Is anyone else seeing this? After character creation the character is stuck in an empty mountainous area near Haven instead of waking up in the dungeon. I saw it any time I made a mage, and so has one other person. Yesterday I heard of someone seeing it on anything but rogue, but then it started doing it for rogue as well for them. This completely breaks the game, as there is no way to get out of it.

Summary:

  • Newly-created character is stuck in an empty mountainous area near Haven at beginning of game.
  • Unable to save character, health bar at a small sliver, 8/8 health potions and 3 available spell talent points
  • Nothing to interact with, no beginning-of-game instructional text
  • Able to walk to Haven, and even to the Temple
  • Appears to be machine-specific (happens on some machines & not others); my machine's stats:
    • Intel Core i7 950 3.07Ghz Quad Core, 12 GB RAM, NVidia 750 Ti with updated drivers, game settings optimized through GeForce Experience, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 1.2TB available disk space. Hard drive is a little under a year old - had to replace a failing one last Christmas.
  • Doesn't matter if the character is customized or if one of the defaults is used. Race doesn't appear to matter, either.
  • Making another class (rogue) worked fine for me; others are seeing this on warrior and rogue as well
These were my steps to reproduce:
  • Load up Dragon Age: Inquisition
  • Click Continue to get to the Main Menu
  • Choose New Game
  • Choices: Female > Human > Mage or Female > Elf >Mage. Import your world state from the Keep.
  • Intro starts: She stands up, then you are taken to character creation
  • Choose Head 5 then press Select (use the default)
  • Intro continues: wake up in mountainous area, run from many-eyed bugs, try to reach shiny lady, then collapse back in real world and your passed-out body is surrounded by 3 warriors, blades drawn.
  • Goes to loading screen.

Expected result:
Character should wake up in the dungeon.

Actual result:
Character wakes up in empty mountainous area.

If anyone else has seen this, has other info, or knows of any other fixes or workarounds that are not listed on the above linked page, please let me know.

Are you using the 60fps cutscene fix? That will cause this. You need to launch from origin to create the character, and once you're out of the prison, you can save, quit, adn restart with the fix.

If you unlocked your FPS in cutscenes you can't make a new character. If you've modded your shortcut don't use it and make another for the sole purpose of chargen.

You also can't do multiplayer.

Ya know.. I do think i had the shortcut set to the 60fps for a time. And then I took it off, which I think is around when Origin prompted me. And I'm not sure if I was starting from Origin or the shortcut during my testing.

Thanks guys :) I'm going to see if I can reproduce it again with the shortcut parameter put back in.

This happened to me the first time I played on release. So I didn't even know it was a bug and spent hours running around wondering where I'm supposed to go.

In my case I believe I made the mistake of running the game on max setting that my pc at the time could not handle. Also, most likely a combo of the fps issue that was there on launch.

How did you fix it?

I've had a couple more people show up on my site with this bug - one who just installed the game last night.

Very good info on the problem. Also, had it myself.

My interpretation of the problem is that the new game has no world state loaded, default or custom. The solution I found is:

1. start the orgins client

2. login .. I thinks it's here where it asks you which world you want to import.

3. start new game

4. from the card selection, select your World State

5. do the CC

6. happy gaming

It's apparently already on their list of known issues, but haven't seen them mention it since about the 20th. It's still happening to people so Patch 2 didn't help it, either.

I'll be making some saves for a couple of people tonight and tomorrow and emailing them to them so they can play. If anyone would like one, tweet me @princesstabbity or contact me on my site here. You can send me your world state in the Keep, and even send me screen shots of the character creator sliders if you like so I can make it look how you want. Offer's open if anyone ever needs it :)

I verified the 60fps cutscene command line options caused this for me too. We essentially remain in the map where the initial cutscene happens. Something about having smooth cutscenes prevents the game from loading the prison map. I disabled the options, re-created my character, got to a point where I could save, and re-enabled the options. I like having smooth cutscenes, thanks! :)
