It's kind of amazing how much damage they can soak up. I haven't come across any yet on my current game. Not looking forward to having to melee them for real this time. Fought a few with my very first ill-fated DW rogue (she of the forever lost savegames), but Cassandra and Blackwall/Bull did most of the heavy lifting then.I learned my hate for bears in DAI.

They're the worst on NM. They never leave me alone so I have a habit of...throwing Cass to the wolves bears and running for it in early-game ![]()
Everyone complained about spiders before so they replaced them with bears. I hope next time we're stuck in the Fade we have to deal with bears instead of spiders *evil cackling*

Ew, fade bears
Actually, now that I think of it, wasn't that a thing in DAO? Also I think Morrigan could turn into a bear. Now in addition to trying not to make a fool of myself in front of birds that look like they could be Leliana's, I'm going to be wondering if the bears trying to eat me are actually Morrigan trolling ![]()

And on top of them being tanks, they have that pesky frost-resistance to chase down squishy mages with!
I don't know how quick your reflexes are, but I've found Evade works wonders to avoid their AoE if you can time it right. I imagine it's the same principle with Shield Wall/Block and Slash. Or better yet, just avoid Bear's Hafter's Woods ![]()

hey, that's right! In the mage origin story, it's the riddling sloth demon who takes the form of a fade bear, and "teaches" your accompanying demon to take the shape of a bear. Also in the dalish origin story, you and Tamlen fight one in the eluvian room. IIRC, no matter your origin story, you can conjure one as part of the "summoning sciences" side quest when you go to the Circle tower later on.Actually, now that I think of it, wasn't that a thing in DAO? Actually, I never specced Evasion. If Harold got in trouble I just used Leaping Shot to get away, or later on, I crafted some armor with fade-touched Gurgut webbing (or something). It gave a +50% movement speed bonus while stealthed... so I'd just run away.

I gave Sera fade touched silverite for her armor when hit gain 5 guard and for her weapon, I gave her fade touched silverite with a 10% chance to inflict chain lightning at 100% weapon damage. She did really well. The only times she got in trouble was when a dragon used fire breath or frost breath. Even then I would have her move to another location.

Neralah Cadash has had a very hectic few weeks. With the mages' power boost, she was able to seal the Breach just liked they'd planned. Of course, in her experience, when things go according to plan, that usually means disaster is right around the corner and wouldn't you know it? Just as they were celebrating their success, disaster struck in the form of a crazy ancient darkspawn magister and his pet dragon. What the....??! BOOM!
And now she knows what happened to the templars that disappeared. Here they were, distorted and corrupted by red lyrium, and charging in waves. Oh crap. All right, first things first....get the trebuchets firing and then hightail it back to the Chantry. That worked, until pet dragon blew up trebuchet number two just after she finally got it working.
Stupid dragon. Ok, sound the retreat. Wait.....someone's trapped. It's Harritt, the blacksmith. Got him, move on. More templars all over the place, buildings burning, more trapped villagers. Nery managed to save them all ["pause" was my uber-friend during this sequence, as was the game guide
] and got everyone safely to the Chantry. The building was sturdy, but even it wouldn't stand against a dragon for long. Time for plan D. What happened to plans A, B, and C? Dragon.
Chancellor Roderick, of all people, had an idea. A secret path through the mountains would allow the people to escape, but only if the dragon could be distracted. Nery grabbed Blackwall, Varric, and Solas, and sent the rest of her team to guard the villagers. They would have the time they needed. It was a long fight back to the last working trebuchet and, of course, it was aimed in the wrong direction. But her team was strong and, though she was surrounded by enemies at every turn, they never touched her while she battled with the machine to get it turned around.
Then....BOOM! Nery was starting to really not like that dragon. The blast threw her out of range of the trebuchet trigger, and she had no idea where her companions might have ended up. Hopefully, they escaped. If not, well, she'd worry about that later. She just needed to keep crazy darkspawn magister guy and his dragon focused on her for a few more minutes. That was pretty easy, since she was who he was after anyways. Well, the mark on her hand, something he called the "anchor" that was supposed to let him open a path to the Fade. Yep, definitely crazy. While he blathered on and on about how she had ruined all his plans, Nery kept an eye on the mountain behind him. She had just barely made out the torches emerging from the tree line when Corypheus, finally done with his tirade, threw her up against the trebuchet. Ow, but thank you for your terrific aim. She just needed to wait a few more seconds......she dodged left, hit the release, and ran as fast as she could to the cave entrance she'd already marked as her escape route. Head first down the rabbit hole, with the sounds of Haven being buried echoing behind her.

