You have to admit, the Frostback Basin looks 100x better before it becomes permanently night time. I wish DA:I had a nigh and day cycle. C'mon, Biovare, it's 2015! Games like these need these things to feel immersive.
Right? I think it helps realize that time has passed. Sometimes it feels like no time has passed even though it has. And you know a game on an epic scale like this will have months pass, realistically.
You know, I think this is the reason, why people can't believe that three years should've passed through Inquisition. There's no indication of time development except for the long war table missions and the timed areas in WEWH.
If DAI would have day and night circles it would make much more sense for it to play through three years. I loved it when Crestwood's rainy weather changed to sunny after the Rift under the Lake was closed. They should've done something similar with all areas and not only Crestwood/Frostback Basin.
I'm gonna take the liberty and compare it to Final Fantasy XII. Both games have big areas, and while FFXII didn't have day and night circles, it had different weather at different times and that really made it look like time went by. Also the weather had effects on the fights going on in that place. Here a quote from the FF wiki.
The area's weather and terrain affect the accuracy of ranged weapons and the damage dealt by elemental attacks. In stormy weather crossbows' and bows' accuracy is reduced, and, for example, in rainy weather Lightning damage is boosted while Fire damage is reduced. While terrain is mostly fixed, apart from the Giza Plains that shifts between dry and wet season, weather is often random, depending on what possible weather effects are available for the area.

3 years? WAT?
I like the Day/Night cycle in the Witcher 3, and that Geralt grows a beard. Like, I know it's time for me to do some crap when he is full on mountain man. I take him for a shave and let it start to grow in all over again. Of course, since I tend to play as a broad 99% of the time if given the choice, I wouldn't see that happen on the vast majority of my characters, but still, it is a nice detail that adds to the feeling of time passing. Even if there were mentions of the year or month or something (not that I know how to figure of the days/year system in the DA universe, but I know that there are people here who do).. that would help convey the passage of time - like in Assassin's Creed after you finish a mission it'll say you're in Kingston in July 1715 or whatever when you start the next one. Seasons would also be cool. Why is it always winter in Emprise? It would be neat if I went back there after completing a main mission to see the river flowing again and the snow melted. Or have the trees go from leafy and green to brown and dying like in fall in the Hinterlands.
Also in terms of what I did today (well, this weekend, I'm working now).. I started a new game with a mage. She is Elven and her name is Zoey. I kind of wish we had the option for our elf to be a city elf and not a Dalish elf. I've already gotten all three Nevarran skulls to drop and I'm not even to the battle at Haven yet, so I might make her a Necromancer (I've never gone necromancer). I was thinking Rift mage since I ditch Solas and only take him along when I have to.. but in terms of specialization I usually go with what is easiest to find (usually that is KE since by the time I get to skyhold I usually have all the Wisp essences). I'm just about to go confront Gereon in redcliff castle.

Same for me. I'm almost 100% certain that if I was planning on doing Necromancer, I'd never see a single skull, much less 3 of them already, and I haven't even been to Redcliffe yet! But since I've neither heard of nor seen any Venatori, I have no tomes for Rift Mage atm.

Yeah, that would be really cool. I actually hoped we would get to see the river melt in the Emprise, or having a sandstorm in the Hissing Wastes. (alone the name of the area screams SANDSTORM!) Oh! You know what would've been cool? Seeing the Fallow Mire by daylight.
Necromancer is cool! I loved that spec with my Adaar. And yeah, it's sad there's no City Elf origin this time, that would've been interesting.

I... just don't know what to do. My character seems to be underleveled for everything there is to do in DAO.
I just left Lothering, and my team got overwhelmed in all locations available. I'm level 6 right now.
If you don't feel like jumping in with Broken Circle or Redcliffe, why not wander around the Brecillian Forest or hang out doing job board stuff in Denerim for a bit. Ser Laundry (something like that) can be calmed down without a duel to the death, or if you like, the whole party can back you up. Also, if you're up to it, I think you can start The Golem of Honnleath. That will add Shale, if Al isn't your cup of tea. That bounty hunter, Imrek?, is probably too tough right out of Lothering, but just about everywhere but Orzammar is doable.
@Melbella - Tannith is gorgeous. I love the way you got her Vallaslin to match her eyes.

