad disappointed that I finished my first playthrough with everyone there (well, Solas and Vivienne left afterwards, but post-game only kinda counts).
In my first DAO run, I was terrible about building a party. I didn't cure Dog, I killed Zevran instead of waking him, I killed Wynne just outside the Harrowing chamber, and I told Sten to leave after he attacked me in Haven. I never got Shale because I hadn't downloaded the DLC yet. In the end, I only had Morrigan, Leliana, Alistair, and Oghren left.
In my first DA2 run, Carver died in the Deep Roads, Isabella didn't return at the Arishok confrontation, and Fenris fought against me for siding with the mages. I only had Merrill, Aveline, and Varric left.
It just feels odd to have everyone there. It seems kinda like it's inverted. Blackwall's departure requires actively pursuing his personal quest. I never got that far with him, so I still don't know all the details of it, and I'm trying to avoid them to keep my second run from getting completely spoiled.
Anyways, good luck with the run.

Note: not recruiting them at all does not count for them leaving. I will recruit all, then try to make them leave due to my actions and such.

Can you eventually punch Sera? Only kept her around the first time after that I just ask her to leave strait away since I can't seem to kill her.