.
I went for all three dragons in Emprise du Lion last night. All in a row.
I really needed those dragon crafting materials.
I brought Cassandra, Vivienne and Dorian. As usual I didn't have much work to do but scratch my behind. I was looting dragonlings while they took care of the adults.
Fade Touched?
On the weapons i use 'On Hit: Heal 1% of Maximum Health'.
On the armor i use 'Heal 25% of dammage taken over 10 seconds'.
For shields I use 'On Hit: Gain 5 Guard'.
Cassandra is invincible. I scratch my head looking at her fighting. How does she do it?
Dorian's protection is not good enough. I saw him loose up to 25% of his health a couple of times. I must have a look at his stats.
I allowed Vivienne to use Resurgence (Focus drawn). I hardly think its needed, but in any case. We just had a cozy time collecting dragon materials. Some grabs the basket and finds a nice wood. Some go dragon hunting.
I feel so sorry for these beautiful creatures. I have to close my eyes when they take their last breath. So humiliating. Very.
I wish for the next game that you can become friends with a dragon instead of killing it.
Finished here I went to The Exalted Plains with Solas to help his friend. His personal quest 'All New, Faded for Her'.
We didn't save her, but I allowed him to kill the mages afterwards. That apparently helped a bit on his approval. He returned to Skyhold and was very grateful. I gave him a bag of candy and he smiled like a child. I also think the new armor with dragon webbing helped a bit...

Part 2....wanted to post Part 1 before I lost power or accidentally hit "delete" (not that I've ever done that before....
)
Nery doesn't like being cold, or wet. She's decided when this (whatever this might be) is all done, she's going someplace warm and dry and never leaving. So where did she end up after exiting the rabbit hole? In the middle of the blasted mountains in the middle of a freaking blizzard.
And the glowy thing on her hand is doing weird glowy things it never did before. Too bad it can't glowy up a nice toasty campfire. That would actually be helpful. What did that crazy Cory guy do to her anyway?
On she trudged, one day, then another. No food, little shelter. Lots of snow though, so at least she wouldn't die of thirst if she could get it to melt. Campfire remains, more recent each time she found them, meant she was at least heading towards people. Hopefully the right people. When she finally heard voices, she was sure it was just delirium. She imagined being cradled in Blackwall's strong arms
and allowed exhaustion to take her.
She woke to arguing, and Mother Giselle next to her. So, it wasn't delirium after all? At least, not completely. What Giselle said worried her. Now not only were people viewing her as the "Chosen of Andraste," but returned from the dead as well?! This just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Solas was also acting weird, though it turns out he was just worried. The orb thing Cory used to try to remove the anchor was an elven artifact and he was worried elves might somehow be considered responsible for what happened at the Conclave. [Of course, an elf IS responsible, sort of, but Nery doesn't know that.
] Solas told her of a place to the north, an old fortress left abandoned for some reason. That she should lead the people there. So on they marched, through the mountains, ever northward, day in and day out. She couldn't find Blackwall though. He was avoiding her for some reason. Irritating man! He defends her in battle, carries her to safety (she thinks) but can't stand to speak to her for 5 minutes? [insert a Cassandra "disgusted noise" here].
Then they were there. Skyhold, the place is called, and what a place it is! It's huge....a building as large as Haven, maybe bigger. It's got courtyards and battlements; a garden, a library; a basement bigger than the Haven Chantry; a wine cellar, a forge. It's got everything. It needs some work, true, but this is where they can start over. But not before the advisor squad has another surprise for Nery. A promotion of sorts, actually. She thinks they all have stone for brains wanting to name her Inquisitor [she's a dwarf, for cryin' out loud!] but they were certain. She thinks they just don't want the headache of being the so-called leader. So what's an ex-Carta thug-turned prisoner-turned Herald-turned back-from-the-dead dwarf supposed to do? Accept, of course.

