For the most part, Bioware, you have written incredible characters.  The dialogue and interactions between the companions and advisors are amazing.  I love Cassandra to death, and Solas is probably one of the most interesting and twisty character ever.

I just have to say......it seems like the female romances often involve a sucker punch somewhere along the line.  Let's just look back at recent history:

SPOILERS FOR INQUISITION, DA2, DAO, MASS EFFECT

DA:O:

Romance Alistair--If you want to both live, Alistair has to impregnate another woman.  Ouch.

DA2:

Romance Anders:  He blows up the Chantry and touches off a huge cluckfest.  Freakin' A, Anders!

Mass Effect 3:

Romance Thane:  He dies.

Romance Jacob:  He leaves you.

And here in DA:I:

Romance Blackwall:

He's actually a former-mercenary who ordered a massacre of children, but now he's reformed, right?  Right?  Also old enough to be daddy in some scenarios.

Romance Solas:

He leaves you and

Spoiler

There is a trend here!  I agree that these twists can add depth, but it just seems like if you want a "happy" romance, you have fewer options available to you than to the male romances.  Can we add these same twists to the male romances, or have the twists be less punch-in-the-gut-like for the females?  Pretty please with ice cream and brownies?

I've heard Iron Bull is kind of like a fling, rather than a relationship, though I haven't had a character go all the way through it yet.  Cullen's is sweet indeed, and he is so adorable.  Solas just fascinates me, and I would love to have my character romance him, except for the whole leaving part....

Btw I would seriously edit out your Solas spoiler, please do.

But anyways, I'm curious - why are you saying you can't have happy romances if you are aware of Bull and Cullen?

He's not really? Once you give him the necklace he's pretty devoted. Hell he's my favorite romance.

And Cullen's definitely devoted.

I put Solas into spoiler tags, good idea.

I'm not saying the females can't have happy romances, just that they are less likely.  It seems like 1/3 to 1/2 have a gut punch written into them somewhere, compared to the male side.

Maybe I'll try Iron Bull then.  He's pretty awesome.

Ryzaki:  Your signature says pretty much everything lol.

Oh and Alistair will dump you if you make him king without "hardening" him.

I feel the romances are alright. I always think back to Baldur's Gate and it helps me feel better.

What about Zevran, Fenris, Cullen, Kaidan, Garrus and Iron Bull?

You've simply picked and chosen the ones that back up your point and ignored the ones that refute it.

I was mentioning the romances that had something big n' bad happen.  For male and female.  Notice there aren't any for males :)  I never said all of the female romances were bad, just that several of them knock the wind out of you, whereas that doesn't really happen for the male romances.

Well, I suppose. Though, don't forget, Morrigan just up and left at the end of DAO.

Witch Hunt did remedy that, though.

You forgot Anoman. The only female romance in BG2. And he was a huge jerk. So, there is a little bit of improvement since then.

Anders was available for males too, and the gut-punch at the end is just as gut-punchy. Unless you're only counting straight romances, which is a different consideration, I suppose!

Cullen is great if you're a straight female and want a sweet, low-drama romance story.

Personally, I'm really digging Solas's romance story (but I'll confess I enjoy tragic romance as much as sweet)

I think I just have fantastic taste in men.

Zevran, Fenris, Cullen...

To be fair, there was a bit in the center there where Fenris went all wacky hijinks, but he manages to get his **** together by the end of the game.

On the whole, though, I agree with you.  The male romances don't seem to have nearly the track record of complete unmitigated disaster as us ladies.

And I'm still not complaining.  If we want equality, then the dudes should get more disasters, not us get less.  I tend towards masochistic drama plot twists, myself.  They keep stories interesting.  Unresolved sexual tension being king, and all that.

Josephine is also an adorable romance option for females. So is Sera, and Iron Bull, and Cullen. Zevran has already been mentioned, and Leliana from Origins as well. Isabela and Merrill were also pretty good for romance, and this is all just from Dragon Age. Traynor was a great romance, as well, so was Garrus, and Kaiden, and I'd count Samara, too, though it's not a fully-fledged option. Liara was pretty consistent. Silk Fox and Sky, from Jade Empire? Juhani?

For the males, Anders and Fenris were both angsty, and the former had an incredible gut-punch, and they were male options as well. Someone already mentioned Morrigan. There're more that I could mention, but I'm too lazy to look up the details.

