I'm thinking about starting a nightmare playthrough, but I couldn't deside what sort of character would be best for it.

To be honest, Knight Enchanter (mage spec) is so overpowered that I'm seriously expecting it to get a nerf in the near future. It's the clear stand-out spec. So if you're planning to do one, get your KE run in now before it gets scaled back (I'll be doing this just as soon as I've finished my first playthrough).

If being overpowered doesn't appeal, then it depends whether you're playing with Friendly Fire on. (As an aside, I don't recommend it - it seems notably poorly balanced. But YMMV...) If so, then like in DA2, a party with 3-4 ranged members is ideal. And since there are times when a melee companion is desirable/compulsory, it's best to go ranged. Which means archer (for which Tempest is best) or a non-KE mage. Necromancy seems a little underwhelming, so Rift Mage is probably the better pick of the mages. Thankfully either of these choices kicks a LOT of butt.

If you're not playing with Friendly Fire, then Warrior is worth a run simply because it's more involved, fun, and better implemented than in any DA game before. And all 3 warrior specs rock.

I've heard DW rogue is the runt of the builds this time round. Though I have to say my DW rogue companion does absolutely fine (though much less so in big boss - and dragon - battles).

Also a consideration - you might get the occasional bit of additional content if you are adventuring with your love interest, so it's nice to keep a regular party slot for them. And since I find it's often a waste to have two identical party members, I usually try not to be the same build as my LI. But YMMV on that too.

Honestly anything works. KE is silly, as in you can maintain invulnerability. A 1 tank and 3 ranged setup tends to make things easier too. For my second run I'm a Rift Mage. It's quite powerful if built correctly. I like running with two mages as this allows for them both to go deeper into their trees rather than have one mage try to be a jack of all trades. My first run was a Tempest Archer that didn't exploit the focus bug and that was quite powerful too. DW rogue is, from what I inderstand, completely viable if you're willing to do a bit more micro managing.

Thanks for the help, I thought KE would be the best for the job. Maybe a S&S Warrior too would be good with too mages and Sera or Varric

Another question: If I finish on nightmare, do I get both the achievements for the nightmare and hard playthroughs?

I believe you do the Herald achievement that requires hard difficulty states that the game must be on at least hard so I suppose if you go straight for nightmare you will get both.

S&S warrior on nightmare can get enough armor so you only take 1 damage per hit from the front. Pair with a guard-on-hit weapon and you're basically invulnerable. Keep enemies aggroed and you shouldn't have any real trouble.

As for damage dealing, Rogue is easily number one. Tempest's fire flask has a glitch where you can use your focus ability as often as you want once it's up, and assassin has an ability that essentially doubles all the damage dealt by your party over 8 seconds, letting people do ridiculous things like 100k+ damae, considering that it can crit.

S&S Warrior is pretty basic, guard when being attacked, taunt+grappling chain to tank for your team, use and craft the best armor you can.

Then probably Champion is the "easiest" warrior specialization to play. Get 5 seconds free invulnerability when close to death, 8 seconds of invulnerability with walking fortress. Then whenever you need to kill a really tough enemy, use to the death, and run in circles kiting him while your teammates chip him down.

With DW rogue you have to be very careful not to take any agro or be hit by AOE attacks (by 2 handers and alike). Mages take some time to figure out the best way to be effective in terms of spell selection and use (and thus skill progression).

I guess any type of archer is also pretty easy, just get Cass and/or Blackwall to tank for you, then fire away from range, go stealth if you do accidentally draw aggro.

nightmare run for me is a champion sword and board warrior, or a knight enchanter mage.

keeping your pc from getting damaged is what these two classes are all about, and its all about survivability on nightmare.

Can someone explain to me the point of this?

So many people are saying stuff like that -- "I've gotta get my amulet of power abuse nightmare playthrough done before it's nerfed!!!!" "Gotta do it on overpowered KE before it's nerfed!!"

Uh... why? Congratulations, you beat a single player game with a broken class/feature. You must be so proud. What an achievement.

I just finished my first playthrough of the game.   It was nightmare with no FF.    I did a mage/necromancer which worked out pretty well.    Honestly, I get the impression most classes will do just fine.

1) Reaver Warrior.

2) Assassin DW Rogue.

or

2) Tempest *whatever* Rogue

3) Artificer Archer

4) Rift mage

I do not recommend Knight Enchanter, as its a very particular playstyle - you either enjoy it a lot, or you are bored and got a terrible specialization for the rest of the game. I also do not recommend Necromancer, as it simply doesn't give you what you need to be efficient. Out of the ones I mentioned, it's all prefference in which archtype you prefer. Warrior, Rogue, Archer or Mage.

if the question comes up:

1) "Builds before I get specialization?" - go here http://forum.bioware...skyhold-builds/

2) "Which specialization is best?" - They are very well balanced. This is how it works:

Knight Enchanter, Reaver and Tempest changes the playstyle. Everything else adds to it.

Tempest - Changes the stealth playstyle of a Rogue to a more control/pseudo warrior oriented one.

Assassin - enforces the stealthy playstyle.

Artificer - Adds another layer to the stealth playstyle.

Knight Enchanter - Turns your mage into a Jedi. Same as the old Arcane Warrior. Melee-mage-sort-of.

Rift mage - Adds another layer to the mage playstyle. Both via setting up combos and by regaining mana.

Necromancer - Adds another school of spells to the mage. Nothing changes on your playstyle other than another spell or two, and some passive mana/health regen.

Reaver - You skip all your abilities, and rely on a fast hitting Dragon Rage. Changes the playstyle.

Champion - Adds to the tankiness of a warrior. No change in playstyle.

Templar - Adds another layer to warrior playstyle. Combos and control, with support added on top.

See the pattern? 1 specialization changes your playstyle a lot(Reaver, Knight Enchanter and Tempest). Another changes it a little.(Rift mage, Templar and Artificer) The last one just adds a little to the top of your old one.(Necromancer, Champion and Assassin).

Very well balanced setup, in my opinion! Pick whatever playstyle fits you. You can easily go without any specialization as well!

3) "What class is the best?" - None. All of them.

Warrior snb - Tank. Lives forever. Deals Mediocre damage.

Warrior 2h - Controlled dps. Lots of CC. Mediocre to good damage.

Rogue DW - Burst dps. Lots and lots of damage.

Rogue Archer - Ranged damage. Less than DW, but constant uptime. Can dispatch enemies before they get close.

Mage dps - Aoe dps. **** goes boom regardless of the way you build.

Mage support - barrier everywhere. Nobody will die!