I generally never use the masterwork materials that just boost stats, as I prefer to use the Fade Touched ones, but then I thought: What If for fun I make a dragonslayer bow for Sera? I wasted some Dragon Bone but hey... With the DLC there's more Tier 4 crafting materials to be had later... The idea is maximum base damage plus huge critical chance plus Superb Dragon-Slaying Rune plus Thousand Cuts equals MAYHEM!
So I made it...
Love the name, except, you know, all the high dragons are mommies ...
Which mat did you use? The one that rolls 100%? I tried a 40% mat and reloaded every time it didn't pay off, but they must have coded in a detection for that trick. I tried 10 times before I gave up.

Definitely different and definitely awesome. I don't know about better. Night time is really like wandering around in a dream world. It's a little like those summer nights staying up late chasing fireflies.

Thanks! I'm trying to decide if I want to tweak her appearance a little bit, but usually I find the result afterwards is worse than what I started with.
On this Episode of Dragon Age Inquisition...running around the Hinterlands.
Its amazing, looking at the map of the Hinterlands at the beginning of the game. My last memory of it was a full land scape filled with...well since I did most of the quests only two quests. But nice and full. Now its a map full of exclamation points, rifts, and unclaimed camps. And that was the primary focus of today's play through, but kept on running around finding those exclamation points and then other quests...also sides of mountains and falling off sides of mountains. So I think I only found...one camp.
But did bump into Mother Giselle, and running into plenty of Templars.
I think I am going to miss Kara. Rogues were just so manueverable and adaptable to the situation. From Stealth, to evade, to just running around, granted roges were not really close support warriors...but they could be. And mark of death, despite the problems that I was having with it at the end. I know Ben will be a beast with the Knight Enchanter and everything, but that is a long way to coming, and well I still think that will not be as....durable and adaptable.

During my recent DAO playthrough, I did the ostagar, soldier's peak and stone prisoner dlc's before anything else. After that, I do the circle quest. When doing that quest I hold off leveling up my character until I've collected all the attributes in the fade
I play it just about the same, Mike. I like to wait and return to Ostagar after the Circle Tower though. That way I can bring Wynne, for the symmetry of it Sometimes I'll wait on Ostagar until after I've completed one of the other main plots first... but always Soldier's Peak and Stone Prisoner and the Circle Tower first, yep.
Still too early here. Maybe after I get back from the grocery store.
Had lots of fun playing in the Frostback Basin, but I swear, this time, I'm really going to finish the Hissing Wastes, flies and all. I think it's the sound that drives me up a wall. I have headphones, not speakers, and without sound, the game seems so barren, but I'm going nuts looking for stuff whizzing around my desk. Here's one from yesterday, taking on HR, and winning.
I don't ride much, but that bridge to dragon country is too long.

