I finished my first playthrough, and as I sit, about to get into my second playthrough, I realize I have crafting burn out, and I really don't want to have to run around collecting crafting materials. So I ask: can this game be played with just the gear you pick up, or buy?? Suggestions welcome.
Has anyone played this without crafting anything?

Haven't done it, but I bet it easily can. Whenever I craft stuff I usually find better gear a couple of levels later anyway. ![]()

I was trying to out of part laziness and part I didn't want to waste mats just to need them again on higher tier schemtics later on but it felt needlessly difficult. If I had a better idea of which shops sold the good items though, I bet it wouldn't be so bad. I had it all scooped out in DAO/DAA/DA2 and knew where to go to get what but since everyone crafts in this game, no real news is out on the interwebs on where good in game armor and weapons are that I have seen. What I wouldn't give for a Rose's Thorn on my DW Rogue!

Depends on your difficulty, I suppose. But I'm actually not finding myself getting tired of it. Most of the mats are right on my path anyway.

I have. 2 full playthroughs and 1 semi playthrough. DW Rogue Assassin, 2h Reaver, Rift Mage. All did fine.
Before Tier 3 stuff crafting is unnecessary.
Tier 3 stuff is broken.
Hence I stopped crafting.
I also stopped crafting potions as well. I don't need anything but the default one.

You lose out on crit though. Crafting can yield ridiculous crit chance that essential for couple of builds (artificer, rift mage, 2 hander)

I think in my second playthrough I will not craft anything, unless I get really unlucky with drops and feel my characters are falling a lot behind. I think Bioware has done a great job with loot, there are many quests and many interesting loot there. Bosses drop always noce loot, etc. We could have a perfect game without crafting.
I feel crafting is just an extra, which makes the game much more easy.
In the early levels I did not have schematics, and what I could do was not very good. With tier 2, everything you craft is better by a little, so it is good to craft to keep everybody well suited. However you reach fast a point of brokenness, having a tank that does not ever die is very easy.
And tier 3 just makes the game trivial, I am level 15, I have crafted a little only and I am finding already that crafting is too good lategame.
So yeah, my second playthrough will be without crafting, mostly.

I have found that playing on Nightmare mode without using the "Tac Cam" and just fighting without pausing.. you need crafted gear. Most of the "junk" I find is just that.. junk.
I imagine that on normal tho, found gear is fine.. but personally I would rather spend 10-15 minutes crafting "great" gear for my party then vendor trashing everything I find.. then spend 10-15 minutes every hour or so playing "item tetris" to figure out which of the found items are better then what I currently have..
I can't imagine playing without the crafting..

Found gear is fine. It will make the game harder, but since Nightmare is soloable, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It's part luck, I would say don't go out of your way to NOT craft, just don't obsess over it.

I think the crafting beyond tier 1 breaks the difficulty curve of the game, because passive stat boosts (armor, resistances, +attack and such) are very potent. Haven`t tried a playthrough in nightmare using world loot only, but that might be only way to get some real challenge in the game.

Before Tier 3 stuff crafting is unnecessary.
Actually, I've played with a crafted pair of daggers from ~6 to 11 lv, and I never seen anything better in drop. I think that early crafting is useful too.
Playing without crafting? Must be doable, but crafted items and mods are superior anyway, and one does not even need to grind mats - they are all around you and 100% free (+gathering missions). It also gives one some room for visual customization.

Did I need those super cool items. Likely not I could have finished with the blue and purple stuff but the gap between those items and the craftable isn't small, it is a chasm.

That is true. Between 6-9/10 there is a lack of decent weapons. My Archer used a level 4 bow untill level 8, at which he got the purple bow in Storm Coast, which is eqvuivalent to a Tier 2 weapon. A little later I got a Blue Bow at 106 damage. That was enough to clear out until Haven at least!
However, it's not an issue. Crafting is, by design, always better than drops. Which is why we try to play without it; It really does trivialize the game. Just like Focus abilities does.

I barely crafted anything, only a couple of Staves for my lame mage, a bow for Sera, and Bianca components for Varric (pretty much mandatory). Honestly every single time I crafted something means I would get a unique drop of the same item type within an hour. Eventually late in the game my crafted staff and bow were finally better than anything I was finding.
Biggest problem I had as a mage was finding good cloth and leather. I was swimming tier 1/2 stuff but never seemed to have enough of the good mats to make armor. I also never found recipes that were worthwhile for mage armor. I think the best I had was the fancy outfit (the one you wear to the Winter Palace). I didn't use any guides and tried to do an honest playthrough for my first run so I suppose once I start cheating I'll know where to look for the good stuff at.
tl;dr - crafting is completely unnecessary and the game gives you plenty of great items.

I craft stuff as much as possible and find myself hoarding mat'ls as a result. In the end I often find drops that are better than what I have but its easy to be deceived. There are alot of new rules to this game and I haven't completely sorted it. Nonetheless all of my NPC are running around with crafted armor, some weapons, but a lot of grips, pommels, occasional rune, etc.

Lame indeed. I'm playing as a mage, and I'm starting to give priority to looking for anything that will give me more mana. Currently I can't do any combos because opening with upgraded Walking Bomb uses too much mana and I can't cast anything else except a low-mana spell like immolate. :/

Then you craft gear that gives you massive amounts of willpower.
Cause that's what crafting in this game, people: attribute management.

Willpower does not increase mana.
Willpower increase damage(Equal amount as Magic) and magic defense.

It does? Oh well.
Then you craft something that reduces the amount of mana used. Fade touched something.
