If anyone has any idea what this is, or even better has advice, your help would be much appreciated.
NOTE: I have a borderline system (2 MB Vista, but nVidia 7050 card on motherboard so uses some of that memory) and have no problem upgrading IF that's likely the problem, I had expected I might need to. I just don't want to e.g. buy more memory and a new video card only to find out that I'm doing something stupid in-game like pressing the wrong key, or finding out that it's an issue specific to something about my system or (etc.).
EDIT and WORK-AROUND: Multiple posts on this topic, I'm far from the only one. Even if the problem is somehow system requirement/video-related, others with greater than minimum specs seem to have the same problem.
What made the game playable for me without too much tedium (right now my character is at Omega, the mission to add Mordin has been completed and he's part of the crew) was: at 800x600 window mode it was still too frustrating, I set it to regular window, then changed the profile for the shortcut to run in XP mode and 640x480. It has to be in window mode or the 640x480 is overridden by the full-screen settngs. After exiting the game the system returns to its normal resolution, no need to reset the system resolution. For many usable items/people the blue crosshair now appears or appeas intermittently without having to use the ESC method detailed in this thread, and for those for which that method is needed, it's reliable.
Problem with this method (aside from the crappy resolution in which there's no point trying to read codex entries) are: unknown if related to the spacebar "use" issue or because I'm playing in an unsupported resolution, but left-clicking doesn't fire weapons. Sigh. At least my character is an Adept with no problem using powers and the NPCs fire away, I still had to set on the easiest difficulty given that "handicap".
