Good pics! I really need to do another playthrough of Origins, the 360 broke down though so here's hoping it'll eventually be backwards compatible with Xbox One. That or maybe I get a good gaming PC in the future and play it on that.

Some time ago, I made a post regarding my plans on doing a "self-insert" play through. I have never done one before (in any rpg), and decided I would try a bit of an experiment. Here is the original post, with some of the rules I intended to abide by, to add a smidge to realism....in a fantasy video game.

Like Sporkfu, I am going to start a new play through soon. It is an experiment, so bear with me.

This past weekend, I received my birthday presents from my husband, early - new hardware to rebuild my decaying PC. YAY! (To finally be able to use DAI Cinematic Tools will be my new crack....can't do that with my current system). Once I have rebuilt my PC, I am going to start my very first self-insert play through.

I have never done a true self-insert. I have always had some PC's that had a few traits, or a couple of tastes/preferences, that were similar to me, but that was about it. So this will be a new experience.

I should note though, I will make one concession. Apparently I live too close to a power plant or was tested on by aliens, because my self-insert will be an Elf. I chose this for two reasons: one, the background has some odd similarities to my family and youth. And two, I am most attracted (LI-wise) to Solas. It is meta-gamey I know, but the reason for the metagaming has a lot to do with the specifics I am setting up for this "experiment".

Because I want this self-insert to feel "authentically me" - so to speak - I have set up a number of rules. The criteria for this play through is quite detailed. Here are a list of some of the "rules", and feel free to comment (if anyone is bored and wishes to add thoughts/ideas/whatnot).

1) Age/Appearance/Race I am actually turning 46 in two weeks, and I want to stay within the game's age parameters (i.e. 20-40yrs old). So I considered an age closer to my age, where I was the most fit (the Inquisitor after all, is meant to do battle from time to time  ). I have chosen my 38 year old self. I was heavily into long distance cycling at the time, and 38 is near the top end of the game age range. I have pictures of myself from that age, that I will base my in-game appearance, and have mentioned my choice (and reasons) on Race, up above.

2) Class - I have done a small amount of fencing in my youth, and some archery. Have no experience in large weapons or shields, nor twirling two long daggers. In the end, it made the most sense to go with Archery.

3) Specialization - Being sneaky or dousing myself in chemicals, seems highly unlikely. I did have a time, where I was fond of "tinkering", so I will choose Artificer (which I am actually happy about, since I have yet to play that specialization :) ).

4) Difficulty - This was a tough one. Realistically, Nightmare makes the most sense. The problem is, I have never played nightmare. If I have to reload for fights too often, I suspect I will eventually get too frustrated to continue. LOL! The compromise, I believe, will be Hard Difficulty. This will still make me work harder than I do on my Normal play throughs (which is what I usually play), but won't risk the potential "rage-quit", on Nightmare.

5) Limitations - These are both combat and rping related. I'll start with a few ideas for combat

- No Leaping Shot (have never been able to do a backflip...ever.)
- No Stealth (since it boarders on magicky. I may change my mind, if I can restrict use to when enemies are not engaged - like before combat begins, and I want to set traps at a planned choke point).
- No Hook and Tackle (gymnastic stuff again, soooooo no.)
- No Caltrops (because those damn things look like they should always give FF even if FF is not enabled).
- No Fallback Plan (mostly because I really don't get how that would work in real world conditions. LOL!)
- Limits for potions. Haven't made final thoughts on that yet....subject to change. ;)

As for limits on rping, those won't be hard and fast rules so much, but more of a guideline. If I really don't think I would personally do something (like a certain side quest, or take a certain action), I won't do it. Some exceptions may happen, if I can determine a logical reason behind doing it.

**Exceptions** I will allow for Fade Touched items in crafting (and yes, crafting will be allowed). Magic that comes from mages or magic touched items, I am fine with. I just can't do anything that is magicky myself. Passives are also allowed (or at least most of them), for the ability points. But I won't necessarily be taking advantage of what they are actually meant to do. Unless by accident.

I am forgetting a few other things that I have written out (my build set up, is on another computer), but this is a general idea. It is still a fantastical setting (Thedas, that is), so I am not treating this as a true life simulation. That should go without saying. But, I just want to imagine how I might do, in a fantastical situation such as this.

tl:dr
I understand...HA!

