Ever tried to explain the fun of Dragon Age to a cro-magnon gamer?

Does it frustrate you as much as me?  I have a gamer friend who just can't fathom the interactive story that DA is and thinks it has too many cut scenes.  He also thinks the stories in CoD are deep (I wish I was kidding).  He just doesn't consider it a "game" unless it's continuous fighting and action.

It's so hard to discuss without being insulting.

Some people like different games and either can't or don't want to play games with actual story. Your friend enjoys CoD stories, he isn't the type to play DA games or anything of the sort. No need to get frustrated, no need to try explaining it to him.

Problem is, he is the type that takes a very condescending attitude towards thigs he doesn't like or understand.  Unfortunately he is the only coworker I have who is a gamer.

In that case, why bother?

Personally, I would be condescending back about CoD. However, I am a rude bastard.

If they're a co-worker I wouldn't even bother with them. Better to have nobody to talk about games at work with then have one person who is gonna constantly be condescending about the ones you like.

Laughing at the idea that CoD has a "deep story" is also perfectly acceptable =P

LOL, I try not to go out of my way to alienate people, even when they are being a tool.

To give you further insite, he believes all games should have PvP and regularly engages in the type of "PvP" that most consider griefing (like killing newbies over and over).

That's fine and dandy if he's the multiplayer PvP type of gamer, I have a cousin like that. I see his behavior as a reflection of his play style, he's competitive and probably likes being right (or winning) so it's harder to have him acknowledge that story heavy games are just as good as what he likes.

Also I'm going to back up the claim that CoD has a deep story, it does but only for those who wish to dive into it are going to notice it between all the explosions and bullets. Just like how DA has codex, those are there for the lore and story hunters but not forced upon anyone. Sadly this means the story itself for CoD never enforced so to them or anyone it's just seen as PEW PEW PEW.

Just let him be, let him kill his enemies one by one while I conquer the world with a cup of tea and make all my enemies slaves.

I'm in the opposite camp.

If a last boss fight can be fought with a long and complex conversation that makes sense, in which wrong options in conversation can mean the transition to combat - but the right options can lead to a peaceful resolution - then I consider that much more intense and fun than actual combat. Cinematics are enjoyable. Combat IS fun, but the "combat is the only resolution" is so unoriginal.

Unfortunately games do not aim to please the intellectual individual, but the easily-entertained teenager or adrenaline junkie gamer. The same kind that finds car-chases in movies entertaining and not boring.

btw...refuses to "read his games", will only hear lore if it's voiced.

What a shocker. I don't doubt you have a hard time not coming off as insulting when you refer to your gamer "friend" as a Cro-Magnon. I certainly wouldn't want you to be my "friend" if you spoke about me like that behind my back.

Have you ever stopped to think that maybe he just doesn't enjoy games like Dragon Age: Inquisition, and none of your super intellectual lectures will have any affect on him? Maybe you should, you know, discuss Dragon Age: Inquisition with people who like it. Like on this very forum!

It's so hard to respond to posters with these supercilious attitudes without being insulting.

God forbid someone defends a person's taste and condemns you for essentially insulting them due to that same taste.

Why don't you actually read all of my posts.

You know, like the ones where I mention the condescending attitude HE takes towards what he doesn't like or understand.

But then you could feel all self righteous.

I never said your co-worker seems to act any better. Simply that your behaviour, calling him a "Cro-Magnon gamer", is no better than their condescension.

Plus, what he/she does does not justify what you do, in any way whatsoever. Opposite is also true.

I introduced a 'cro-magnon gamer' FIRST to Mass Effect, then lead him down the path of Dragon Age.

I considered the campaign successful when he went out and bought a Xbox 1 and a copy of DA:I

He would probably like Inquisition, then (sadly).

Get over yourself, you are letting your ego get wrapped up in what video games you play, rein that fucker in.  One of my friends only plays brawlers and sports games, he also has a useless Masters in Comparative Literature so we usually have interesting things to talk about at least, but I just resign myself to the fact I am going to be playing Smash or some other nonsense when I'm over at his house.

ell these kind of games (which are arguable the pinnacle of games for me) grow in you in time (IF ONE has the potential to realise the offerings of these games). You have to play one game of this type and then another and another. Slowly while you develop a bond with your character-story-etc you realise that there is something deeper than just action in games to be found. Age is a factor too, i think more grown up are easier to get lost in games like these.

it just takes time for an individual who has the potential to feel these kind of games.
