I've been playing this game for 80 hours now. I've just finished killing my 6th Dragon, and I was hoping that maybe he'll drop me some Rare Mage Robes -- mainly because I haven't gotten ONE Rare Mage Robe the entire GAME. So what does he do? HE DROPS ME A RARE MAGE ROBE THAT'S ELF TRAINED ONLY!!! Like really? Is this some sort of sick joke? What about Human Mages? Do they not exist? Are they not allowed to have Robes? I'm so mad right now, you don't even understand. Why.... why....

The RNG loot table in general leaves something to be desired.  I play an archer, I'm at about 75 hours in, and I have not gotten a single purple bow to drop.  I've killed 8 dragons now and so far, nothing.  I've had to buy all of my higher stat bows.  However, I got a 200 DPS dagger at level 6 in the Hinterlands, and have gotten plenty of other epic and rare weapons since then.  Yet a bow for a rogue archer?  Now that's just crazy talk.

I've gotten one staff drop from a Dragon. All the rest have been nothing but Rogue daggers. I... I don't understand, like this is striaght insane right now. I'm not asking for much. Just one decent pair of Robes. I feel your pain.

Craft stuff. The loot in this game simply is abysmal. It's not that you aren't getting the good stuff. There is no good stuff. Everything you craft is better than stuff of the same level you can find. That goes for common, rare and unique loot. If you use higher tier schematics and crafting materials, whatever you make yourself will be superiour to loot that you can't even yet equip due to level restrictions.

RNG is garbage.  It was bad enough in ME3, but i this game they actually managed to make it WORSE.  I know this is a SP focused thread, but the RNG applies to both.  As far as MP goes...3....maps.  It has Three.  Maps.

They aren't the worst drops. The problem is getting drops for my class. If I would've been a Rogue in this playthrough, I would've been having a blast. The Dragons have dropped nothing but Daggers and Rogue Rings left and right. I've gotten decent Warrior armor as well, armor that beats stuff that I can currently caft.

My first hundred drops were bows and I was playing as a mage.

That's weird, I'm 55 hours in and had gotten lots rare mage robes and purple bows.. :s

Huh. I got all 3 Grey Warden armours from dragons. They're called:
In War, Victory
In Peace, Vigilance
In Death, Sacrifice
I've also gotten endless blue and purple everythings.

Ah yes RNG loot gods didn't favor my archer either. Had the same bow for 6 or 7 levels before I was able to get a decent schematic.

I have been crafting stuff.  The armor schematics work well and I'm rocking some Masterwork right now.

 

The weapon crafting, however, isn't very good.  Go craft an epic bow for me and tell me if it cracks over 200 dps even with Masterwork.  If so, please send me a link.  I'm not being sarcastic; if you can show me a crafted bow that actually does as much damage as a level 7 dagger (which was the level requirement for the 200 dps dagger I got in the Hinterlands,) I'm all about it.

 

My current one, with the +32 demon rune, is only 188 dps.

I mean I've played 78 hours with a female human mage and through this entire time, I can't remember when was the last time I found some cool mage gear.  I read that people around here got some grey warden mage robes ? Where do you even get that ?

 

So all the drops and loots are rougue and warriror based.

Fallow Mire. Sidequest about Widris. He dropped Warden Battlemage robe for me at least. Not that I'm using it of course.

In Peace, Vigilance (the Warden mage armor) drops from the dragon at the Storm Coast.

That's been my experience for the past 80 hours as well. It's really disappointing and highly unrewarding. Here I am wishing and hoping with each Dragon I kill that I'll at least get one Mage robe that my character can equip. I can keep dreaming I guess.

If you want decent gear crafting is pretty much a most. =/

Most purple and blue bows, I got from exploration.  Exalted Plains in particular comes to mind, there's a purple just lying around near the riverbank.  Best mage robes were also from exploration and shops, although I could craft better if I had the schematics I wanted.  Dragons were best for weapons and high level crafting materials.

Next time save before then reload if you didn't had anything good.

My play through so far has been seen literally only two types of purple weapon drop: daggers and 2-h weapons (by far the most).  No bow, no staff.

Not certain if it was random or not, but discovered a Purple bow for my archer earlier in the game pre-Skyhold, and am still choosing it over some supposed higher DPS models dropping now at 17th lvl. This was discovered via exploration; found in an unmapped cave as I recall. While crafting could possibly result in something more capable now, I still have yet to find a masterwork item effect that is the same one as this bow (ie; Inferno on hit - 10% chance).

With 75 hours and only 1 dragon, I have a whopping 19 unique weapons and armors.

 

The loot definitely holds a candle to crafting.

If you leave the dragon head when there's bad loot, and go back to skyhold, then back to the dragon head again it will have rerolled all new loot. So... reroll it if you didn't like it the first time.

 

An exploit however is that if you take almost all but leave just one item then come back it will have entirely rerolled and respawned as well.