Long and short, created my new self-insert earlier this week. I am using the following mods:
Settrah's brows
Elf bob
Custom Body Mod (athletic/larger chest)

Ended up turning on a number of Trials as well, and that turned out to be a good plan. Difficulty feels genuine, especially with my limitations. I am just about to head to Redcliffe, so not a lot of screenshots....yet. ;)

*NOTE*
I tried for multiple days, with a couple of different mods, before settling for this version of "me". It doesn't look exactly like me, but it is the closest I could get. Even attempted it as a human (in case working with the elf pre-sets was hemming me in a tad), but nup! Apparently that was worse. Go figure. LOL! The profile is nearly spot on though. And from the front, the shape of the face, brows (though not entirely satisfied with the angle), and the nose are damn close. The eyes and lips, are what I had the most difficult time with. Again, except for profile.

Erica2_zpsczcpzyms.jpg

Erica1_zpstenzc5wo.jpg

And so it begins....
Erica3_zpsmvdymekq.jpg

Just give Solas an "I'm with stupid" shirt, in that picture. Even though I am metagaming some aspects (to fit my person and background), I still am choosing Solas as the LI, since he is my type - personality wise. (minus the god complex and potential genocide.)

Cheers!

Thanks. :) I played my last DAO game before Inquisition came out, then finished up her story in Awakening + WH a few months ago. I figured it was about time for another run with an origin (elf mage) I never completed the game with before. The hardest part is getting used to the controls again. Also, the ability bar really puts the one in DAI to shame. Amazing how a mage can have access to all her spells at once. :o

One thing for certain, they wouldn't be limiting the ability bar for DA4 unless they're deaf to the overwhelming complaints about the limitations in DAI. :D

I noticed that Solas didn't say much in Descent but I guess he wouldn't want to give away how much he knew of the Titans and the dwarves. Last fight was an annoyance but I did what I've done before; take sole control of Varric. The others dropped and the guardian kept batting Varric off the edge even as I tried to make him dodge. Then I decided, why bother? The fall doesn't kill Varric, he just spawn right back again with massive injuries but he's still fighting. He ended up standing right at the edge of the platform where the guardian actually ignored him, even when the spikes came up, they didn't reach him. So I had him stay there and pew pew away until the guardian died. That's what I'm going to do with Descent boss fight in future PTs. All that dodging rolling about is extraneous and troublesome. Any range will do, should have taken Solas though. His dmg output ought to be better than Varric's. In hindsight, should have them both standing at the edge. The meleers can drop but these two can stay out of range and shoot away.

This is another example where dual weapon skills should have stayed. In Guild Wars 2, the versatile dodge and the ability to use two different weapons with different skills coming into play once they're armed, even in the middle of combat, makes the battle dynamic. DAO allowed the warrior to learn archery as a secondary skill but not DAI, stupid, I say.

In previous PT, I didn't get to judge the bear and I was wondering if it's because I didn't run out the entire dialogue options with Sunhair and never picked up the look for bear quest. I just saved the bear during exploration. Doing the whole bear dialogue this time.

A couple more interesting things I found in DAO:

This looks like a cross between one of the Mythal dragon statues and a fear demon. There's a pair of them in the final chamber with the blood mage leader.

Oh I love these two ladies, especially the older one. She makes me laugh and feel hungry at the same time.

Finished Hakkon. I'm wondering why the Inquisitor never asked Solas about his feet. He doesn't wear shoes / boots, he's wearing crafted Keeper robes btw. Finally discovered why I missed the judging of the bear, I didn't see it by the entrance in previous PT.

Banter timing is a bit off. Just as I jumped into the fight with the Hakkonite boss, Solas and Varric started talking about Wardens. arrghh, not now, you two.

Update - just finished the meeting with Flemeth. This a PT where Morrigan has no kid. The scene between her and Flemeth when she tries to attack makes me think of a miscreant venting her umpteenth tantrum with Flemeth casually slapping her down with a flick of her fingers.   There's something about KM's delivery and the interaction of these two VAs that tickled my funny bone. To provide greater contrast, the inquisitor was respectful, shrewd and needled Morrigan (not unkindly) at the end. :P  *sigh* I really want Flemeth back for DA4. It just doesn't seem like DA without her. :D

Cory is done. One really really odd aspect of the fight is ... Solas running far ahead without the party. I watched him in disbelief as he took off up the stairs. He always lags behind the party. While I did command the party to attack Cory, once he ported away, Cass and Varric stayed with the Inq. Solas ... *scratches head*  I'm not sure if this is just typical if Solas is brought along but I've done so in older PTs and I don't recall he ever do that.

