My character is a shield warrior and I'm been mainly sticking with the Shield and Vanguard tree making it so I get more armor with taunt and getting Shield Bash. However it seems like it's I'm very squishy I'm playing on Nightmare and enemies just rip through my armor.
Also I'm trying to do all the side quests in the Hinderlands but all the enemies are level 12 now...is that a sign on maybe I should move onto story missions?
How to be a less squishy Tank?

If enemies over level you, yeah it's time to move on to story and/or some other zones for a bit. Until much later, still keep an eye out for flanking enemies, Bear Mauls the Wolves helps to mitigate flanking issues, but it's still best to keep things in front of you.
I moved Shield Wall to a key I can quickly tap in order to block things (you can even use this to quickly block a Dragon's breath attack), with good timing you can quickly build guard and stagger enemies, opening them up to more damage, just don't rely on holding shield wall all the time, simply use it for quick timed blocks, and then keep swinging to regen stamina. Sometimes you have to just sit and take the brunt of attacks, like when fighting Giants and Bears, and then you will need to alternate swinging with blocking to stay up, with the vanguard 15% bleed talent you can still hold aggro through constant shield wall blocks and auto-attacks.
Keep Payback Strike off cooldown until you get knocked down, stunned, or lit on fire, it will clear any of those effects and do massive damage. I.E.: Terror demon pops up and knocks you on your ass, payback strike will instantly make you stand up and knock them on their ass. "Payback's a bi---."
In general, use Payback Strike and Shield Bash to keep enemies knocked down, that will help everyone stay alive longer.
Later on, when/if you go Champion, Walking Fortress and To the Death (both maxed) will take care of maintaining guard, then things are cake.

Whoa dude thank you so much , too be honest I didn't give Shield Wall much credit I thought eeeeh it's not that good. After trying it out again it's amazing
I really needed a good power house once I got Iron Bull Tanking wasn't as bad anymore. Enemie paid attention to me while my buddies aka Iron Bull just man handled them.

Yes, time to move on and make use of Shield Wall, the most OP defensive ability in the game.
GhoXen has a thread somewhere that will make your tank immortal (taking only 1 point of damage) if you feel like being overpowered. It involves taking Turn the Bolt and Turn the Blade, stacking armor, and applying weak status on your enemies (Rift Mage is best at this).

i put all the point in Blackwall into champion/vanguard trees, crafted tier 3 armor and have two items that give me a change to be invulnerable to any damage for like 5 seconds, playing on hard and he is not dying at all.

The weapon and shield tree SUCKS for tanking. Dump all your points into Vanguard and Champion and you will never ever die. I made a video about this ![]()

"how to be less squishy tank" = simple answer, don't rush like a headless chicken, you're not the point of this game.
Your job is to... you guessed it, SHIELD WALL.
99.9% of the Threathening operations i've failed is due to a tank that think he's a DPS, and rushes into the mobs and dies. 97% our operations fail because the ROGUE thinks he's the top of the litter..

It all comes to your gear, build and positioning.
You where saying?
Sadly everything fight has been tune down for casual, and the only difference in nightmare is that mobs have more hp/ressist/defense (/yawn). They hit as hard as casual mode. And if you're champion going with 2handed tanking is more fun that the afk/faceroll shield and board.
However, even without an optimized build/gear this dragon can easily be done at level 8 or 9.

Which is the point of this thread?
And yes, you can kill the Ferelden Frostback at level 8. At that point you get the required armor to do it.
It's not feasible to do before 10 though, given you want that 30% fire resistance belt. That requires every shard in Hinterlands, Storm Coast and Oasis. If you just go for the shards you are wasting your time in the long run.
Oh, and DA:I is all about gear and build. The only fight that requires some tactic are, in fact, The Ferelden Frostback pre skyhold, level 8-12. The fight last between 10-30 minutes. After that it's all a cakewalk.

Everyone already posted a good tanking guide and build, not point paraphrasing what you guys already said.
Plus I just wanted to say that you do not need the fire resist belt to kill the drake. you just have to make sure to deflect the fireball and charge/roll away from the fire breath. then, the AI can AFK dps the dragon with the right positioning, and some micro management now and there.
I wish I could upload a video of me doing so, but I've done it on my second run at level 9. 0 fire resistance gear, no class specialization, and the fight (I do like to pause a lot) lasted around 5min? max 10.
Cassandra Tank,
Vivienne and Dorrian with Frost staff spamming enhanced energy barrage (really good sustain dps at low level with the fire crit proc build),
Dual Wield rogue

I would love to see a 5 minute kill at level 9. My quickest was 12 minute at level 11, being an archer, and longest was 25 minutes, being a mage at level 11.

I disagree with a lot of this build. I don't see anything that it does that a S&S warrior with a couple of the key Vanguard abilities couldn't also do better. If anything, your video showed that Wall of Fire is the best tanking ability, because Blackwall only had like two enemies on him at any given time, which doesn't showcase much.
I mean, these are all of the abilities that do nothing for your tank's own defenses:
1. It'll Cost You
2. Cutting Words
3. Bodyguard
4. Not Today
Unbowed and Still Standing, while they do add to defenses in some way, are pretty bad abilities in my opinion. Guard doesn't last very long on Nightmare and it's on a whopping 32 second cooldown. Charging Bull is way better, and it's worth taking control of your tank for a few seconds to use (because, yes, the AI sucks at using it). Also, as a random aside, I've found that it's best to jump to cancel Charging Bull rather than trying to deactive it.
So how would a S&S character with actual mitigation abilities in place of these non-mitigation abilities just not be better at mitigation?
Also, as other's have pointed out, you can get ridiculous damage reduction with the S&S tree (to the point of taking one damage), and that that point, why wouldn't you want the extra damage it provides? I plan on using Iron Bull as my tank next time just because a lot of tanking is overkill.
