Dude if they wanted it to be super realistic everyone would be dead arround the age of 30.

not true.

While it is true that the average life expectince in the middle ages was 30. That number is kind of wrong. why? AVERAGES. When doing averages, if you have a lot of outliers it will effect the number. men and women in the middle ages could expect to live to live much longer then that, 70s is not surprising.  Generally one was not considered old till they reached their 50s.

The problem is that life after birth during this time period was highly dangerous, many died. Assuming you could live past that you could live to your 70s. Of course you can't die to disease or war but that kills people in the modern era too.

as this is also a hygine thread. Here is another misconception: medieval people never bathing. This is false, as we have numerous documents about the people of the time period bathing either in public baths or in homes/castles. But they did bathe, rather extensivly as we have documents to back it up.

Though it did decline at the end of the era, due to the black death. And the fact that bath-houses had a tendency to double as brothels.

Wait, really? Ha!

Now I wonder if Cass wears perfume. I think she might, but a very subtle scent. Leliana would wear something flowery and Orlesian while Josie's would be simple and elegant.

Dorian and Viv are so much fun to have in a party with Solas. All three of them keep trying to out-sass each other.

Dorian: Ah, Solas! You startled me. You’re always so… nondescript.
Solas: Please speak up! I cannot hear you over your outfit!

Actual banter.

Never gets old.

Heh, got there before I could. I've seen that "most people died in their 30s" thing so often. But averages aren't very representative of what a person's actual life would look like, especially in a time with very high infant mortality.

HAH.

i was wateing for some one to think i didnt actualy know my history regarding this misconseption... btw i do.

but it was ment more in jest as apposed to being an actual historical point.

that being said Soap had been arround since a least the celtics and whith less sugar and starch tooth decay woulnt be to bad a problem.

and there was mention of a bubonic plague in Val royux so im assuming that sanitation has begun to be empproved in we are assumeing that events mirror ours.

The other thing to remember about Blackwall is that he's the freakin' tank. I doubt anyone smells like roses or has tidy hair after a few hours of hand-to-hand combat in full armour - more like exertion and dead bandits/bears/demons. Meanwhile, Dorian is standing at the back setting everyone on fire, much less likely to get covered in dragon parts. (Although you'd think all that staff-twirling would also work up a sweat ...)

Dorian, Vivienne, and someone else mentioned it, so it has to have some truth in it. :P

You try roaming around in that damn padded underarmour coat of his and try smelling of flowers after battle!!

One thing, you wouldn't notice the smell next to some of those mounts in the stable.  Bog unicorn's poop has got to reek.

If there's one thing I would never accuse mage (or ranged) companions in this game of, it's standing back and staying out of melee range.

Instead of Pope soap on a rope, Dragon age characters need Divine pine on some twine.

You know who probably stinks the most, though? Sera.

Cole looks like he probably smells, but he's a spirit. Do spirits smell?

It looks like Blackwall and Iron Bull have some personal hygiene issues, both which are brought up by Dorian. At least that probably means that Dorian is super clean which my future inquisitor will surely appreciate.

He HAS possessed a corpse that was only dead moments before he took it over. Is the body decaying or is it in a normal state because he took it over before the guy actually died. And if they did smell, I'd imagine it would smell like fade.

Oh he's quite dirty, actually...

No, Cole isn't possessing anything. He exists in a physical state. That's what's so unique about him.

And I have a feeling the Fade smells like whatever you want it to smell like. Actually, that gives me a thought. What if Cole smells like something that makes you feel better? He's a spirit of compassion, after all. So to Josie he smells like the seaside, to Varric he smells like the Hanged Man and Bianca's perfume, etc.

Ahh my bad, I thought when he said he was helping that mage (mage? templar?) in the prisons that he possessed that guy in his/her final seconds. Meh bad!

And I like that example, that kinda fits with him in a sense. Although if that were the case, then he wouldn't need to burn the turnips in the fireplace to remind the man of home, but still! I like the idea!

Hmmm, true. He probably doesn't smell like anything, then. Either that or he smells really clean. If he smelled bad he'd be able to tell from the thoughts of people around him, and he'd try to fix it.

I'd say most characters who are not nobility mages not used to field conditions have some personal hygiene issues that most here would find horrifying. It's a sad fact that most campaigns up untill... well the prior century really, ended due to sickness and disease rather than military action, and judging from that surgeon thats about the level of compentence we're talking about.

Sera? Street girl. Do not expect cleanliness

The bull: mercenary. Travels a lot in poor condition so suspectible to diseases as well as having a tendency to spread them .

Cassandra. Same, military means you can typically go unwashed for weeks. Expect few to no changes of clothes as well. Enjoying a bath does not mean you get many opportunities to have one.

Cole. Might not know what washing is

Blackwall, spends most of his time away from civilization  were washing is impractical and frankly, not needed much. Also military man.

Solas. Bloody hippy. So no washing. Elven gods probably do not need to either.

Three most clean people are probably Varric, Vivienne and Dorian as they are A: not military, B: Usually in situations and enviroments were they are actually able to clean themselves and C: Highly reliant on their social graces in everyday life.

Not if you're a mage who can destroy the entire village with an outburst. :)

THIS IS WHY WE CIRCLE THE MAGES.

Cole likely doesn't smell like anything since the only reason he looks ragged in the first place is because he doesn't understand why it would be appealing to look/be dressed cleanly over looking like a hobo. Also many characters notw things that are wrong with him such as his odd speaking tones and body language, but never odor. I'm guessing he doesn't smell like anything since he's not completely human and banter with Dorian implies he bleeds only because he thinks he has to. Clearly he can telport to some degree so his body is malleable to an extent.
