I'm just about to finish my second rift mage PT on nightmare since Trespasser was released. What's the problem supposed to be?
This will require some game mechanics nerdisms, so bear with me.
Quote, "Rift Mage has a bug that causes weakness on top of shocked to turn into sleeping status. Which means that Rift Mage can't use any ability or weapon that causes shocked, like Static Cage. No other mage has that limitation, so that means Rift Mage is broken."
The first part is true. The second part, IMO, is overblown.
The bug is a real problem, because RM passives for regenerating mana and damage buffs/debuffs rely on weakness status. If weakness isn't "sticking", those passives don't work.
My disagreement with this meme is that these problems are exaggerated. Arguably, RM is OP when all passives are working, so losing out when that particular sequence of events happens brings things back to a reasonably level playing field. And if you really hate that, you can arrange for shocked to never happen. It's a choice. Either avoid using Storm abilities or use them and just deal with an occasional debuff.
Plus, there is a bright side. You can exploit the bug by going for combos based on sleeping. Go ahead and loadout your Rift Mage with Chain Lighting and Static Cage, and have your rogue and warrior combo the heck out of those sleeping mooks.

Or you can not realise that there's a bug and still win fights pretty easily because the game's not actually that difficult.
(Granted I haven't been playing with Walk Softly enabled, but still...)

Wait...that's a bug? ![]()
I...I keep speccing Solas with Static Cage and I love it ![]()
Then again, I don't really care about his passive buffs/debuffs. The only two RM spells I really care about, are Stone Fist and Firestorm ![]()
Even my RM Inky Bruce Lavellan uses Lightning spells and I surely won't stop with that, just because of some passive bug. ![]()
And yeah, I prefer sleeping enemies to weakened enemies. Nightmare Combos! ![]()

Is it an actual bug though, or "working as intended"?

Idk, but the DA wikia Combo page says about Sleep:
Note: This special combo will not work if Shock is applied to Weakened enemies, only if Weaken is inflicted on Shocked enemies. Also, the Weakened combo detonation (Stun + Eldritch) does not follow the same rules as the Weakened status effect, in that affected enemies will not restore a Rift Mage's mana via Restorative Veil, for example, nor can it be used to trigger the Sleep condition

That is a subject of debate. Most believe bug, some believe intended.
I'm not surprised most people don't even notice it. RM is more about the effects of the abilities for most people anyway.
For those that do care, git gud! If you always apply weakened before shocked, you never have this problem. ![]()

As I usually cast pull of the abyss from the Inquisitor then static cage from my other mage (generally Dorian) that could be part of the reason I've never noticed any problem.

RM can do one of my favourite things - SHATTER. Who cares about anything else if you can do that!
I'm serious about shatter. It's what I did most of the time as RM, Tempest and even in ME whenever I can.
SHATTER.

Am taking Cass, Solas and Cole. Decided Sam's lovely lady needed a new shield. Now I know about the "flashing" issues with Best Defense, but is there any real problem with using that shield? I love the way it looks, and dammit! If the stupid horny peeps can take me out in MP, just by walking near one of dem shields, I want Cass to have that power as well!
Thoughts on this shield?

Heading into The Deep Roads with Samhal Lavellan. Originally I wasn't going to do Descent....buttttt, I changed me mind. I just couldn't NOT do it.

I like the shield, gave it to Blackwall.
The flashing will appear in cutscenes, but otherwise I hadn't any issues.
(I don't mind the flashing)

Later, Natalia, Cassandra, Bull and Dorian ventured into the Hissing Wastes. They uncovered all of the Dwarven treasures and defeated the last high dragon. Bull was ecstatic, however, he and Dorian were getting to know each other more
Now that all of the zones are cleared, I think it's time Nat attends the winter ball. Empress Celene must've finished all the booze in the cellar and ordered more for the long postponed party ;P

Started playing my archer male Trevelyan, Arthur, again and managed to get most of the Forbidden Oasis done and unlocked the side quests for his specializations. I'm going to make him an assassin, I've done tempest twice now and just wanted to switch things up. Tomorrow I'll work on the assassin unlock and start Crestwood (easily my favorite place in the game). It feels good to be back to questing and Inquisitioning (is that a word?
) in Thedas.

Did Cole's "Subjected to his Will" quest yesterday~
My sweet little ghost baby ![]()
Also, that's the first time I chose the snarky answer in the dialogue wheel in Val Royeaux, it's like the answer was made for Greed ![]()
some screenies~
Edit: I also finished Cullen's quest "Before the Dawn" and now wonder if I should finish the quests in the Emerald Graves, head to the Hissing Wastes (because of the Vints searching for elven artifacts) or just start What Pride Had Wrought. ![]()

I don't usually have subtitles turned on for cutscenes, but I wanted to record Conwenna's words for posterity...
Spoiler
(Love Josie's face in the first pic...)
You know.. of all the choices one can pick in this scene, "This effing thing" is the only one I ever pick. It's just appropriate on so many levels. Has anyone actually ever picked the other choices? I don't even know how they sound because I've never bothered to try them.

I haven't used the swearing option yet, cause they didn't fit my Inkies.
Uff, what did I choose.... *digs through her screenshots*
Haya: All, I wanted, was, that the Exalted Council passes without incidents.

I think that's the sad option? ![]()

I chose the sad, "I don't want to die" dialogue option once and I felt it was appropriate for my Inquisitor, who married Cullen. Plus the hug afterwards T_T
But I like the "Could one thing in this f#cking world just stay fixed!" rant best. Can't blame Inky for getting fed up with all the shite she's been getting ![]()
As for the other two choices, the stoic one Inky says, "It's fine. I'm okay." That one sounds bland IMO.
The last one sounds like the Inquisitor resolves her fate, "I don't know what's happening with the anchor, there's not much time. I need to get to the Davaraad while I can still fight."

Reading your post tells me, 1) that I used the wrong picture and 2) I don't have a pic of that dialogue. ![]()
Hmm, but if I remember right, then I think I used either the Sad, or the Stoic option with Haya ![]()
Kiri used the last option. Made sense for her. (her LI is Solas, that speaks for itself
)

I'm entirely too offended on all of my inquisitor's behalfs to pick any other option other than the angry one. I felt it was super appropriate for Rafe because he was a take no BS kind of guy. They've worked too damn hard for the continent to not be appreciated (Dorian was totally right on that). I guess my righteous indignation gets in the way, as it were.
