Question: I have Grizzly End turned on and have so far encountered 2 great bears in Emerald Graves. How do I know if they are the promoted kind or not? Will it be really obvious ('cause so far, they seemed like normal great bears) or are they all promoted by default but still appear to be the same?
What Did You Do Today (in the DA 'verse) ? .... oops ;)

All bears are promoted with Grizzly End turned on. As far as I can tell, the difference is subtle. They don't do more damage, but they seem to have bigger health bars. Basically, it's a cheap way to increase your odds of getting rewards, since they don't seem much harder than regular bears. Of course, I do Emerald Graves late (Even Ground means I'm usually level 22 by that point) and I will have cleared up to the Tower Camp in Emprise du Lion, so I've got T3 gear with T3 mats. It makes a difference.

Hmm, maybe that's why they don't seem too bad just yet. I'm only level 15 and so are they. I'm kind of doing things a bit randomly this time since I don't need to worry about being over-leveled wherever I go. It's kind of nice, actually. I'm using both Walk Softly and Even Ground, plus the bear one. I got Trial of the Lovers achievement so I don't have to worry about double disapproval anymore. Just have to turn on the ones for Suledin Keep and Hivernal when I get to Emprise. And only 1 more level until I can go kill Frosty! Not being able to finish Hinterlands yet is driving me nuts.

Yeah, I was playing with Even Ground and Walk softly on up until about level 25, at which point I was getting spanked too badly to keep it up. The great bears weren't too bad, and the Red Templars and Freeman in the Graves were cake, but the demons on the far side of Argon's Lodge were too much for me. I had a little trouble with Walk Softly in the Exalted Plains because it was hard to take down promoted barriers (where, out of desperation, I discovered that after your mage targets a barrier, clicking "attack my target" will make the rest of the party attack it and do damage), but promoted desire demons with endlessly-refreshing barriers and pride demons with double the usual guard capable of one-shotting the rogues...
Rogues seem to be the primary damage dealers despite the low DPS of bows relative to other weapons, because every time the rogues died, I couldn't seem to damage the enemies enough to kill them before they killed me.

I have noticed that in regular barriers w/o the trials on you can use any old staff to put them out of business - despite the fact that it says you need one of the opposite type to do so. With promoted ones, you really do need to have one that does opposite damage to take them out. In the Western Approach, the one at the end of the Chantry trail was an electricity barrier that was promoted, and both Dorian and Leah had electricity staves. Oops. Nothing I did took it out. So I had to leave an equip a crap fire staff and stuck a spirit rune on it(and it was like, complete crap). Took it out super quick.
Congrats on finishing your NM run. That's the best feeling, right? I don't think Descent on NM is too bad. Do JoH first to get the aegis of the rift though (not saying you have to complete it, but get the aegis first). Those lyrium shooters do a number on you in NM - one shot and done.

Thanks for the advice about the lyrium shooters! I've been wondering how the DLC change with increasing difficulty. They already scale with level, so it would make sense if there was some other way they boost the challenge.

I noticed a lot of barriers with the Emissaries among the darkspawn that would require two hits. So A couple of mages and/or Cass with Spell Purge help there. The battle for the thaig was pretty intense in terms of making me crabby and/or party death. You have the trials on, yes? So many ogres. Ugh!

Yeah, those uber-powered barriers are a pain in the youknowwhat. I decided to go in the back way this time at Griffon Wing Keep (through the well) and the stupid barrier protecting the entrance was a promoted one that took me forever to get through. I think it was part KE because sometimes the barrier would increase when I hit it.
It probably took me as much time to kill all the goons as it did to break the barrier. Then I had to destroy the front door anyway to get the sad splinter. ![]()

Finished up Emerald Graves (except for promoted great bears) and Hinterlands. Reached level 16 so was able to go after Frosty for the achievement. Only 4 more to go. I should get them all this time except for reaching Skyhold at level 5 or sooner. That one may take me a while since I have a hard time not doing stuff. Maybe next game.
I am debating whether to do the war table op, Reparations for Redcliffe. Considering what a ****** Teagan turns into in Trespasser, I don't really want to help him out, especially when I don't feel what happened with the mages before they allied/were conscripted should be the responsibility of the Inquisition. The crown let them stay there.....let Alistair and Anora pay for the damages. It's the least they could do since they apparently completely ignored Crestwood on their way back to Denerim. Nevermind it's on the way. ![]()

I found the most annoying fight in Descent was the final fight with the Sha-Brytol right before you get to the final area of the DLC. They just keep coming, and coming, and coming...you get the picture.
With all the gold they drop though you get rich fast.

Sha-Brytol kind of sounds like the name of some weird shaving cream from 1953. Just me??

