The journey of Warden Commander Drako Amell, The Hero of Ferelden: (DA:O, DA:A, and Witch hunt)
Met with Merrill this morning for our weekly brunch. Brought her some Blue Berry muffins. They always put a smile on her face. When I arrive she tells me there is something I need to see. There is a giant mirror sitting in her bed room. She seemed quite taken with it, so I assumed it was more than just a mirror. She called it an Eluvian. Some old elven artifact. It's suppose to be a magical mirror, but whatever it's suppose to do it's not doing it. She asks for my help in speaking with the Keeper in acquiring a tool to repair the mirror. I wasn't sure what to make of this, but it meant alot to Merrill. After some prodding and her puppy eyes, I agree to help her. After finishing off a few muffins, we head out for the mountain. Bump into Anders and Fenris on the way out. The were having a spirited... discussion... about the "Mage/Templar situation". Before either of them start to flare bright blue, I ask them to come along with us. Merrill very nervously says, "...Really...?" I just wanted to get them out of the area before the Templars or city guard came snooping...
...After making Merrill's plea we are given a task to fulfill in exchange for the tool Merrill needs. There is a Varterral near by that has killed a number of the clan's hunters. We have been asked to slay it... Not that I knew what this creature was nor what it even looked like. Merrill seemed certain so we headed out to where the beast was last spotted. A series of caves near by. We searched the pathways for over an hour fighting our way through spiders and undead before we found the beast. It had just claimed it's latest, and last, victim. After a short argument with the Keeper, she eventually hands over the artifact. An odd looking knife of sorts. Some of the argument between Merrill and the Keeper was concerning but other than "Bad Merrill" you weren't going to get anything out of Marethari. We left for the city soon after. The other clan members were giving us a foul look. I don't really understand what's going on, but it's clear that this is what drove Merrill from her clan...
After things with Merrill were squared away, I ran a few errands and then dropped by the Hanged Man. Isabella wanted a word. Seems she got another lead on her missing relic. Her leads usually end up with someone digging around in sea weed, but she seemed excited about this one. She asked me if I would go with her to check it out. She never has told me what this thing was, but I know she knows. She just doesn't want to tell me. I agree to help her. Maybe if I keep her talking, something will eventually slip. Then I notice Varric over in a corner glaring into a fire place. When I go over to see what's wrong, he tells me that he believes Bartrand is back in town. I find it hard to believe, but Varric's information is rarely wrong. Never when it's something this important. Isabella's relic will have to wait. This bastard is not escaping again!...
...We meet with Varrics contacts and get a run down on the mansion Bartrand is said to be staying in. A wealthy merchant like Bartrand should have the place clean and guards outside every door and inside every window, but the place looks like it has been abandoned for months. I can feel an dark aura around the place... something is in there...Nothing good though. We enter through the service passage and storm our way through the halls. The place is crawling with mad men and corpses. We find only one servant still alive. Not sure how much of what he said that could be believed. He was obviously traumatized by something. When we finally find Bartrand, he's barking mad. Ranting about voices and "feeding the idol". I suddenly realize what the dark aura around the house is. It's the same as what I felt coming off the statue we found in the Deep Roads. It's weaker, but it's definitely coming from Bartrand. It's infected him somehow and robbed him of his mind. What the hell was that thing?
There is little choice. Either we leave him to his insanity, or put him down. Killing him was always the likely outcome, but this what not how I saw things turning out. Whatever that Idol did to him, he won't be a danger to anyone else anymore. Varric would never show it, but I know he is heart broken. Before he died, amid his rantings, Bartrand mentioned a woman he sold the Idol to. The servant we found said that the reason they came back to Kirkwall was to get it back. Whatever poor soul has that blighted thing, Bartrand clearly believed them to still be in the city. Varric intends to search for this person. I don't know where the idol is and I don't want to know, but if it's in the city then it's a danger to everyone around it. We spread word through our respective contacts to keep an eye out for it... I hope we never find that damned thing... We return to the Hanged Man and I drink with my friend into the wee hours of the morning...
...I wake up a little past noon in one of the back rooms with a splitting head ache. Isabella stands at the door, "Well you're a fine mess aren't you?" After I pull myself together enough to walk, I drag myself home and Bodahn helps me up the stairs to my room. I don't know what we were drinking last night, but I can't even see straight. I'm just lucky the streets were mostly empty. Crowded streets are not a good place for one who can only see through one blood shot eye... Andrates flaming ass... I swear I am never drinking again...