What Pride Had Wrought: Also known as 'That Opening Scene With The Amazing Music Where Josie, Leliana and Cullen All Look Like Badasses'. That title was just too long for the quest log. Really though, I love the shot of Josie writing her letters to different contacts, then Leliana with the ravens flying out behind her (just as the music steps up), finishing with Cullen striding along the wall, watching the Inquisition forces march through. So good. For the first time ever, I saw Briala's face:
Spoiler
Definitely looks better in her 'armour' and mask-free!
Explored the area more fully, discovering Leliana and Cullen. I searched for Cullen everywhere... never realised before that he's with the soldiers in front of the temple. Do any other familiar faces show up in this quest?
Spoiler
The adventure begins!
Whenever Dorian casts 'blizzard', everyone's hair turns white... except Blackwall's beard. I wonder if this is what happened to Fenris?
Rare Morrigan smiles (she looks lovely in this conversation!).
Think they'll still be tasty after a few hundred... thousand...years?
Lavellan got a real shock to the system when he met Abelas. Not the only one. Dorian was speechless to learn that his people are vultures, not... eagles (?). They picked the bones clean, but didn't make the kill. Lavellan was just annoyed at how scornfully Abelas said "You are not my people." The Dalish have been following traditions as best they can for years. Perhaps creaky ol' Abelas could have come out of hiding and guided them? Better than guarding a giant puddle for eternity.
Despite that, Lavellan allied with the Sentinels and received a friendly guide. She said "Mythal'enaste", which apparently he can't translate without Morrigan. This quest is a real double-edged sword as a Lavellan. On the one hand, you do get more content and recognition of your race, but it goes hand in hand with ignoring his race. Lavellan asks Morrigan who Falon'Din is... and then tells her about how Falon'Din was honoured in his clan. Anywho, I ended up taking screens of all the weird artwork and statues out of curiosity.
They went on to fight Samson.
Spoiler
Come at me, bro?
I never noticed this before, usually because Samson falls off the cliff before the fight ends...
But the guy's friggin' huge! Is he trying to turn into a behemoth?
Morrigan photo-bomb!
A heated fight broke out at the Well. Abelas decided to bail on a bad situation, but Dorian encouraged him to go out and teach people. Lavellan is lucky to have someone like him. If he wasn't so distracted by Morrigan's intentions towards the Well, Lavellan would be saying it too. Ah, this scene always makes me wish Merrill were here. I'd love to see her reactions to the Sentinels and the Well. Anyway, Lavellan asked for everyone's opinion, and then completely disregarded their advice and went in the Well anyway. Morrigan was stood on the sidelines, glaring at him. If looks could perform blood magic sacrifices...
Spoiler
Can I have Abelas' armour? Pretty please? Dorian needs Lavellan to wear it for um... academic purposes.
Sipping ancient stagnant water? Tasty!
So, are these wisps talking to him? Souls? Or just some form of Fade-madness?
Fortunately, he heard a voice calling him. It sounded like "If you die, I'll kill you!" Pretty sure it involved angry moustache twitching. I hope you didn't drink all that water.
On one side is Dorian, incredibly worried. On the other side is Morrigan, plotting his untimely demise. The evil eye.
Luckily, the party made it back to Skyhold in the nick of time! That scene also makes more sense if Inky drinks from the Well, since they're always the one who's glowing blue. Forgive me Morrigan, but you'll be thankful later.
Back at Skyhold, Vivienne won't talk to me. Leliana was pushed towards Divinity. Sera pulled a bow on Lavellan, and things only got worse from there (RIP friendship). Dorian said that he'd probably return to Tevinter. Lavellan offered to go too, but was turned down. So he resorted to basically saying "Please don't leave me." Dorian seemed touched, but wouldn't answer definitively. Lavellan already lost his whole clan... he doesn't want Dorian to leave him too. Spirit-Cole got a bit weird during his final conversation... and then everything else did too:
Spoiler
Fortunately it was back to normal for a night in with friends. "Ooh, shiny!" Don't eat it, Cole! It's not chocolate money!
Sadly there was no Cass for the card game, because I somehow missed her Guilty Pleasures quest.

