Hello.

So I haven'{t played the game yet. But I've seen a cutscene where Bull says Tal va-f*cking-shoth.

I want to ask if this is the only case where the swearing is so strong or if there are other moments?

Now I am no anti swearing posh or st. like that so don't judge me. XD I am just interested dragon age changed that much... Cause the F word does not fit to the world of Thedas for me :/

The F-Bomb is used quite frequently in certain character scenes. I was surprised too but I think it just added more dimension to the scene. When Dorian dropped the F-Bomb it was a for a very good reason. When Sera spoke the word it just revealed more about her opinions on the social order.

It's an M rated game. It isn't that I don't understand how people would not want to hear fecking words like feck in a quasi middle ages fantasy but unless it's modded out you just have to fecking deal with it.

Personally, there were many a moment I knew my Quizzy was absolutely saying goddammeeet.

Swearing and maturity have nothing to do with each other.

I think Blackwall actually uses the F word several times.

Swearing and maturity have nothing to do with each other.

Which is why I don't play some of the games that have earned more controversy. Trash is trash, no matter how you frame it. But when a vulgar word is used in a specific way it can add to the game.

I know you did. And there are many people who do not swear even on occasion. It can be as foreign to their vocabulary as actual foreign terms.

And that is fine for you, not saying it isn't. But for many people, that would not be their reaction. So it shouldn't really be forced onto characters. NPCs are one thing, and even then I think there should be more variety(there are only a couple characters I can think of that don't swear) but the protagonist having to say those things is stripping freedom away from what was advertised as the player's character.

I don't believe that anyone said that a swearing option should ever be forced upon the player - nor am I suggesting myself that swearing should ever be the only option for the protagonist. I'm aware that there are others who find it outre and unpalatable. I'm just saying that it would have been nice to have that option for those of people who who find it to be a more emotionally honest and realistic response.

Regarding NPCs specifically, I believe that companions, advisors, etc. should all have their own personalities and should use language that seems appropriate to each of their natures. Maybe it suits some of them to use grittier language, whereas for others it simply doesn't. For example, Iron Bull is someone from whom I would expect to see the liberal usage of stronger language. Josephine is someone...well, I just don't really see her going there under any circumstances.

I think there should be option to enable this strong language. (cause seeing someone naked is one thing but hearing the f* word can really ruin the feeling for someone)

With all the voice recording they have done I think that st like this is not entirely stupid idea...

The part you are replying in bold about wasn't accusing anyone here of saying that, but more pointing out the fact that Bioware has been doing it with the protagonists recently. I agree fully with there being an option for those who want to have that kind of vocabulary and an option for those who don't.

Again, I agree. I just said that I think there should've been more diversity among them. The only two of the twelve main followers who don't swear if I recall correctly is Cole and Josephine. The other ten do, although a couple not so much.

This. Character-appropriate language is great. Whether the character likes to swear, or their speech is slangy or sesquipedalian...

IRL, some people say "fcuk" all the time, just like some people say "Jesus Christ!" or "geez" or "dangit", and some people never curse at all. In DA, some people say "Maker's breath" instead of "Holy sh1t"... it's a character thing. I don't see why this would bother someone out of universe.

Yes, just wanted to make sure it's clear to everyone that neither I nor - in all likelihood - anyone else, wants to see that sort of thing forced on anyone. However, as far as the issue of BioWare's more recent protagonists...I don't recall ever actually being forced to swear, but I suppose it may have come up as a result of selecting a paraphrased option. I mean, who knows, it's been a while since I've played ME3, etc. - heh.

Well in my language when someone use word f*ck, it is like saying that you are an idiot. Pretty loud and clear (nevertheless, may people in my country swear these days :D ) so sorry for not wanting swears in this game I love more than any :D

But now I am very interesting how does Dorian says the F word. Cause you yaoi-fagals have been talking about it like it was main thing in the game :P

Have you not heard it?

I guess, NSFW swearing warning: http://youtu.be/G3Ode-rqc2w

I wasn't too fond of the sudden vulgarity in Inquisition. Don't get me wrong, I can make Sera look PG if you catch me in the right setting, so I have nothing against swearing. However, in the Dragon Age setting, it felt out of place. The past two games have had culture specific swears, curses we'd expect in this world. Adding real word swears like the F word seemed really out of place to me. Now I know sometimes we might need something more extreme than Andraste's knicker weasels, but I would have preferred things that felt more familiar to Dragon Age. To me, falling back on the F word just felt like a lack of creativity on the writers' part, and an attempt to be more 'edgy' as an AAA game. I would have been much more interested if Bull fell back on qunari curse words when emotional. It's his native tongue after all.

I'm glad they didn't do that. The whole "foreign characters only curse in their native language" is way overdone. When I'm speaking English, I curse in English. I usually only go for words and expressions in other languages when I can't find a worthy equivalent in the one I'm speaking, like Bull does with the whole "with great respect" thing, not with the easiest words and curses.

Fair enough. It's nice to get a perspective from someone who's bilingual. I still would have preferred something more fantasy than frequent F-bombs though. I wouldn't mind so much if they'd ever done it before. As it stands it feels jarring.

This is exactly how I feel. When the word s*** started to be used in DA2, I felt it sounded out of place, too modern. F*** definitely feels too modern to me. It takes me out of the world of Thedas for a little bit every time I hear it. Thedas has its own curses like Maker's breath and flames. I'd like to hear more of those lore-bared curses. It really does feel like the writers just added s*** and f*** to make the game more edgy and "mature." I just find it lazy writing.

But "f*ck" (the word, not the... deed) has been around since the 1400s. It doesn't feel all that modern to me. YMMV, of course.

I don't know. Maybe it's just being a fan of Game of Thrones and Spartacus: Blood and Sand that's gotten me used to vulgarity in fantasy/period settings, but I honestly welcomed it's inclusion.

The F word is a staple in so may societies, books, TV, comedy and movies it rarely gets a rise from me... favourite comedian Billy Connolly (and his great use of the F word... all the best Billy)... It isn't that it is used in DA:I that makes you blink... it just lacks the impact it should have when it is used... more conviction Bull, you sounded more like a poddy calf.

Oh god I hate the phrase "the F-bomb"
In Britain it is used every other word, Americans make it seem like it is a massive feckin deal to say it.

Why is America always the target? It's either "Americans are such prudes" or "Americans are so uptight" or what you said in the quote. It's like people outside the US haven't actually spoken to or been around people from the US.

Yep, very true.

The etymology of the word is up for debate (some say Latin, some say Germanic,) but the first known use of it in a more modern sense came from a poem written in 1475.

Oke, in the video it seems he have a reason to swear... But I still think that "Bloody legacy" would fit better to the game. And it would be a lot more sexy too :D

It made me cringe every time I heard it and took me right out of the game. I'm hoping it doesn't show up in future dialogue because it did not work.

Why does anyone even care anymore? We're not children, This is an 18 plus game so I think we should be able to hear a swear word without bursting into hysterics.