Storm Coast is cleared, including Bull's mission (saved the Chargers again...duh) and starting Descent. Was all ready for the game to crash during the "examine the corpses" cut scene since I have mods installed but, much to my surprise, it didn't!
I then barriered my way to the two tricky gears and am now ready to take the Heidrun Thaig lift down to the next level. But, that's for tomorrow. I'm not sure how far I'll get since I only just leveled to 17 (everyone else is still 16). I'm playing on normal but I'm not sure I can do enough damage yet to survive the waves of darkspawn at the end of this level. I might have to come back later, or at least craft way better gear. I've been lazy and other than crafting Aravas some Keeper armor, I haven't made hardly anything. I've just been using stuff I find.

Talisia swiftly arrived in Skyhold after surviving Haven's destruction and humbly accepted her new title as Inquisitor. She also shared her first kiss with Solas.
Currently, she, Dorian, Cassandra and Solas are in Crestwood to meet up with Hawke and Warden Alistair. But those handsome boys had to wait a bit. The team dealt with the underwater fade rift and annexed Caer Bronch from those measly highwaymen. Plus make sure Crestwood is completely safe.
I decided to change things up in this run. Instead of pushing through the main story as usual, I'm clearing each area first before the story.

~A page ripped from the Inquisitor’s log book, torn in half, and then wadded tightly is found by an elven servant on the floor on the Inquisitor’s quarters. No one suspected the girl could read when she was hired, but she can, and does.~
I went to the Commander and asked him if we could talk privately. He refused me! Refused ME! He said that he'd heard rumors that I was involved with another and “wouldn’t want anyone to get the wrong impression.” He meant that he wouldn’t want anyone, himself included, to think the Inquisitor is a ****.
~A hole marks the end of the entry – a wound bleeding ink where the quill has been stabbed through the parchment. The servant girl glances to the Inquisitor’s bed, which has not been occupied the previous night.
Later, in the kitchen, the elven girl hears rumors of the clash and clatter, shouts of delight, throaty moans and cries of ecstasy that emanated from the barn where Warden Blackwall stays. The heat of the hearth flushes cheeks of merry company as gossip passes between them, and they titter and jape that at least there isn't anything to break in the barn, though the Inquisitor and the Warden likely spooked the horses something terrible. A scowling Commander intrudes upon the servants' chatter and forces his order for extra barracks rations through the rumors, sending the elven girl her companions scurrying to duties.~

Talk about adding insult to injury. I had to shut off the game to attend to cooking, having just completed Fortress Squatters, and returned to find the bandits had respawned, right on top of me. Then, leaping shot sent me right off the cliff. Very surreal.

Aravas update:
I finished Descent at level 18 (others still 17). I crafted the team way better armor so they would survive the darkspawn horde and not insta-die against the bolters. Collected a whole bunch of awesome loot and whaddaya know? It was all for characters level 18 and over so only Aravas could use any of it right away. Boo. My team this time was Bull, Varric, and Solas. Other than a couple of lines while riding the initial lift, Solas was very quiet the whole time. Kinda disappointing, really, but I guess he couldn't comment too much without revealing himself. He couldn't have seen any of it in the fade since dwarves don't dream. Which makes me wonder....how did he see that one dwarf he talks about???
Cleared the rest of the Western Approach, including the dragon. Made Servis an agent since he's really just an opportunist, not an evil nutcase llke Erimond. I get a kick out of the letter you find at the fort where he's applying for work elsewhere, "as far as possible from the Inquisition." Sorry, bud, now you get to work for the Inquisition. ![]()
I messed up my Trial of Temperance. I read the description wrong and thought you just had to have Rest Easy on while doing the "capture the keep" mission. But no, you need to have it on from entering Emprise until you capture the keep. Oops.
Oh well, another one for next game. Or if I get bored and just want to do it for kicks later on. I definitely didn't want to redo it right after doing it the first time.
Back at Skyhold, I bought a bunch of influence after getting the second discount perk, and also stopped by Val Royeaux for the nug box.
Next up will be Cradle of Sulevin and possibly the second half of Emprise. I'm putting off HLTA again, but at least I won't be absurdly over-leveled this time. Also need to give Cullen all the scoop we found on Samson at the quarry.

I decided to replace my Male Warrior Trev with a male Mage Lavellen. I like mages, alright? Mages are the best class to play in DAI!
There is nothing wrong with maging it up. This is sadly, why I've never really run with a dwarf. I mean, I can play as a rogue or a warrior and occasionally play as a dagger rogue but by and large I play as a mage. I guess I want the option to be a mage for all races. I mean, it's one thing to be pocket sized, the least you can do is be able to zap someone with lightning for making short jokes....

Excellent. Using leaping shot would be the best way to get yourself killed That has happened to me several times. Not in the lake, but in other areas. I used leaping shot one time where it sent me back far enough from the dragon that I had to start over. Its useful, just have to be careful where to use leaping shot.
