I've come to point where i want to make second, companion rogue versatile without swapping them, using one armor set and both daggers and bow and swap them to fit the encounter for compannion rogue.

So checking viability of such rogue companion setup and its difference/weaknesses and pros versus weapon specific builds is very interesting topic for me and i invite people to discuss and check that with me.

The point is to fit the encounter, reduce micromanagement where needed, and increase damage if needed.

So there comes idea to build one, non Archery or DW specific companion which will feature main stuff from his Specialization tree + stuff from Subtrefuge and Sabotage.

How effective one could be and in what conditions.

there are 3 rogue compannions.

Cole, Assasin

Sera, Tempest

Varric, Artificer

Cole.

Assasin

Well assasin tree is thing that can work just by  its own, and seems we have most independance from weapon specific points.

We take all tree.

Subtrefuge

It is also great tree , which is useful even for archers, it have Mercy Killing, Evade, and useful CC which even can be used as ranged character to CC/peel off characters from you, it is also another detonator and decrease your cd, which is good! Full tree here!

Sabotage

Right tree, passives mainly, Knifes to at low priority

Sera

Full trees for Subtrefuge and Tempest.

Sabotage : PW with upgrade and duration passive + Cheap shot at lower priority.

Longshot. (she need to spam something if  she sniping, something that could be detonator)

Varric

Full trees for Subtrefuge and Artificer

Sabotage : PW with upgrade and duration passive + Cheap shot at lower priority.

Longshot

Party

should be build around CC and Combo/Detonation. Must have Spirit Mage (any), Probably another DW rogue, and Templar.

All 3 are viable as weapon swappers. They provide alot of CC, evasion, mercy killing which synergizes, and full spec powers which are their main power.

Yes , they do less damage than dedicated sniper or DW, but need much less micromanaging and if micromanaged (and even if not - but to lesser extent) are cover the field with CC / effect / effect detonators.

From all those Varric have least synergy, because without proper archery heavy skills he will lack skills for his passives. Traps are not quite powerful thing for such setup either.

Sera is good. And Cole with full assasin tree can skip weapon specific ones.

So : If needed, Cole and Sera could perform well as jack of all trades characters who focus mainly on their Spec Abilities and mobility / CC. Varric have less synergy with such kind of gameplay because Arty tree does not features really powerful Damaging abilities, but passives which need some heavy actives working near them.

Your thoughts?

Hmm, I feel dumb. I never thought of changing Cole to an archer, lol. I bet that would make him mvp of the rogues hands down. Duel Weild is strong, no doubt, but it can't shine on it's own without player control and if I want to take direct control of a character for most of the battle, I'd just play MY DUEL WEILD rogue, not Cole.

My mp archer can put out some pretty nasty damage with long shot and mark of death with a few other assassin skills that it gets, so I'd imagine on Cole in the sp with his full assassin tree, some subterfuge and some archery would just be nasty. Maybe not full assassin tree, idk, I'd have to relook at it to see. Would hidden blades do anything at a distance? I don't have a lot of experience with that skill outside of it being a passive on both of my tempest duel weilders daggers, lol. I don't let Varric use the jelly bean grenade or hotpie trap for the specific reason that he gets too close and isn't smart enough to move back away again afterwards on his own.

HB work at range , they simply deal lower damage if you are with bow. But all assassin tree is good. Cc and mercy killing important. And yes, only long shot, there is melee skill in subterfuge which not requiring wielding daggers. It is awesome peel tool which is also cc and decrease of your precious assassin CDs for 4 secs. Give Cole master craft +attack bow, full subterfuge and assassin trees as base, set stealth and evade to priority, protect - Cole. He will use SS to peel guys from him., you can skip evade upgrade tho, and taking cheap shot is important .

I find Sera the best hands down. She needs very few points into Archery, since the bulk of her damage are the spikes during Flask of Lightning auto attack and Flask of Fire ability-spam.
Even Tempest doesn't require many point, just both Flasks are sufficient.
There is a lot of room to invest in other trees with her, so much so that I got most of Sabotage and more than half of Subterfuge tree by level 19.
Not to mention that when given the Longbow of the Griffon, she is the best Dragon killer bar none.