I do like the night time effect, but the day time of the Frostback Basin was short-lived. I miss it a lot. I thought the scenery was more beautiful, and I hate Hakkon's arena ruining the scenery of the water. That place should have been destroyed after defeating Hakkon.
He steps through the doorway into a crowded, noisy tavern. Filled with people and noise, warmth and welcome, and a pretty lady singing a song about grey wardens. He smiled and took a deep breath, and was headed for the bar when i glint caught his eye. A plaque on the wall, shining in the firelight. He stepped up to read it and saw...
The Herald's Rest
A place for all in service here To rest, recoup and persevere. Though weighs the heart, remember best, Your saving grace, the Herald's Rest. We beat the Beast, by strength and will, The Herald's heart, inspires still. We're brothers all, and sisters too, So make your mark and drink to you!
Below the verse are countless notches scratched into the metal; most faded, but some are still fresh. he smiles again to himself, and brushes his fingers across the letters before moving further inside. he is somewhat startled to see a lone man sitting at the bar, and everyone else in the place seemed to be giving him a wide berth. His wide shoulders were hunched and when the pretty minstrel began a song that everyone in Thedas knew, called "Once We Were," He looked on as the man flinched as though absorbing a blow. He took a long drink and slammed the empty mug down on the bar, signaling for a refill. The bartender frowned but said nothing as he poured.
Realization dawned and the newcomer began to make his way through the crowd and towards the man who was his reason for being here, in a sense. Sticking to that story when anyone asked had gotten him through the gates of Skyhold anyway. Suddenly he heard, "I wouldn't go over there if I were you..."
He turned and saw a dwarf sitting relaxed at a table in a corner, positioned so he could keep an eye on the man at the bar. A pretty young woman was sitting next to him and smiling as though he'd just said something charming. he was wearing a fancy red embroidered tunic, open to the belly, and copious tufts of thick hair covered the man's chest. Sitting on the chair next to him was the most amazing crossbow the man had ever seen. It looked more like a siege engine than a bow! he said, "That's a nice crossbow you have there." and was a bit surprised to see the dwarf only sigh and look wistfully over at the bar.
"That's the first thing he said to me, too. Come over here and sit down."
As he approached the table, the woman rose, picked up her serving tray and left them alone, a giggle on her lips and a breathless, "Don't you worry, Mister Tethras. I'll not stay away long."
"You're really him, aren't you? You accompanied-"
"Shh, kid. Not so loud," The dwarf interrupted with a glance to the bar. "Just... don't say his name. Not tonight."
"So that is him! he's the reason I'm here, you know! I-"
The dwarf grimaced, "Will you keep it down? He's the reason we're all here."
"Of course, of course, but I meant..."
"Sure, kid. Sit down. You can buy the next round and tell me what you meant. Leave him alone. What's your name, anyway?"
He sat down, grinning like a fool while Varric signalled for drinks. "My name isn't important. It's what I make that's important."
"Really. And what is it you make?"
" Well... it's a simple utensil, really." He was warming up to his pitch now, but kept his voice lowered, heeding Varric's warning. "I was hoping to impress him with it, then maybe I could get an endorsement, and-"
"Sure. I get it," Varric chuckled. "You want to cash in on his fame. You and countless others. This utensil better be a good one, kid."
"Oh it is! It's a combination spoon and fork. I call it a-"
Varric roared laughter drawing glances from almost everyone. Only the man at the bar didn't turn to look, but only hunched his shoulders. "I'm going to stop you right there, kid. That's the craziest idea I've ever heard. Even crazier than Bianca here. And let me give you a piece of advice. If you approached him with that, he'd have Bull throw you off the battlements. Trust me."
Crestfallen, the took a long drink of his ale and glanced over at the bar again. "Do you think I could at least meet him? I've come an awfully long way."
"I dont think so, kid. Not tonight anyway."
"What's so special about tonight? Why is everyone leaving him alone?"
"It's two years ago tonight that she was crowned the new Divine. He's gotten a lot better about it, but-"
"You mean The Divine? Victoria?"
The minstrel's song halted with a gasp and all sound in the Tavern stopped, followed quickly by all eyes turning to the bar. Only one person dared approach the bar, maybe because no one could have stopped him anyway. Footsteps so heavy they shook the beams, and a loud roar, "Which one of you a**holes said that? Listen boss, it's alright-"
The man with the wide shoulders stood up and faced the big qun'ari. He simply shook his head and walked out the tavern, a scowl on his face and a haunted look in his eyes. The qun'ari, who could only be the Iron Bull, clenched his fists and started towards the dwarf's table, ready to snap someone in half.
Varric raised his hand up and shook his head. "Leave him alone, Bull. He's new here. He doesn't know any better."
Bull took a deep breath, sat down, and bellowed for more ale. He looked coolly at the newcomer for a moment. "Yeah," he snorted. "Not worth it." [
"Look, i'm sorry! I had no idea! I-"
"forget it, kid. He wasn't always like this, you know."
"No sh*t, Tethras. He used to be much worse. Why don't you tell him about the Frostback Basin?"
"The Basin? You big ass. I wasn't even there, and you just want to hear about your own glory, not his!"
"Yeah, well. When a story is good, it's good. Go on, tell it."
"All right. Listen up kid. The days after the defeat of corypheus were heady days for all of us. It seemed all of Thedas was basking in the glory of the inquisition's accomplishment. The only pair who didn't seem entirely happy were the ones most responsible for our celebrations; The Inquisitor, and Divine Justinia's Right Hand.