There're far more adorable romances than doomed ones in both genders, imo. I like that BioWare includes actual plot drama into relationships, and I find them more interesting that way (as long as the drama isn't contrived).

I disagree. You forgot all the good ones.

In DA:I there's also Cullen as well as Iron Bull, and Bull isn't a fling. Bull is awesome, light and easy-going. Cullen is awfully sweet and romantic.

While Blackwall isn't a character any of my Inquisitors will romance he is still one of the most interesting characters story-wise. And Solas has one of the best romances, the fact that he breaks it up is heartbreaking but also necessary. He is a great character.

In DA:2 there's Fenris. He is angsty, but less angsty than Anders and is way more tolerable. And I don't mention he is awfully loyal to Hawke either way.

In DAO there's Zevran. He is fun, he is great and he is complex.

ME we have Garrus and Kaidan - those two are better than all the sexy ladies of all three Mass Effects combined imo.

I'm glad we girls have variety.

Yep, there are a lot of options for both male and female.  I'm just saying the female options have more of the gut punchers than the males.  I'd like to see some drama added to the male romance options, and have it toned down a bit for the female ones.

BW has a history of a lot of romance options, which is why I didn't list them ALL above.  I just wish that the female (sorry, yes, straight female), options didn't keep ending up badly.  It's always the most interesting ones (to me) that seem to have the worst endings lol.

Oh geez Anomen.  He drove me nuts.  I always wanted to romance Valygar.  Yes, there has definitely been improvement!  And I have high hopes of a Solas DLC (a la Witch Hunt), that would make his romance completely awesome.

There have definitely been good BW romances--I love the ears off of Fenris--But it really seems like the straight female options get socked as often as not.

You have more romance options than hetero men.   /smallest violin

Every character is supposed to bring some level of drama.  Frankly I thought these were some of the best romances this time around (not that it says much) besides most of the bi-sexual characters which have poor writing due to having to satisfy both genders.  I know this because I'll watch my wifes character romances (we share the stories) and thought they were good.

My romance with Josephine was horrible as in the whole thing felt horribly written and shallow.  I disliked it so much on my second play-through I just romanced Cass again.  Wonder what my other options are...  oh wait.

Disliked Seras after watching a vid.  Thought Dorians (along with his personal quests) was quite good.

And thats the reason I never play BG without mods.

To be fair Inquisition has fewer romance options for straight males in general. Besides, Cass and Josie already deviate from battle bombshells and look at the 'feedback' they both got. Imagine if BW added heavy drama in addition to their personalities/romances.

We girls have 4 options, two out of them have gut punches, and only one leaves you. The other two lack any drama. I think its fair, especially if viewed in comparison to what we've got for Mass Effect.

I understand where you are coming from OP especially when you get attached to a certain character, but Isn't it better if we have more variety?

If you don't mean always, you probably shouldn't say "always." I know that "romances involving a male LI involve a gut punch somewhat more often than romances involving a female LI" doesn't have much punch, but you really should stick closer to the facts if you don't want your thread starting off with a whole bunch of corrections to your opening thesis.

I'd say that Viconia's actually the all-time record as far as Bio gut-punches go, FWIW. Bastila might make the cut, if it wasn't so easy to fix stuff later.

RShara I really agree with you on this one. Cullens romance is wonderful and the one romance I will do again.

Sola's romance was to me more of a serious flirt. Two really passionate kiss scenes and a dance and then mostly my mage just running to him looking for convesation which was used up pretty quickly. The ending  of it all didn't make sense either, he acts all smitten and tells you you are great then just says he's taken too much of your time and that's it, job done.

With Cullen you get to visit him, heaps of dialogue and kisses whenever you want...ahhh so sweet. Oh he's a sugar that's for sure.

Solas is absolutely fascinating and beautiful but so so distant. Drove me completely crazy, Definitely wont be doing him again. Would have liked to have seen more romance scenes with him, it just didn't feel romantic enough somehow.

Yeah Blackwell doesn't appeal at all for every conceivable reason lol. Bull seems ok for a 'good time not a 'long time'

At least we got  bashful romantic Cullen! His romance is wonderful!! :D

I love Cullen's little smirk when your character asks for a kiss.  He's also the only one I remember that kisses first.  I know Kaidan you practically had to jump, Thane and Garrus you had to "convince" to stay and Solas you also kiss first.  I don't think I've seen Blackwall's and I can't remember Iron Bull's off the top of my head.
