In DA:O nugs were only found in the Deep, and Dwarven areas underground. However, somehow after the 5th blight they made it to the surface. Now in the deep nugs had very little food and managed to thrive in that enviroment, on the surface they have boomed because they can eat anything, they have a fast and short reproductive cycle. This is why they are quickly becoming dominant species even though they are easy to kill, and taste good.

It's all Leliana's fault. Schmooples is the progenitor of Thedas' destruction. Soon the nugs will conquer the world.

That would explain why they made him canon.

What's this about Cassandra giving disapproval for killing nugs? I've killed enough nugs, fennecs, ram and whatever other wildlife to line the court of Skyhold with nary a dip.

I do feel rather bad when critters get in my way - all those poor dead snoufleurs. Well, maybe someday someone clever will come up with nug repellent.

This makes me think of possum in the south, if you've lived in the south you know that possum are the number 1 road kill down there and are horrible at avoiding traffic.

To go with that someone in North Carolina told me a joke....

"Why'd the chicken cross the road?"

"To show the possum it could be done."

Cole yelled at me once for killing a nug. "It wasn't doing anything!"

I felt like a horrible monster, and he gave me disapproval :(

I'm more confused as to how hugs -a hairless animal- can survive in the Cost back mountain

I haven't had anyone give me disapproval for killing nugs, and I've guiltily slaughtered them with every companion. If I was a companion I'd be giving disapproval though, they're just so cute and pointless.

Argh I know what you mean. I always wondered why Cassandra disapproved and Sera approved randomly in that dwarven area with all the nugs, didn't realize my Inquisitor was kicking them.

My horse was sprinting through the Storm Coast and these two little nugs came out of nowhere and I hit one of them. I actually gasped in horror, but instead of dying it did this cute tumble and screamed then ran off. Whew.

Not true, In Leliana's Song, which takes place before the Fifth Blight, in Arl's mansion we find a room full of nug carcases. It makes sense that once surface dwarves had enough wealth they would bring delicacies that they had a habit of eating or that would connect them to Orzammar.

True, they would bring them up as food stuff, or use their hides. However surface wild nugs had not yet happened, someone allowed a pet nug on the surface to breed freely, and didn't keep it caged. Not saying who, not pointing fingers, just saying that Schmooples was female and pregnant, and her offspring was not fixed.

Nugs have been on the surface since at least the Exalted Age, since in 5:20 Kirkwall declared them as a noxious vermin since they feared that nugs may carry the Blight due to them being from the Deep Roads. This resulted in an attempted extermination called the Battle of Squealing Plains.

I feel the same way but luckily I haven't got that suicide bug in my game. I accidentally killed one once and then quickly loaded a previous save. :D  I actually try to avoid killing animals in my game, even the rams for their meat. It's good that you can still complete the ram meat quest without killing any, since you can loot ram meat from different camps. Also leather and fur are found nicely with looting. Unfortunately it's not always possible to avoid killing some animals since they attack you outright.

I knew that killing certain enemies will earn a point of approval for certain party members but I never heard of losing approval from killing certain critters.

I've never lost approval for killing any critters, and after reading the codex entry on them, really, it's for the best. Poor things. They can't stop peeing. The whole world is just endlessly coated with nug pee. They need to be pruned back a bit. Besides, I need some new nug leather gear.

No, it's a dire nug, they are like regular nugs but dire.

Woops, that "with" should have been a "will" - belated edit to my earlier post...ahem, anyway, I think the issue is that one specific nug family in Crestwood that I found. I figured that when the gang started talking about those nugs like they were one step away from adopting all of them (Leliana probably would have approved if they had), I was going to be extra careful around them and try not to accidentally turn them into nugsicles (my first spec was frost, so...yeah).
