A good sum up of the complaints i see on this forum. And my question is, why can't try Bioware something different? Like try to blur the line between two types of games. It's called innovation.
And also have a second question: all the people who like the mix between shooter and story driven RPG are idiots?

My point is ME 1 was far more of merge of fps and rpg then ME2, they praticaly made it an fps.The reason why I say its for idiots, is the powers and gear you use doesnt really matter with the limited amount of options they gave us to customize our characters.

Unimpressed. I feel like they're actually a step backwards from ME1. It's like they tried to make everything look more "real" but it just didn't work and instead it just looks like bad CG. The new lighting engine makes everything seem WAY darker and increasing the brightness just washes everything out. ME1 had much softer, more natural lighting by comparison. Lighting in ME2 simply seems too harsh, like everywhere you go you're standing under a glaring spotlight. Also, character textures seem very grainy and chunky, and the environments I've played through so far have been rather uninspired and sterile. I'm also a bit perdturbed at the amount of pre-rendered footage I've seen so far, compared to the 100% in-engine ME1...
Interface
I don't like the new menu system or overlays. The tiny character portraits at the bottom center of the screen look out of place and are distracting... and I still haven't figured out where my own health bar is. What was wrong with the old style HUD? Every time I get a new journal update or pick up a new item, rather than getting a nice little "Journal" or "Item Received" notice I get a MASSIVE block complete with child-friendly images that takes up half my screen. I wish there was a way to turn that off. Also, the decrypting and overriding minigames? The QTE minigames of ME1 may have been uninspired, but at least they were quick. I don't exactly relish having to spend 30+ seconds playing "memory" or "match the wall 'o text" every time I want to crack open a wall safe. Franky, I was sick of it after the 2nd or 3rd time.
Gameplay
Okay. I didn't like the idea of the new ammo system from the moment it was announced, but I was told to give it a chance. After 3 hours, I think it's fair to say that a chance has been given. I still hate it. Okay, so rather than the "frustration" of having to stop in the middle of a firefight for 2-3 seconds and wait for my weapon to cool down, now I have to stop in the middle of a firefight for 2-3 seconds and wait for my weapon toreloadeject it's heatsink. The only difference is, if I run out of heatsinks my weapon becomes useless. Oh, and don't let me forget the wonderful new annoyance that is forgetting that I have to reload now and running into combat without realizing I only have 1-2 shots left (I guess the gun is still white-hot from that firefight 5 minutes ago?). That's bit me more than a few times already. Also, why couldn't dropped heatsinks simply be added to your inventory automatically instead of forcing you to run over them to pick them up? Not only does it mean I have to leave cover and get shot at while I scrounge for heatsinks, but it just plain looks and feels retarded. "Pickups" are something best left to Halo or Ratchet & Clank, and left out of Mass Effect.
Also, the planet scanning mini-game. My God... where to begin? I practically fell asleep scanning my first planet. Granted, it was almost 4am at the time, but still. Tedious doesn't begin to describe it. It probably took as long to scan a single planet as it would have to land the Mako in ME1 and search it on foot. The difference is that now you're just staring at a slowly spinning planet while your targeting cursor makes pass after pass at a snails pace and you wait for your controller to rumble. Then you get to launch one of your finite probes and watch your resource bar increase by a hair's width. This is not fun. This is the opposite of fun.
Overall I'm pretty disappointed in ME2. I feel like in trying to fix what was admittedly lacking in ME1, BioWare overcompensated and just ended up screwing up things that weren't broken. I'm really hoping it picks up as the game goes on, because what I've seen so far has me more than a little worried...
Do you know what the most unimportant thing in the world times a thousand equals?
Your opinion. Who cares what you think? If you didnt enjoy it, trade it in and get your money back stop giving people bad impressions thinking this game will suck.
You did not even say anything postive at all. What about the cutscene's? The story? Character's?

whats faster to get through armor regular ammo or incendeniary?
whats a more effective way of removing a shield from an enemy?
the options and depth to approaching to combat and gameplay is still there. I personally enjoy the direction that bioware went with the game and was impressed. Looking forward to getting off work and getting back into the game.
Also if you are saying a shooter isn't what Bioware is they should stick to RPG's....then what was Bioware doing when they made MDK2 (which was a great game).

I respect you opinion but I don't think that ME1 worked that well in first place. Some RPG elements were a chore for non-RPG players, and the combat was a failure as a shooter. I'm not saying ME2 is perfect, but I think that is close to Bioware's intentions.

They couldve improved the fluid motion of combat without getting rid of customization. But since they are owned by EA they probaly got forced into dumbing it down for the masses.

Thanks for your first impressions. However I too will reserve judgement until Friday (UK Release). Though I suspect you have some more than valid points, I never expected ME2 to be perfect in every way. For every niggle solved from ME1 by Bioware, surely they will inadvertently create new ones for ME2. Doesnt this happen in nearly every game? I do agree with you on pickups though!! Just finished Borderlands, and although quality, thought I had left annoying pick ups behind, especially ammo in 'mid battle'.

It won't change the fact it still feel like a console port
And the UI CLEARLY is designed with console first mindset. especially inventory.

FINALLY somebody who agrees with me and my soulcrying about that HORRIBLE planet scanning! And yes, I also think it's UTTERLY RETARDED that BioWare decided to 'fix' the overheating by adding... well, a reloading system into the game. Why the f*** they still called it differently than that beats me.

Ya i shouldve said shooter but still you understood my point. With the limited amount of options on how to customize your character's play style, why even have em in there since it doesnt have an effect on your survivability.Thats why I say its a shooter.
Fair enough i'll give you that to some extent. Though from what ive seen and heard the power system is still quite good, armor atleast for sheapard is fine(im disapointed by the lack of NPC customization). However armor isn't what a RPG is all about. It would be differnt if the stroy telling wasn't as good as it is, but that was'nt your point.

Indeed. Everything in ME2 feels so much more streamlined so you can focus on the story.
A story that's laid out before you. I'm many hours into the game right now and I'm not surprised yet with anything. It's... SO linieair!! I just can't get attached to the story, so far. It's like I'm having a grocery list before me: Pick up this one, this one, this one, this one, this one and this one and then f*** those Collectors up!
It was basically the same with Dragon Age: Seek alliance with this one, this one, this one and this one and f*** those Darkspawn up!
Where are the good old times where you stumble unto the major threat while playing? I'm kinda sick and tired of Journals telling me exactly what to do and where to go. I can freakin' check my Journal in order to see when I've completed the game! Bah.
I might get flamed for this, but to me BioWare is getting weaker at making good, intriguing and compelling stories. Yes, I use KOTOR 1 as comparison.