Cass is Devine. I think...that's a first for me. I think it's because Viv wasn't recruited and I chose the Templars.

Just for sh!ts and giggles, I made another Assassin lady Inquisitor and started romancing Sera. For some reason, I'm not feeling the chemistry between the two. I mean.. Sera's fun and crazy to have as a friend and sister, but not more than that :/

As for my elf lady Inquisitor, Talisia, the last time I played as her, she's adventuring in the Hissing Wastes after steamrolling through the other zones. She didn't fight any dragons yet and story wise, she still has to go to Adamant and fall into the fade.

DAO Talia update

Made it to Haven after getting the run-around from not!Weylon. Went to the Chantry before checking out the creepy house/altar but the psychos still attacked. At least the cutscene was slightly different. Tricked Kolgrim into thinking she would use the dragon blood on the ashes, then didn't so got to kill him anyway. Made one sorry attempt at the dragon before running away to fight another day. :P

After giving Zevran the spiffy Antivan leather boots (really, the only reason I went to Haven this early ) then headed back to the dragon caves to harvest some drake scales for good ol' Wade. Talia got the first armor set for free but felt guilty and decided to pay the 20 sovereigns for the second set. Once they get Cailan's armor from Ostagar, then the team might be ready to face the dragon again.

On the way back to Denerim, they stopped off to cure Eamon and plan their strategy. For now, Talia will keep recruiting allies while Eamon sows the seeds of doubt about Loghain with the Fereldan nobles.

Next up: Return to Ostagar and Flemeth

Companion notes: I took Sten with me to Haven to get him to challenge Talia and increase his approval enough to trigger the next conversation. Next time at camp, she gained over 20 points with him. :D I gave Morrigan the grimoire (funny how the description actually says Morrigan might be interested in it; it's like the devs knew her approval was screwy and it might take forever before she actually asked about it) and got +12 approval. After she had time to study it, Talia managed to troll her badly enough to lose 9 of the 12 points. She won't be "killing" Flemeth, btw, but Morrigan doesn't need to know that.

Morrigan is really hard to please. I always cheat by throwing her gifts.

Decided to leave Trepasser of the female Inq for another day. Rest for 'two years'. :P  Then I went to fiddle with the Dragon Keep and made the male Inq; warrior. The only second guy; I usually don't play male protagonists if there's  a choice and will play them if the story and chars are motivating enough for me to do so.  ^_^ I might add manShep flunked it. Never made one because unfortunately, he himself is not motivating enough. :P

I've played FPS games (COD, Modern Warfare, etc) where the protagonist is inevitably male but you don't actually get to see their bodies. All you see are the weapons bobbing accordingly as you move. And for the rare few that actually showed the body (Splinter Cell, etc) the movements are fluid and efficient since they're military based games and the protagonist is a soldier.

But DAI. The animation threw me off. It's not terrible, it just makes me feel I'm trying to move a big bulky tank. As a matter of fact, I don't particularly like one aspect of the female Inq's movements either; that swaying of hips feel exaggerated to me. I hope they trim the run animation for DA4 down to something more neutral.

I finally sync collectibles in the last PT so this guy Inq is the lucky one that wouldn't be spending coin to buy schematics.

My Surana walked out the Circle and into Ostagar, where she met her current lover (Alistair). She was happy to meet him, and was happy to listen to him speak all day long, but at las, she prevaled and met the other two Grey Warden Trainees. She thought that Jory was a bit stupid to be honest, and told him so. He didn't like that very much. Davith was a good champ, whom she liked more then Jory, who also happened to be a coward. She thought of Jory as a stupid coward when it came to Darkspawn.

She decided to keep the Marbi alive, and then left on her Merry way to cure him of the Darkspawn illness. She got the flower that was needed to cure the Marbi eventually known as Lightspawn. On her way to finding the flower, she met a injuired Ostagar solider whom Alistair put bandaids on. During that time, she called Jory 'That seems like a Cowardly thing to do." Alistair surpised her by defending Jory.

