Know what you mean about updates crashing the system. I think this is the first time mine didn't crash repeatedly.
If the game crashes a lot for me, I try resetting the computer. If that doesn't work, I turn it off and back on, and that usually helps a lot. Worse comes to worse, do something else for a while and come back to it. Leave the thing (your system, not the game) on and let it go through all it's processes. You can't prevent updates, and you really can't prevent crashes, but you can slow it down to give your system time to catch up. And try to remember to quicksave before you jump on the map, just in case. Sometimes the autosave gets corrupted when the system's already overloaded.
It's really a system stretcher, and anything you can do to make the load on your processor less will make more space and give more startup time for the game to load properly and do its thing. Data-rich info demands are the worst, such as graphically intense stuff (cutscenes and battles), and, in your case, area transitions. The war room is probably going to give you problems too, and if you're on the verge of a main plot quest, that as well. My guess is that as things start to fill up in memory, it takes longer to retrieve new data, and like every process, there's a time limit. At the end, the computer displays whatever is ready, and sometimes it's not enough to support the system running.
It seems to have worked for me (this time....)
Descent looks so awesome. I hope I get a chance to play it soon. I was really only gone a couple days - I had no idea I'd miss such news.
