It's like, here I am, a proud Dalish elf, surrounded by ignorant shemlin, and I can't tell them how filthy they are to their faces? It's disgusting.

An example: I take the Knight-Enchanter specialization. I feel like I'm continuing the traditions of my people, y'know. Anyway, I go talk to Vivienne (first mistake) and she's all "Oh now you can go protect the Chantry with your Chantry-approved fighting style." And I'm like, hello? Arcane Warrior was here first you vermin shem. But I can't tell her that and I just have to sit there and nod like a good little knife-ear.

I don't expect BioWare to care about the plight of the Dalish, but this goes too far

Knight Enchanter is not Arcane Warrior. And the Dalish elves know nothing about the Arcane Warrior spec. It was lost to time until the Warden uncovered it buried in a temple overrun by werewolves.

I "was" gonna say: probably the same reason you can't tell Dorian, Sera and Krem that you don't agree with their lifestyle choices.....thinking it was one of those threads about race hate....guess I should read the OP before forming an opinion response.

But on topic.

I agree that a Pro-Dalish should be able to show hatred for non-dalish. However you wouldn't be able to be leader of the Inquisition...since you kinda have to work with the Shems to save the world.

Origins was much better at letting you play an evil role, so long as you killed the arch demon everything else was acceptable.

I think Clan Lavellan is supposed to be friendly to  humans, so maybe the writers thought it would be out of character for the apprentice of the keeper of a pro-human Dalish clan to be anti-human?

I have yet to see a moral choice game where the choices aren't between saint and douchebag.

This. Saying Knight-Enchanter techniques are Arcane Warrior techniques is like saying modern ketchup is ancient Roman garum. Sure, they have similarities, they're used the same way and with about the same frequency, and there's an unbroken line of sauces between them, but the Knights-Enchanter have picked up some new things and put their own spin on it in the last two thousand years.

More generally, it's probably because writing and recording new lines for every time you're talking to a human that only a fraction of a fraction of players would ever get wasn't considered worth it.

Are they though? I haven't made it past the prologue on Elf yet, but from what I read about some war-table missions for them don't they go to war with humans and end up ruling a human city?

I don't think the extra races should have been in the first place. It was originally a human only game, and should have stayed that way. I don't think the entire context lends itself to it, like the Warden did. This isn't quite the personalized/specific story that Hawke is, but it's more like that than DAO.

imho, of course.

What are you smoking?  Are you seriously asking for less customization and choice in an RPG game?  Go home.

Dear Bioware...

Why can't I eradicate the verminous plague known as Dalish Elves from Thedas?  They crop up everywhere, even in the most desolate Maker-Forsaken regions where mankind rightfully put their ancestors to the sword and fire!  They wear slave markings, celebrating their people's history under a bloody and cruel slaver-empire, brainwash any and all elves they come across into conforming with their vision of Elven superiority, and they freely claim territory around their nomadic landships as their own, slaughtering any and all farmers and innocents tending fields or gathering food, while hiding and attacking behind cowardly ambushes they stake out in these peoples' homeland.  The Dalish truly do deserve to die.

Please Bioware, make this happen!

You cannot be openly racist because you are a leader of a multi-species organization.

Additionally, given the information and revelations that you obtain as you progress through the game as a Dalish Elf, I fail to see why any sensible Dalish Elf would still cling to their self-righteousness, racist attitudes and their " elven culture".

In this game...

  1. The Dalish with their Vallaslin are revealed to be nothing more than slaves, no different from Casteless in Orzammar with their Brand.
  2. They are even looked down and labelled as Shemlen by the Ancient Elves which they were supposed to revere. Abelas called the Dalish Elves "Shadows wearing Vallaslin...Shemlens...Not my people..."
  3. Their "gods" have either abandoned them or stopped giving much of a damn about them or are asleep in another dimension or are not sympathetic to them as Dalish. Mythal did not care for them. Fen'Harel is not exactly pro-Dalish, he is just trying to fix his own mistakes and he has unique viewpoints.

A Dalish Elf Inquisitor would not be pro-Dalish anymore after going through the main quest storyline. They might be pro-Elf but I find it difficult that they would be pro-Dalish or remain one.

In fact, one of the biggest keypoints and takeaway from this game is this

The Dalish are fundamentally wrong about their elven culture and elven history. There was, there is and there will never be an Elven utopia. Utopias do not exist. Instead, the Dalish should seek to evolve and improve in their own way and on their own terms as opposed to revering their false past and their slavemaster "gods". They should try to understand their past but they should not go and live it.

This is something that historians will come to understand:- That one should understand the past. Not to live in that past and not to glorify the past but to not repeat the mistakes committed in the past.

The Dalish should do the same.

As such, I am of the opinion that Dalish Elves must discard their Dalish-ness and go their own way.

F**k their ancient traditions. F**k their gods. F**k this flat-ear or shemlen bullshite. F**k tribal nomadic lifestyle. They should do things on their own terms now.

All Elves should all unite and pursue a new path towards obtaining a nation from the humans through diplomacy and politics. They should strive to be cooperative with Humans, Dwarves and Qunaris instead of just blindly being racist towards them. They should be pro-Elven but not at the cost of drawing the ire of other races.

Cheers.  B)

It does seem odd that we're not given the choice to be racist or at least contrary and confrontational. In Origins you had quite a few opportunities to say things like "your welcome means nothing to me Human lord" or when a chantry sister tries to give you a blessing "and do you destroy the homeland of anyone who refuses?" stuff like that. We also don't have any option to be evil which was always a thing in previous games.

The Nobles are corrupted with Red Lyrium, the Lavellan clan assists the common folk along with Inquisition assistance to root them out and uncover the Venatori infiltrator.

Nobles being nobles see the Elves as an Invading force rather than a peace keeping force and attempt to march on the city and wipe them out but are brought to a halt by the Inquisition banners.

The people of the city elect for the Lavellan to join the council and joint rule over the city, fostering stronger Human/Elf relations for the better.

I am home.

I don't smoke. Not indoors or otherwise :D

I like choice and customization, but when the premise is specific, it sets the parameters. Then I'm open to hearing a specific kind of story.

That all said, I'm merely saying there's little point in shoehorning things that don't really fit. But if you want something more open ended, then change the premise itself. A game focused on human politics, human civil wars, human religion, and a herald of Andraste doesn't need all of these options. It just looks absurd.

You can, actually, tell Sera off for not revering the Elven gods. There's tons of ways to ****** her off by being "too elfy" (remember how she greets you when she first meets you? with disgust "aaand, you're an elf") if you're a traditionalist, which is how I chose to play my Elfquisitor.
