In the game start, I have no problem getting through the very first portion but when waking up in the lab, and I go over to "pick up" the pistol from the locker, I can't. I've tried restarting with a different savegame character in case there was some weirdness with that, exiting and restarting my system, etc. No luck. The spacebar just doesn't do anything when standing by the locker (even though the highlight is active).

If anyone has any idea what this is, or even better has advice, your help would be much appreciated.

NOTE: I have a borderline system (2 MB Vista, but nVidia 7050 card on motherboard so uses some of that memory) and have no problem upgrading IF that's likely the problem, I had expected I might need to. I just don't want to e.g. buy more memory and a new video card only to find out that I'm doing something stupid in-game like pressing the wrong key, or finding out that it's an issue specific to something about my system or (etc.).

EDIT and WORK-AROUND: Multiple posts on this topic, I'm far from the only one. Even if the problem is somehow system requirement/video-related, others with greater than minimum specs seem to have the same problem.

What made the game playable for me without too much tedium (right now my character is at Omega, the mission to add Mordin has been completed and he's part of the crew) was: at 800x600 window mode it was still too frustrating, I set it to regular window, then changed the profile for the shortcut to run in XP mode and 640x480. It has to be in window mode or the 640x480 is overridden by the full-screen settngs. After exiting the game the system returns to its normal resolution, no need to reset the system resolution. For many usable items/people the blue crosshair now appears or appeas intermittently without having to use the ESC method detailed in this thread, and for those for which that method is needed, it's reliable.

Problem with this method (aside from the crappy resolution in which there's no point trying to read codex entries) are: unknown if related to the spacebar "use" issue or because I'm playing in an unsupported resolution, but left-clicking doesn't fire weapons. Sigh. At least my character is an Adept with no problem using powers and the NPCs fire away, I still had to set on the easiest difficulty given that "handicap".

I didn't notice this and made a post about the same issue, with less detail, I have the same problem too, I've even tried it on all of the mouse sensitivities... I eventually got the pistol, but when I came across my first door BAM, same problem!

I'm having the same problem. The objects you should be able to interact with aren't highlighting so you can "use" them. If you press ESC to go to the menu, and then ESC back to game, the objects will highlight for a second so you can use them.

But it's going to be a real pain to play through the entire game this way...

I'll give that a try right now.

I agree, in this day and age, this is an outcome that makes a game completley unplayable, very unacceptable in my opinion

I agree and as a question to that temporary fix where is the esc back to game because just clickign esc or the little half circle arrow doesn't highlight an object as a target.

Make sure you're aiming directly at the object (door control, computer, datapad, etc), notice the transparent red box?  When you return to game from the menu, it should turn blue for a second, that's when you can activate it.

I'm still stuck on grabbing the pistol from the container and when I press esc then esc again the red box does not turn blue at all, not even for a fraction of a second. While being right next to it looking directly at it.

I have the same problem. I do see the blue briefly after leave the menu. Is there a fix or do we have to wait for a patch?

Thanks to all, and "Nigerian Banker" especially, so I know I'm not the only one! If it was performance-related for sure I'd happily buy more memory or a new video card, but I don't want to do that only to find out it was some "clipping" setting or something that could be adjusted in .ini files.

Thanks to NB's tip - and trying changing to windowed mode (worked for me...) and doing "escape" and back, it doesn't always turn blue when close, but sometimes it does, and have to time hitting the space bar just right...

If it was just a few items it would be one thing, but after the locker somehow managing to open a later door was a similar exercise in frustration.

EDIT: Info as requested per Bioware post:

1. ME2 CE DVD from EA (one of the ones with the problem Cerberus Network Cards)
2. Intel 2.2 GHz Dual Core, 2MB, nVidia 7050 256MB (system?), driver nvd3dum.dll 196.21 [8.17.11.9621], Vista SP2, DirectX 10.0 (August 2008)

Problem description is as before. Though tedious I was eventually able to get to Jacob etc. but then later got to a door that I couldn't get to turn blue and use. Also some computer terminals I wasn't able to turn blue and use along the way. At least I'll get more work done... Image IPB

Think I have the same problem and I may have a solution. I noticed that I have a lot of problem highlighting some objects like Wilson when I found him. My work around is to turn resolution all the way to the lowest lvl. After that, I have no problem highlighting anything. Though it sucks since the font look crappy now. Mondo disappointment.

Not sure if I have the same problem but my work around may work. Some stuff I have problem highlighting since it only show a brown box when I focus on them and not the blue icon. I got around that problem by turning the resolution all the way to the lowest which seem to fix the problem. Though it turn the font all crappy now. They really need to look into this.

Hey all, was having the same problem. Started for me after landing on Freedom. Was pulling my hair out and found a way around it. I dropped my in-game screen res to 800x600. This seems to have fixed it for me. I can even see the enemies shields/health in fights now. Hope this can be helpful to others.

Confirmed epeeist- space bar works in windowed mode, but in the long run this won't be acceptable. guess it serves us right for buying a game on launch day :P

So is the current solution to run the game in windowed mode? and if so is that an ingame option or possibly from the launcher?

Watching Chuck so haven't tried yet lols

POSSIBLE FIX:

I ran into the space bar issue trying to get to the locker, and again on Freedom when trying to pick up the Iridium from the damaged Mec.

As others have stated, try this and see if it will work:

1 - set the resolution to the lowest level 800x600

2 - run in Windowed mode.

This fixed the issue, but the gaming experience sucks. Serves me right for buying this game on launch day!
