I see this tip come up all the time in the loading screens: "Shoot a phantom's sword to remove its melee capabilities..." But I've never been able to do this. What am I missing???

 

I'm just wondering if anyone has done that or if it can be done on a regular basis. Basically I would just appreciate a 411 about it. Is there some trick to doing it? Do you need a specific weapon to do so?  I was doing a few matches last night and I even prolonged a lot of waves trying to pull it off, but to no avail  . I have enough trouble just trying to hit the skittish little ******* in any case, especially when they cloak; to say nothing of aiming for their hand. Any suggestions?

 

Additional note:

At the moment I am trying to do it with stasis + viper sniper rifle (I find the viper much more forgiving for my inevitable misses  )

Yeah I've done it before on a semi-regular basis. If you listen you will hear it break.

It is possible... but so not worth the trouble. If you can hit the sword, you can also hit her head and end her.

Hahaha guess I can't really argue with that logic. Does it require a specific weapon? Barriers down?

I've seen her sync kill people after her blade was broken so many times, hell it happened to me two or three times. Which is one of those unique situations where "f*ck this game" and "I ain't even mad, that's amazing!"  apply simultaneously. Just shoot her in the head, OP, that's the only way to be sure.

Once you find out how to do it, you still don't "really" know how to do it. Sometimes you get lucky, on some builds/gear combo's more often than others. But in my experience, it's needs a fair amount of luck.

 

[edit]And once you get a hang of it, you'll find you meet double/triple tapping rocket troopers more often. As well as double or triple phantoms. 

 

Don't focus on it too much. **** happens. Next you'll ask how to disable the magnets in a Banshee's hands

Anyway, yeah, I've broken her sword a few times. For me its always been with a claymore but thats just coincidentally I'm sure (only way I could hope to hit such a small target, I suck). The thing is though, at least for me, she rarely survives more than a second after the sword breaks anyway. Most of the time the very shot that broke the sword also killed her. I don't know, it could be viable but in my experience once the sword is gone shes already dead. Doesn't seem like a practical approach for dealing with phantoms, more of a neat little "ooo, look, the sword shattered" moment. Shoot to kill - if the sword breaks cool, if not... meh, whatever, long as shes dead.

 

Least, thats my opinion.

I've only seen it happen once, and that was just the other day, and by accident (spraying bullets at her torso with a Harrier while she was doing a backflip off a balcony, if I recall correctly).  Might have happened other times too without my noticing.

 

Like the others said, if you're a good enough shot to deliberately hit her sword, you're a good enough shot to hit her head.  Aim there.

It's quite easy if you use something like the Typhoon, PPR or Geth Pulse Rifle. Most of the time you also kill the Geth Rocket Trooper, so it's win/win.

I did, but he's mad because I selfishly took it out.  I'm sorry, Selthae.  *hands bloody, curved & barbed nail bat back to Selthae.*

Pointless ability. Phantoms are dangerous because of the DR and overpowered sniper palm blaster. Nevermind that you are better served with most weapons by headshotting her, but the sword attacks are a joke if your character can dodge. All breaking it does is make her use the black widow or whatever mounted in her hand more.

Also, I've broken the sword only to see her stagger and then immediately Sync a teammate with the hilt somehow, because Biovar.
