I seem to have picked up a bug, in more ways than one.  Aside from my having an annoying head cold, the game now lost the last mission for investigating Hunter Fell, and, worse luck, Dorians last resort of good men quest (not sure about the name, but the one with his father) didn't fire.  I'm going to try the workaround, leaving the tavern and coming back while controling someone else.  I'm glad I'm not romancing him now.

On a more upbeat note, I was wondering when I did the Blackwall quest where you find the warden commander badge if the skeleton near where you find it might be the original Blackwall's.  Here's the warden camp near it and the skeleton.

It's gotta be, the way the skeleton is propped up with its sword.

Pretty sure it's supposed to be the real Blackwall, but I kinda wonder why Thom didn't say something like "I... uh... don't know who this guy is, but he deserves a decent funeral. Let's bring him back to Skyhold and burn him properly."

In reality, it's been 3 or more years since the ambush. In a desert climate, the remains would have been identifiable as human after 3 years, but exposed like that on a hillside in a temperate zone forest? Not a chance. There would be nothing left but a jawbone.

In all honesty I'm amazed at the fact that that skeleton is still in one piece.  If this were the really real world those bones would have long since been scattered by dogs and wolves and bears and carrion birds.

Decomposition seems to be really special in Thedas, if DAI is any indication. Things just vanish in a puff of sparkles.

I don't think so. I mean, if you romance Blackwall you go to the place where ambush happened. I believe if we were to find real Blackwall's corpse, it would be there. It's not that place.

Magdalena's talking about the skeleton you encounter during Explanations, a romance-specific quest, so that would have been the spot the ambush happened. There is a skeleton there, and I've wondered the same thing several times. You pick up the badge, one of you remarks that it's the Warden Constable's badge, and then you say "You mean your badge." He says something like "Yes, my badge. I shouldn't have let it get away from me."

Which makes some sense. Blackwall recruited Rainier three years before the Conclave in a Ferelden tavern, and they went to a darkspawn-rich area to find darkspawn blood for his Joining ritual. The Storm Coast is riddled with darkspawn warrens, so that would have been a good place to go to find some.

Or am I misunderstanding you?

No, no. You didn't. I think.

I just wanted to say that I don't understand why this would be there. It just never occured to me that there's that possibility. That Thom didn't burn/bury real Blackwall.

And if he did leave it there... shouldn't real Blackwall's body be among skeleton pile that we see right next to the place where we found badge? Among enemies he took down?

Sorry if I sound confusing. I was just following my train of thoughts when I was typing my previous post (and this one as well).

I did a ragequit. For the first time ever in a game. Playing a dual wielding rogue on Nightmare difficulty in the apostates hideout in Witchwood, the Hinterlands. The floor was littered with magical traps and every time they went off, ALL my party members died. I think I'll just go in with 2 archers and 2 mages so I can do damage from a distance.

Ha! This actually took me like three attempts with my DW Inquis. Also the leader Mage guy just wouldn't stop using Fade Cloak. Annooooyiiing.

Magic, yo (even for non-magical peeps!).

Also, I think if one is going to go, going in a puff of sparkles would be awesome.

Don't worry. They're just reused assets. As far as I'm concern, everyone human has a body of a super model. Giselle must have a body of a 20 year old under all of those sheets. :)

Make sure your mages have Dispel active. They can get rid of at least some of the glyphs that way.

Aravas got the ball rolling with Cullen. In the end, I opted for the mage dialogue to start with since she sounded just as hesitant and flustered as he did when she spoke.  Went to Val Royeaux with Josie only to discover assassins were after her. Took the Leliana short cut this time since I expect Tal-eb'saam to do things as Josie would prefer. Took Dorian to meet with his dear ol' dad and convinced him to stay and chat for a while. Then headed back to the Plains for Solas' quest but got distracted by fade rifts and hordes of undead. Surprise, surprise. Also, got lost in the ****** ramparts. <_<

The ramparts can suck it.  Nay... the entire Exalted Plains can suck it. Took Leah in there for some Venatori tomes and it sucked the last ounce of my will to game.  And after all that, I'm not sure I even like Rift Mage.  Its like they took the all the fun out of DA2's Force Mage tree and made it unfun.

Dispel is probably the number one spell a mage should have before any other. There have been a couple of times that I, playing as  a mage, and having another mage in the group, can  take care of a rift without fighting any demons. Except for the 1st wave

The thing with the comet storm is kinda OK, but yeah, apart from that, the Rift Mage specialization is definitely a pale shadow of the once-mighty Force Mage. No, it's the pale shadow of the specially-miniaturized Force Mage. The extra-nerfed version. (sigh)

My last two mage Hawkes have been force mages. Knock 'em all down with Fist of the Maker. Swirl 'em all around with Pull of the Abyss. Ah, good times. Coupled with entropy spells, my last Hawke could take out mobs all by herself.

Hear, hear. The Exalted Plains ought to be renamed The Xanax Plains. Because, you know, you have to take a fistful before venturing into it.

The ambient audio in the Exalted Plains is partially to blame, I think. I don't know if it's supposed to be the music of the spheres or the echoes of forgotten souls whispering pleas for justice, but it's grating, like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Believe it or not, I actually like the Exalted Plains because everything about them is so atmospheric. The ambient audio stresses you out. The war-blasted landscape is a portrait of futility and senseless destruction. Demons don't drop out of rifts there, they just amble through the countryside like some Fade gang war. The Freemen of the Dales are supposed to be the bad guys (and they are), but they're getting torn up by demons, too, mauled by the demons they unwittingly unleashed on the place.

I am not saying that I enjoy wandering around the Exalted Plains! It's a war zone! But it looks, sounds, and feels like what it's supposed to be, so the level artists did a great job with it.

^^ Agree with the war-torn feel of the place. And since Solas ran off with his Token of the Packmaster, my party is also having to deal with stray wolf packs who get tired of chasing halla.

This is my only problem with Exalted Plains. I get headache if I stay there for too long. Damn buzzing. That's why I always find clearing it a pain. Literally.

If not for that... It would be zone with pretty specific atmosphere, one that I definitely would enjoy.

I fixed it for you. ;)

Although the lighting has something to do with it too, I suppose. It's so glaring, which you don't expect in a land filled with death and destruction.