Quickly set up a world state with a default Hawke (no romance, both siblings dead). I’ll use that for a future playthrough where Hawke will die. It’s tied to a romanced Warden Alistair for some extra motivation. Varric’s misery is gonna hurt though.Time for Adaar to follow up Hawke’s lead in Crestwood. The place was a real mess when the team got there, and not just because of the undead. I know it’s raining, but have you seen the amount of damp in those houses? It’s worse than Therinfal, and that place literally had rivers running down the walls! One house even had damp in the fireplace. The lit fireplace. Adaar offered to make that fire a little stronger and burn away the damp, but for some reason the villagers were reluctant. There were an awful lot of spirits floating round old Crestwood, all of which looked like they’d been Tangoed. One in particular was called Command, and managed to baffle Cass and insult Cole. Ah, I do like spirits. Adaar took her (it?) up on the offer of killing a big rage demon.Encountered the adorable nugs frolicking in the Flooded Caves again, and this time Cassandra told us about how Leliana has a nug of her own! Which makes me wonder... has Cass met Schmooples? Did she ever have to babysit? I love the idea of her looking after a nug with a mixture of exasperation and secret fondness. After that was all finished, the team headed up to meet Stroud: the man, the mystery, the moustache. He and Hawke are definitely friendlier than Hawke and Loghain. Which makes sense, considering that Stroud was the guy who saved her brother’s life. And that whole Ostagar thing. She didn’t even threaten to murder-knife Stroud once. Hawke followed us out of the caves for a bit, so I spent a while herding her around for screenshots. I’m sure she didn’t mind, but she probably thinks Adaar is a bit odd by now.We wrapped things up by taking on the Northern Hunter, a feat which was rather easy, between Cassandra and a Knight Enchanter. Adaar just had to babysit Cole and Varric a bit, and then bam, dead dragon. Really need to bring Iron Bull for the next one. Possibly Sera, she enjoys that too. I think the both of them have had similar feelings about great respect.
Wow, cursed Hawke is cursed
... Heh, I crafted a world state with a Hawke I'd never play, just so I could see how leaving him in the fade played out. He wasn't a very nice guy, but poor Varric still needed a hug after we got back.
Cassandra definitely needs her own pet, something to read her books to
Never got the fade touched you mentioned. I'm sure there are one's I haven't gathered at all that I don't know about.

Part 3
Now it's time to get back to work. The new war table looks like a giant pin cushion with all the possible missions marked on it. People are starting to take the Inquisition seriously for a change, or they just want to test them. First priority: send scouts to set up camps in new areas. Second: bring in this "arcanist" they've been told about; they are going to need the best weapons and armor they can get. Third: bring in "specialist" trainers for Nery. She's a warrior so her choices are:
1. Reaver - get to drink dragon blood. Uh, no thanks.
2. Templar - get addicted to lyrium. Uh, no thanks (Cullen says thank you).
3. Champion - get....accolades? Well, that sounds better than the other two. It also just happens to be Blackwall's specialization as well.
[Normally I pick a different class than my LI but that didn't happen this time. Blackwall would probably be fun to romance as a mage since he doesn't seem to like magic users all that much.
]
Nery needs 3 different pieces of champion heraldry in order to get elected to the club, so she decided to hit the Exalted Plains first. Not a good idea. The place was crawling with undead (her other not favorite thing) and since they were soldiers in life, these undead were way more powerful than the ones in the bog down south, who had been just simple villagers. After getting their behinds handed to them trying to clear out one rampart, they retreated and decided to come back later. With lots of fire.
They were able to close some rifts in the area though, and helped clear out one of the forts where Orlesians soldiers had retreated.
Since the undead in the Plains were a no-go, Nery decided to follow up on Varric's friend's tip and head to Crestwood to meet with her Warden friend. What's in Crestwood? More undead!
But again, these were villagers and farmers in life, easier to take out than the undead soldiers. The cause? A rift opened up under water at the site of a flood 10 years ago. Wonderful. How the heck is Nery supposed to seal a rift she can't get to? Well, it turns out there is a dam, and the dam has controls, so she can drain the lake. Unfortunately, said controls are only accessible via a keep that has been taken over by bandits. Sigh. Why can't anything be easy? Still, the thought of gaining control of a keep in this area was appealing, so off she dragged Blackwall, Solas, and the strange young man (spirit?) Cole, to take them out.
Some of the bandits actually seemed to not want to kill her but bandit boss guy ordered them to attack anyway. Which they did, and then they died. Keep recovered and dam accessible. With the lake drained, the old caves should now be reachable. [Huh, I just realized that after I drained the lake, I didn't go back outside to see the dragon fly-by. I think I just fast-traveled to the camp near Old Crestwood from inside the building. Ah, the perils of multiple play-throughs!] Down they went until finally they reached some old dwarven tunnels. Nery wondered if there were other rifts in the Deep Roads that she would have no way of finding. Certainly possible, but at least they could get to this one. It was much larger than any they'd come across before, and several waves of demons spilled out before she was finally able to seal it. They explored the ruins further and came out somewhere far to the east of where they'd entered. An old smugglers' entrance, it appeared. Lots of interesting finds, including more of those strange mosaic tiles. They headed back to town to tell the mayor the good news, only to find him gone. He'd left a note though, confessing that he was the one who flooded the village during the Blight. That's just....sickening. How do you even live with yourself after doing something like that? Nery had killed a lot of people in her life, but never like that. She hoped she never had to.
Back at Skyhold, Nery was finally able to get Blackwall to talk to her. But, it didn't really go as she'd hoped. He was....reluctant, to say the least, to get involved with her because of her status. Her stupid "herald/chosen/inquisitor" status that she didn't even believe in. But he did. He believed in duty first, blah blah, sacrifice this and honor that. Stupid Warden code and all that....gah, all that infuriating crap. But she persisted and he finally asked her to come with him to the Storm Coast. To do what, she wasn't certain, but whatever he wanted, she'd do it. They found an old camp, one of his old camps, where he said another Warden had died to save him. That death changed him, made him realize that death was his life. Nery wasn't buying it.....her life was full of death and tromping through muck too. How was that any different? [I really, really thought he might tell her the truth in this scene, even though I knew he wouldn't because that would take out all the angst from "Revelations," later on. But I was so sure he would..... That's some great writing, imo.]

