I'm pondering whenever to go shard-hunting, but first I'd like to know if its worth it. The doors I have opened so far only contained a few normal items and fairly negligible resistance bonuses. Do you get something really good when you gather all the bloody shards, like unique items or bonuses? Has anyone completed it and can shed some light?

The resistances are not that negligible. You get a superb belt of fire, cold, lightning and spirit resistance from the 4 areas, a lot of experience, random loot, gold and a unique helm.

I believe there's an Inquisitor Amulet of Power in there as well. And yah, fully clearing an element gives pretty serious resistances.
