Or at least the intermediary 'poisoned' himself doesn't mean the person who was really behind is dead this is especially given what country we are talking about.

Well, if it went all the way to the top with Gaspard being the one who gave the initial order, he can be executed in the game.

He never forgets what he did and it quite clearly weighs on him everyday. That is because he is a good man and what happened was a tragic mistake. He doesn't let himself forget and does what he can to atone for what he did. That is everything he can do from there. Punishing him further is the equivalent of kicking a person when they are already down. There is a thin line between justice and vengeance and wanting him dead isn't justice.

We should never forgive. Bad actions don't suddenly become OK because the person is sorry or because time has passed. We are all accountable forever for the bad things we do.

Blackwall is held accountable though if sent to the Wardens.

He'll be poisoned by the Blight during the Joining and may not survive it. If he survives the Joining, he is basically terminally ill. Over the course of thirty years or so he will slowly die. He'll spend those years in a never ending war against the darkspawn (war is hell) and may fall in battle against them. Even if survives all those battles, he will eventually get to the point that he will begin to succumb to the Blight. His choice then will be either to go off and die a heroic death in the Deep Roads, dying in battle against the darkspawn, or slowly turning into a Ghoul.

But yet he's training warden recruits when we meet him, doubtful they're his first. This in in contradiction to your statement, so I'm sorry, but what?

His training them to defend their families from the bandits not training them to be Wardens. You don't see him ordering them to gather Darkspawn blood do you?

Geez, thanks a lot to the people that brought up the comic that I never read. Now all of my Hawkes that romanced Isabela should be ashamed of themselves and I may no longer be able to like her again...

I also think the main thing she has going for her to get people to over look her past isn't her charisma, it's due to the fact that she doesn't wear pants and has huge tracts of land.

Remorse is not the same as paying a debt. While he may have felt bad he spent years doing a lot of nothing to atone for his crimes. The fact that he didn't hear the calling tells you as much. He never proceeded with the ritual to become a warden. Yet when we meet him he's training recruits?

Apparently he couldn't proceed as a Warden, because they would accuse him of being the reason Blackwall died. Or something? I dunno. It's not clear to me.