Because Dofni will be romancing Blackwall in my game too, that's pretty much the only reason I didn't want to pick Champion as a specialization. I like having as wide a variety of skills as possible when I'm out wandering, but I dunno, we'll see which of the trainers I like best, heh.
And it was tough not to notice how little love Blackwall and Viv had for each other in my last game. Entertaining, but at least Cassie and Harold didn't have to get into the middle of it, heh. Good thing too; they were too wrapped up in each other. Also, yeah, Blackwall couldn't get along with Dorian much either, but I never really put it down to him being a mage so much as being from Tevinter. Ah well, I didn't take them out adventuring together too often. I just figured Blackwall needed a break from Viv now and then before that vein in his forehead exploded.
Now that I've recruited Blackwall I haven't decided on a main party make-up yet. Sent Cassandra back to Haven to make room for him, and it already feels weird not to have her by my side.
Kinda want to take Sera out and about -- have to get her some armor first -- but for now am still using Varric for rogue duty. Either way I won't be using either of them too much once I recruit Cole. Cole is gonna be the go-to thief this time.
Dofni has spent the day so far talking with all her companions and advisors. The more she talks the more she can't wait to get out into the wilderness and hit something with her sword. Sigh. Soon. Got a little more talking to do first, and war table missions to plan.

On nightmare and started at level 18.
As you all probably guessed, I spent most of the time today in Crestwood trying to kill the dragon. To cut a long story short, I failed on 4 attempts. Then I cut the party down to the inquisitor and just Vivienne because the electric circle was annoying I didn't even realise that you can dispel the effect until today. I didn't really do anything different. The inquisitor died straight away so I controlled Vivienne and started the spirit blade attack on loop until the dragon fell. It probably took about 5-10 mins which is pretty short by my normal standards
(Second dragon on nightmare complete). I didn't get that much experience from the dragon and I still was at lv 18.
Went back to the Exalted Plains and there are hordes of undead. I liberated the first area and then ventured west to the Dalish camp. Turns out that they need help as well and the inquisitor is compelled to help. I went to herd a golden Halla and it actually survived (which is a first for me). There were no wolves at all so the inquisitor's luck may be changing. I also helped get rid of some demons and I had to restrain my roguish tendencies when near the graves. I went back to get the Dalish favour but then I went straight back afterwards to loot the tomb. In my defence, there were demons in some of the graves so I can interpret this as doing a service as the dead can now rest in peace. Unless it was the Dread Wolf's influence making me 'trick' the Dalish clan
.
I collected some shard and closed some rifts. This helped me to lv 19. Went back to Skyhold and the inquisitor started sleep talking to Solas. Solas then wanted me to look for a friend in the Exalted Plains (We were just there!!!). Got to spend a point from influence and I chose 'True Grit' so this should help me in the future
.
Went back to Exalted Plains and I plan to complete some more quests tomorrow.

That's the thing I noticed with my K-E too; particularly against dragons, the fights were about outlasting the beast and whittling away at its health, rather than killing it somewhat quickly.
It probably took about 5-10 mins which is pretty short by my normal standards(Second dragon on nightmare complete). I didn't get that much experience from the dragon and I still was at lv 18.
