Are you sure that's even possible? Doesn't the Guard tool tip say you need a Shield??
PS- shows you that i don't play warrior. was thinking of shield wall, nvm me.

Unbowed and Warcry both generate a lot of guard instantly. Just make sure you have armor good enough for guard to be of use after you Warcry with Bull.

Warcry can create a good amount, keep in mind he'll pull a lot of agro that way though. I think it's ironic that the biggest and supposedly one of the physically strongest characters seems to be one of the squishiest, lol.

With Fade-Touched Obsidian, you can craft a weapon that generates Guard with every hit.

Sten had this problem too, I recall. Must be a Qunari thing.

@Ferretinabun
I really liked Sten as a warrior once I learned how badass Indomitable was, which I didn't learn until Awakening when I at first felt "stuck" with Ogren, till he tought me the beauty of 2handers. I STILL remember when on my to the end boss, he was literally COVERED in those weird bug creature things to the point that I couldn't even see him and just as I was running over to "save" him, he whacked back a pack of them and started laughing about his "happy dance"! Good times.

In Redcliffe Village. In one of the houses - I think inside one of the locked houses. MIGHT need the Deft Hands Fine Tools perk to unlock it, in fact. :-/

I know. Here is this towering mass of muscles and he is always the first one to drop in fights. I take a look at him and think **** that guy can probably take a dragon on his own. Then I watch him get his ass kicked in every fight, so disappointing.

My 2H DPS inquisitor uses Charging bull for Guard generation when needed. Hes DPS so i dont want to use taunts to gen guard.
The key with 2handers is not being attacked so they dont need guard....but with the AI its not that simple.
I would honestly switch him to w&s instead and use him as a tank.

Theses Core Abilities should help Iron Bull out.
1. Block N Slash- Damage is So-So, but the important thing is the guard generation 15% cause without guard your pretty much just a rogue and thats not good in this case. With the upgrade. Did I mention is has no CD. Sadly this is an overlooked skill. ![]()
2. Challenge- 10% more guard nice, taunts a single enemy if the target is melee then its just a loop of the enemy just attacking bull then getting knockdown via block n slash. With passive bull can do this indefinitely to a single target while your tank holds the rest. 16 sec cd
3. Charging Bull- Another 10% guard gain. He'll mainly this skill just to be brute to opponents whenever its up just utterly be a menace. Even if his target is a mage or archer if it can be knocked down Bull's go it on lock and since most enemy mages/archers run when harassed my melee. The passive is not needed til up get more stamina consuming moves on your him for next stamina move is free. 8 sec CD!!!
Easy 35% guard
Side Note:
With Challenge/Charging Bull has great synergy with reaver due to stamina regen.

its not that hard. the problem you're probably having is that you've probably got him specced as a 2h warrior/battlemaster build. unfortunately as useful as that seems, battlemaster generates very little guard. you probably need to respec and put some points into vanguard. the vanguard class can generate guard like crazy, practically every move causes some degree of guard pickup. the abilities others have mentioned are what youre looking for but they're all vanguard skills.

for me the 2H warrior is the worst character, it's extremely slow, dies easy and generates little guard, no matter how much you level up you can't turn him into a kill machine. Unlike the DW rogue who can at LEAST kill characters before falling, just take a look at the DPS generated by a single dagger and a 2-h weapon and the poor 2H weapon stands behind by a lot, no one hit ko's neither except on feble creatures like the wraith

You do need the perk, and using the chest respawn cheat, you can get multiples of it.
Iron bull generating guard is tough, especially early game. I tend to at least get him war cry and charging bull, but i have war cry disabled unless i tell him to use it as he generates too much aggro. I do sacrifice 4 points for him... I go into sword and shield and get him turn the bolt and bears maul the wolves, these passives work even without the shields and make him way less squishy. Early on, you pretty much have to have him spam charging bull and block and slash to generate guard, after skyhold though put that fade touched obsidian on his weapon, and get another one that isnt 3 guard, as it will stack with 2 and 5 guard, but not another 3 guard, and put it on his armor... no problems after that.

Isn't the point of using Iron Bull to keep him on the brink of death in order to make the most of his Reaver spec?
I barely use him in battle, since I need a sword and shield tank to cover my rogue Inquisitors.

I went all the way on the Unbowed side of that Tank tree. I disabled War Cry on him however, the only skill he uses from that tree is Unbowed and it works wonders.

I finally got Bull to the point where I feel comfortable leaving him on his own. Basically, I only have him using abilities that knock enemies down (i.e. the upgraded harpoon, the charge, the 2h smash) and challenge. The final piece of the puzzle was the weapon I found with +3 Guard per hit. I just point him at individual soft targets and let him go. Once all the archers and mages are gone, then i let him help Cass out.
It's worked great so far. Thank goodness too. Iron Bull is an awesome character.

Same thing here, while i was able to do solo with 2h warrior just fine when you leave them in hands of AI its disaster. My Iron Bull only had Devour and focus skill slotted from reaver tree as everything else does more harm then good. I'll just mention that charge isn't bad guard generator as well but its best to manually direct it.
And personally i like his character as well and for that reason i gave him sword and shield on 2nd playtrough as you really do not need 2 char on front line especially on nightmare.
