Kubrie has been continuing her adventurous wanderings through the Hinterlands, accompanied by Legolas and Gimli Solas and Varric, and the brash, spirited, and very large (even for a qun'ari) mercenary ben-hasserath (sp?) with the unlikely name of Iron Bull. They went to Redcliffe village and found out the first enchanter of the rebel mages not only had no recollection of ever meeting Kubrie in Val Royeaux, she had convinced the rebels to sign up to be servants of a Tevinter magister named Alexius. Wha? She thought the mages rebelled to get away from this kinda thing.
Sidenote: Are the mages the geth of the DA franchise... I mean, sort of?
Ah well, there was one Tevinter mage -- not a magister; he was very clear to make that distinction for all us non-Imperium barbarians -- who seemed to be not completely out of his mind and even offered to help the inquisition both in dealing with Alexius, and also with the larger problem of the big hole in the sky.... whenever we were ready, that is.
Later.
So, back to the Hinterlands to meet up with the master of Horses and kill some bandits, find some shards and another astrarium, and close a couple rifts. I had thought, since Kubrie was now outfitted with a cold-resistant deepstalker hide coat and some pretty fancy daggers, that I might try my luck at the rift by the river.

Almost.
I almost had it! Kubrie is level nine, and everyone else level eight, and as anyone who has played through that riverside rift fight before knows, the demons who pour out of the rift are level 12... so a tough fight ahead. The gang actually got through the first round without too much trouble, a fact which is causing my
for qun'ari inquisitors to increase. Solas took a lot of damage, though, and it was then that I realized I'd forgotten to swap out his cold-based staff for a fire-based one
...anyway
he died fairly early on in the second wave, and deprived the rest of the gang of any barrier help.
As the group ran out of health potions, Varric soon followed Solas on the sidelines and it was up to the qun'ari to get things done. I had respecced iron Bull to sword-and-shield so he had some moderate success generating guard against the demons and was able to stay alive a little longer. However once we were down to the two despair demons at the end, Bull's guard disappeared quickly because he had nothing to hit. The despair demons just kept floating away.
After Bull was knocked out of the fight, Kubrie took a deep breath, went into stealth mode and closed in on one of those floaty b******s. Almost. Couple more hits and there would've been just one left. I think I might've turned the tide. But the second one closed in and hit Kubrie with the cold beam. Deepstalker hide protects against damage (a bit) but doesn't stop the slowing of the movement. She tried to run and find Solas (figuring the barriers would help some), but there was no way to get to him and revive him in time, not without health potions.
Still, I am encouraged to try the fight again, with Solas properly outfitted and potions re-stocked. Whether I succeed or not, I'll be taking a bit of a break from the Hinterlands after this, and heading for the Fallow Mire next.
