Was curious... do you guys play with the AI ON or OFF? Do you let them do their own thing or do you issue every single order yourselves?

For me AI on but with a few key spells disabled so I can be sure they're there to use when needed for combos.

I used to disable AI completely, but it got slightly annoying to have to press Y anytime I killed an enemy, so now I have them with AI on, with all talents disabled and potions set to ALL.

Same thing here. Gona save the ''micromanage every move'' for my second playtrough ( nightmare + friendly fire on ).

But i got one question. Even though i leave my mage on " Mana reserve 100" he still starts the fight with a spell ( barrier or some offensive spell )... Any way around that? I just want him to use ordinary attack when i am not controlling him...

I'm into the micromanagement of combat in Tactical view...I tried it with AI on for some characters but was not happy with the results except for Cassandra (I would just have her "defend" my mage and let her do her thing).  Now I'm trying it with AI off and so far I think I prefer it.

I do wish you could set up more tactical options (like have companion mage always cast barrier on Cass) but I found that he would frequently slap a barrier on Varric who was up on a hill sniping and not really the target of anyone.

There are certainly problems with tactical (maybe fixed by Patch 2?) but overall it gives me the best chance to get through all the weaker battles without having to use potions...plus it allows me to role-play a bit more with characters sort of "sticking together" and supporting one another as I see fit, not some random algorithm.

Mana reserve doesn't mean that the character will reserve that amount of mana/stamina in the sense that skills costs will be taken in consideration as to not go lower that amount. It means that under that amount skills will not be used. In your case, since you set it at 100%, the first skill will always be used since the 100% mana/stamina reserve condition is met (i.e. the character is not below 100% stamina and so s/he can use a skill).

In little words "mana/stamina reserve" means: character will use a skill only if mana/stamina is equal or above the indicated value.

Playing with AI on. Cass and Viv do it okay-iss (don't understand why they don't act on frozen/stunned targets and just look at the Inquisitor 90% of the time), but Varric is a loose cannon with a deathwish. Playing on Hard with a Riftmage and never using the taccam.

I prefer active mode, and aside from that, can't stand the tac cam in this game, so always ON.

I do micro-manage, and I use the Tac Cam almost exclusively, but I also leave the AI on.

I like them to be able to select a new target themselves when their current target dies. I wish they'd all do that (rather than just the unselected characters).

Not tried with AI off yet, mainly because I find the tac cam so unwieldly ........make it so you keep your actual view of the battlefield as you have it set up in normal mode, the controls to move the view in tac are bloody awful . So,much as I'd prefer to play tactically as I know I could do so much better myself, the interface makes me want to scoop my eyes out with a melonballer!!

On! I currently only play on hard which is easy enough to let me get away with sub-par tactics. I enjoy not having to pause the game every time a spell is cast to give a new action, and the AI's tanking ability is not too shabby in my opinion :)

Yeah, so after tinkering around with a couple different options I'm finding that I do want the AI on for some characters (like my tank Cass) but off for just about everyone else...I think the best middle ground for me is turning AI on (I can always override if I don't like who a companion is targeting or Varric starts to approach a bear or something) but I turn off all the special abilities except for Cass.  I still do all combat from the Tac Cam - which I find to be just fine except when battles take place on multiple elevations (sometimes I'll have a ranged guy on a hill but have a hell of a time getting the cross hairs to navigate down the cliff face to target an opponent below.

To be honest, I'm not familar enough yet with when to use the different warrior buffs and abilities (War Cry, challenge, shield wall, etc) to use them as quickly as the AI does, so basically with Cass I just give her a target (or tell her to defend my mage) and let the AI control her..I sometimes make her shield bash to combo off a frozen opponent, but otherwise she's on her own.  But for all my other characters I have their AI on but all active abilities off so that I can set up combos, use spells/abilities on the opponents I choose, and have defensive abilities charged up and ready to use when I want to use them.

I was mostly frustrated with spell casters setting up barriers on non-melee engaged companions even after I've killed all ranged opponents.

On - it's a console game with console controls so I play it like a console game and it works just fine on nightmare, dragons I kill solo, The ai in dragon fights is just terrible and I don't want to use the terrible tac cam for it every 2 seconds. This game should take a look at dragons dogma, this game has much better dragon fights and a deeper and smarter AI.

On, with several abilities off so they do not waste them, like glyphs, dispel, etc.

I let the mage use barrier as much as he wants, I have seen that I am not in need of potions as much as I expected, so even if they waste the spell from time to time, I prefer it to having to micromanage it, which I would find super boring.

I only micromanage difficult battles.
