How is Guard determined?

I'm trying to figure out what stats tie in to a character's base level of Guard.

I made a Qunari sword-and-shield fighter.  At level 5, her 'guard' stat is maybe half of Cassandra's.  They have identical equipment, and nearly identical skill setups (Cassandra has 'challenge' and the second level of Shield Wall, the Qunari has the damage return).   Shield Wall isn't on yet, but at the start of every fight, Cassandra has a bar of Guard across her entire health bar (although sometimes only half), but the Qunari gets a gray bar that's only a quarter of that.  On the records screen Cassandra has 150+ Guard, whereas the Qunari has something in the 80s.

So what stats influence Guard?  Why, with the two characters set up nearly the same, does Cassandra have so much more combat durability than the main character?  What am I missing?

Your max guard possible is initially equal to 25% of your total health, IIRC.  This can be increased through a Vanguard passive and a Champion passive, to increase your max possible guard to be 37.5% of your total health. To see what your max guard is, you have to have max guard up, IE: get hit with shield wall or war-cry up to 100% guard, and then pause and go to the character screen to see what you have.

If you're asking what abilities generate guard, it's War Cry, Challenge, Shield Block, 2nd Rank Block and Slash, 2nd Rank Walking Fortress, 2nd Rank To The Death,Charging Bull, Unbowed, and Rally. Also Fade Touched Obsidian will give you a 3 guard on hit enchant.  Some other weapons may be enchanted with this in the game.

Edit: One of the reasons you may be noticing Casandra with higher Guard (more or all of her health bar) is because the AI in the game, while oftentimes bad at doing things, is actually really good at using Shield Wall to "quick-block" attacks and thereby generate guard.  With practice you can be even better, but initially, Cass and Blackwall are pretty ace at using Shield Wall.
