Aside from gameplay suggestions, I would advise for maximum enjoyment of this game; remember these three words:

Leave. The. Hinterlands.

It'll make sense once you're into it, but you'll thank me later, trust me.

You can change your skills easily, if you feel that they aren't working.

My real tips for a beginner would be, as the above person said, "leave the Hinterlands", which is a beginning area full of optional quests that you can come back to later. I'd suggest following the main quest intently at least until you get to a place called Skyhold (in the game it'll be obvious when you've reached that point) before tackling more optional stuff, because a LOT of things open up with Skyhold.

Edit: And take a good look at your character under different lights as you go through the introduction/prologue of the game. I disliked the way my character looked after creation but decided to just keep going, which was a big mistake; it's far better to start over after 30 minutes and go back to make a better face than to finish the game with an ugly one (or worse, remake your character after putting in a bunch of hours of play).

Contrary to popular belief, The Hinterlands isn't as bad as people make it out to be. You can explore it quite a bit before running into enemies that will crush you because they out level you by 3-5 levels. I enjoyed the Hinterlands quite a bit. I do, however agree that after a few quests you should leave and come back later.
