The only real thing I would have changed about rifts, is adding more enemy variety, and changed up the static 2 wave thing. Maybe throw in the occasional dynamic quest in there, especially saving people.
Closing a rift is lame.

Have fun killing the same monsters over and over again and closing 10million boring rifts. I remember in DA:O when facing down Pride demons was fun, not a grind.
lol are you serious? i remember i did a lot of grinding in dao. DAO had a far less enemy's types in comparison to inquisition. lol i don't think the game had more than 5-6 types of darkspawn.

Exactly. "Rifts" are no different than random enemy spawns.

Summoning the creature or doing Hulk Smash is also something that will be done... you guessed it, holding down a button. How about an Final Fantasy summons where you call a creature to seal the rift? How about you transform into the Hulk, and Hulk Smash the rift?
Instead you hold a button.

Now if my companions could manage to stay out of the stream as I'm sealing it, that'd be awesome.

I get a feeling of accomplishment when sealing a rift. Maybe I'm just easy to please. I would absolutely HATE having to go into the fade to close the rift like Oblivion. Just no. Sealing the rift is cool enough for me.

Ditto, to all of this!

If I had any change to suggest for an unlimited budget, I would have liked if you could do more. Like choose to harness the rifts. Stabilize them in a way that doesn't let things go through but the Inquisition can use them as a power source.
Naturally this would be painted as dangerous. And it could lead to events with demons still attacking people.

And why don't you grow up instead of insulting people. I find closing a rift to be satisfying because of the sound design.

I especially like the ability to disrupt, really.

Here you go, sir. In a few sentences you outshone the gameplay concept Bioware had worked on for a few years.

I think I can get behind the OP with regard to the mechanic for a sword and board warrior. I have only played most of the way through as a DW rogue and the mechanic for disrupting the rift is perfect for me. I charge in, shadow strike someone, maybe twin fang them too or another...and then stealth and let the remainder of the group soak up the demons. At that point I disrupt the rift, if needed. I'm not sure I understand how a non-stealth character would handle this.
Some mechanism to pull all demons to yourself, taunt, etc. right under the rift that then becomes a disruption would be cool for warrior types.
Closing the rift itself is a non-issue as that is an after action. A different disruption mechanism for non-stealth, primary tank warrior types would be pretty cool.

I think Bioware didn't consider closing rifts to be an important gameplay mechanic. I assume they looked at it like a mini-quest. Plot-wise, it is major, though. Your whole purpose as The Herald is to seal the rifts.
A rift is a semi-random battle encounter where you flip a switch at the end. But, you are flipping the switch during battle and the camera is pointed at the switch while enemies are attacking you.
Opposite of fun.

True, but it could have been so much more.

What they could have changed about the rifts is make them fewer ,larger, important and more epic. One rift per region.Dominating the sky, spitting out pride demons(and mook demons). Each closing would end in a crescendo, cutscene and fade to white. Quizzy wakes up in camp after a dream of the conclave.

Well, you don't have to hold the button down. You can just tap it to close the rift. PROBLEM FIXED ![]()

My point wasn't to reinvent the game. If you were developing a game mechanic, the cheapest thing to do is make a switch. It's a last-ditch cop-out for a developer.
It's like a single-button QTE. It's really bad. I would be embarrassed as a developer.
Why can't The Herald shoot the orb?

You get a feeling of accomplishment when sealing a rift? Why dont you just play Candycrush or something equally dopamine-enducing FFS. Running around sealing these rifts is soooooo dumb.
Different strokes man. No need to be mean.

Please do not insult other forum members by denigrating their skill or anything like that if they happen to enjoy a game mechanic that you do not.

What I would have liked is for a rift to regenerate if you dont close it. I stood around one that was ready to be closed after I killed all the demons (didnt walk out of range) and all it did was create those patches that put out those crystals around where I was.

So we should enter the oblivion gate... I mean rift and close it from within by destroying the source from within?
Oh god, no. That was the worst. Fun once. Tedious forever more.

Then you could honestly say closing each of them would be uphill battle to the death and an accomplishment.

I love the sound. I still try to disrupt a rift even if most of the demons are already cleared just so I can do it twice in a row.