Harold and Cassie in happier times
"It wasn't long before we found out why they weren't happy. It seemed she'd been elected to be the new Divine, and was leaving Skyhold in a matter of days to begin knitting together the tattered rags of the Chantry. Her departure broke Harold. I don't know any other way to say it, but he wasa broken man. He took to wandering all over, alone, for days and weeks at a time. When he returned he would binge-drink for days. Ruffles... that is, Ambassador montilyet was starting to find it difficult to make excuses for him with the visiting nobles and dignitaries.
"None of us knew what to do. He refused all help, pushing away everyone who cared. All we could do was hope he'd snap out of it. in the meantime, life in the Inquisition continued. And one day a letter arrived...."
[i]To Ambassador Josephine Montilyet,
Thank you so much for your earlier correspondence. I confess it's been difficult to get those in Orlais to take this discovery seriously in light of recent events, but I am positive that scouting the Frostback Basin will yield historic discoveries to both the academic field and the Inqusition. As a staunch supporter, i am honored to be working in such great company on this historic occasion.
Yours, most sincerely,
Professor Bram Kenric
University of Orlais
"Well, sh*t," Varric continued, taking a long pull from his mug. "It seemed our good ambassador had come up with a plan to get the Inquisitor off his self-pitying ass and doing something important again. And it worked! here's what happened..."
----
I've decided to put aside the magequisition, for a brief time only, and play through the Jaws of Hakkon DLC again. mainly due to all the amazing screenies people have been posting here lately. I've only played it once and I'm looking forward to it. I've gone back to my second Inquisitor for this one. Some of you may remember Harold "the Herald" Trevelyan. He's a Tempest archer, and he was in love Cassandra, who became the new Divine and broke his heart. Awwww. I took Harold into the Black Emporium and changed his appearance a little bit. He's still Harold, but different.
Spoiler
I've crafted him some all new gear and he's ready for the adventure. Been awhile since I played a ranged character (except in MP), so i hope it doesn't take long to come back to me. The Frostback Basin is an unforgiving place, so I've heard
I know that Cassie is still available for the adventure if I want her to be, but I'm role-playing this so that that she's not. It's post-Corypheus, so Solas is gone. In Harold's game, I booted both Sera and Cole out of the Inquisition, figuring they were redundant since I was playing a rogue. Don't worry, I regretted it but it doesn mean that Harold's adventuring companion choices are somewhat limited. Good thing I didn't banish the grey wardens, too I've chosen Blackwall, Bull, and Dorian to accompany Harold on this one, which is why Varric told Bull he wasn't even there.
So, without further ado, here we go...
---
Spoiler
A still broken-hearted Harold and company arrive in the Basin, to be greeted by Scout Harding...
She introduced us to professor Kenric, who told us about the First Inquisitor, Ameridan.
Harold had to admit it was good to be doing something significant again, and so agreed to find out what he could.
But first, catching up with Harding, who warned us of Avvar, admitted she's afraid of heights, confessed a strange idea for siege ammunition, and found an advocate for her Avvar/dwarf archer idea, in Iron Bull. Sigh, I've missed Harding
Then it was down to the business of closing our first rift. Despair demons and Terrors and nothing too tough, though Dorian might disagree. Gotta get that man some guard-producing gear, heh.
Unfortunately that's all I have time for before work today. I'll try and get some better screenies, and more of them next time, when the adventures of heart-broken Harold continue.

That plaque has a pretty far interaction range. You can read it even if you are standing next to the woman who sings. I think she's a bard, but I don't know.
