Which Chests You Should Really Buy in Multiplayer Theory

I was thinking about the chest system in the multiplayer and realized something (minus one small possible caveat).

Before I start, the caveat: The ONLY THING that I'm still unsure about is this: Do you have a better chance of a rare or unique item drop from a large chest? If so, disregard the rest of this post. If not(edit), please read on.

If you buy 1 large chest, you get 5 random items, and 5 random potions. This costs you a total of 1200.

If you buy 5 small chests, you get 5 random items, and 10 random potions. This costs you a total of 1350.

This means that, for just 150 more gold, you get the same number of items, but twice the number of potions!

"But, why would I do this when I could just get 5 random potions from a box and save my money up for a large chest?" You ask, with some confidence.

Well, because that would cost you more! If you buy only the large chests, you're more likely to run out of health potions. This would naturally lead you to needing to buy a potion chest (this HAS happened to me multiple times so I don't think it's that unlikely). A potion chest costs you 250 gold, which would mean that, overall, you're spending an unnecessary 100 gold. Since I've started buying small chests, I haven't ran out of potions, and it's been a while. You also get more grenades and other kinds of potions, which can seriously come in handy.

Please correct me if I'm wrong somehow.

I did some math a few weeks ago regarding when to buy each chest, but I noticed that some people didn't interpret it correctly so here's just a quick guideline on when to buy what chest.

  • Buy Medium or Large Chests when you want items and don't care about potions at all. Large Chests only save you 1.66g per item, so it's like paying 5g on one-game shipping for a medium.

  • When you run out of healing potions or just want potions in general, don't buy potion chests. If you buy 5 small chests, you get the same loot as 1 Large Chest and 1 Potion Chest for 100g less. You don't have to buy 5, this is just an example.

That is all. No more math. If you want a source, eh **** it I'm not doing it again. I'm a Masters in Operations Research so this **** is what we do, no reason to get fancy about it. Last time I put up all the details, some people didn't understand that small chests were not the best purchases. Their thought process was equivalent to, "Instead of buying that soda with 1 straw for $1, I can buy a soda that comes with 10 straws for $1.05!" even though if you just continued to buy sodas for the rest of your life, you'll always get just enough straws to drink them with.

Thanks for doing the math. I was just beginning to question my chest buying strategies, now that I am starting to get into the game.

ismsAUGT, we don't know the odds for different items, quality of items, or levels of items in the three different chests. In ME3MP, there was a large variety of chests, different sizes of chests and specialized chests, each one with different items and higher and lower odds for different items. In order to figure out exactly which chest is best bang for buck in terms of getting high level uniques/rare, we either need the information from bioware or do a lot of chest opening. Until we have this information, the best we can do is to assume large chests are best or at least equal to the other two chests when it comes to phat loot.

The only problem I see with your method is that you're running out of health potions?!?!?!

For comparison, I play mostly Perilous and I don't see how I could spend my 100+ health potions anytime soon, even if I wasn't buying any chest for the next 2 weeks. Honestly, when you'll have sinked in more than 40 hours in MP, you should never run out of potions ever again. If you do, either your party is pretty bad or you are.

With that said, you should only buy Large chests or occasional medium ones. Anything else is a waste of time and gold...

Well, that is pretty obvious. Double so on perilous, where you can use up 2 potions, and most likely will get more (about 1440 gold per run).

I added potions to the spreadsheet for the sake of completeness and total price/value, but I agree that those mostly don't matter.

Actually any methods, counting, whatever... Makes no sense:

Buy only large chestes. That's all. I was just bored at work :P

Thanks everyone!

I'm a qualitative social scientist, not quantitative, so I have next to no experience with math since calculus, and so I knew that somewhere either my math or logic would falter.

Health potions (almost) become obsolete once you get some heal on kill rings.  Especially when you get high amounts, like 15% or 20%.