After they killed mutilply Darkspawn, and got the three bottles of Darkspawn blood (which was there primary goal that Duncan sent them off on), they came across the Ancient Grey Warden Treaties, to Surana's surprise, the box of which it was held in was destroyed! Ransacked! She was not in the best mood when Morrigan came out, but nevertheless she was very polite to Morrigan. She asked Morrigan if they could meet her mother, which Morrigan though was a fine Idea. When they met the strange woman named Flemeth, she was still anguish but kept it within her. She was quite polite towards Flemeth and then once they had the treaties, Morrigan lend them back to Ostagar, at the request of Flemeth.

That's even more awkward. I feel like my lady Inquisitor is too mature and battle hardened for Sera. Sera's what... 18? She's probably better off with a girl, who's just as young and crazy as her.

I keep fiddling with the guy Inq's face, he just looks ... blockish. I don't know, maybe it's his big blocky body that's causing it (illusion).

On a note, Trespasser made me realise how really short people's memories are (cough...Teagan...cough). Politicians are a vicious breed of piranhas when times are good, and a flock of useless bleating sheep that deserved to be slaughtered when the going is bad. That's just typical of them but whatever are the common people to think of the Herald? What explanation for the lost forearm? Was it blamed on the qunari?  Ten to one, some of them would think it's a fall from grace, some would think the Maker removed it because healing the sky is done, some may even think the Ing had gone bad, that's why the Devine took control. I think it would be bruited about that the qunari cut it off, that the Inq lost it protecting Thedas and the Devine, under the providence of the Maker, is doing her part to support the Inq in times of need. Wondering what's the ground climate going to be like in DA4.

It kind of reminds me of the cold reception Shepard gets from the Council at the beginning of ME2:

Council: "Yes, you saved us from a 'Reaper' [Cory] invasion but we don't want to talk about that. Now you're just criminal trash and not worth our time."

Shepard : "Uh, I was dead?"

Inky: "Uh, there was a hole in the sky, and if that strange green light over yonder is any indication, it's not completely healed after all. Plus, qunari."

What is it with Bioware and two year time skips causing everyone to have selective amnesia?

As for Teagan, according to WoT2, he was a terrible history student, so perhaps his antics in Trespasser shouldn't surprise us after all. :P

I've to confess I'm still not liking the male Inq's movements. His initial heavy awkward stomping (I might even put this initial bumbling as deliberate by the devs) has smoothed out to a more fluid stomping.  But it is still a form of stomping, exaggerated, to me. Expensive wagging of the broad shoulders, seemingly big biting strides which gives the illusion, he's running fast. um, no. No diff from the female Inq, actually, in terms of running speed.

I ended up using Solas for exploration and fighting, then using male Inq to close the rifts. And discovered that, Solas suffered fewer injuries when I maintain control. Ok, looks like I'll be using a quasi-Inq for this PT.

Going for the mages in this PT and I think I've been too idiotic when it comes selecting the ppl for important outings. :P  Cass always goes but I'm going to leave her behind and bring Solas instead. I'll probably change out Varric for Sera, if only to see how she goes whacky; I haven't yet bring her out on anything in 9 PTs. Pity the experience won't remain with her.

Oh yeah, here's the bro to female Inq. A typical look but I'm not going to spend hours fiddling diddling at CC.

WTH. Went to take down the Hinterlands Dragon. Went to hide at the overhang of the perch she sat on because she always call up her babies at this point. The dragonlings usually appear near the entry point or tumble off the perch mama was on. But on this occasion....a Red Templar dropped down.  With a dragonling. Just as he went down, I spotted  a couple more hightailing over the top of a slope. After the dragon went down, I looked and found the other two at the RT spawn spot near the water. This is the first time I see RTs getting mixed up in a dragon fight.

It seems to me there's always a little something new popping up in each PT. :D

You know, I've heard tales of red templars popping up for people in this area.  I've never once had it happen, and I've played the game like 12 times.  LOL.  Funny what happens randomly.  I did have a bear take out the templars in the Hinterland that Cassandra was hunting.  That was hilars.
