I've been playing this game for 80 hours now. I've just finished killing my 6th Dragon, and I was hoping that maybe he'll drop me some Rare Mage Robes -- mainly because I haven't gotten ONE Rare Mage Robe the entire GAME. So what does he do? HE DROPS ME A RARE MAGE ROBE THAT'S ELF TRAINED ONLY!!! Like really? Is this some sort of sick joke? What about Human Mages? Do they not exist? Are they not allowed to have Robes? I'm so mad right now, you don't even understand. Why.... why.... :crying:

One of the dragons drops a rare mage grey warden robe. I forgot which one, it was either Crestwood or Emerald Graves I think.

The RNG loot table in general leaves something to be desired.  I play an archer, I'm at about 75 hours in, and I have not gotten a single purple bow to drop.  I've killed 8 dragons now and so far, nothing.  I've had to buy all of my higher stat bows.  However, I got a 200 DPS dagger at level 6 in the Hinterlands, and have gotten plenty of other epic and rare weapons since then.  Yet a bow for a rogue archer?  Now that's just crazy talk.   :(

I played archer so I feel like your pain.

I had tons of purple two handed , daggers , shields , staves but bows...are rare.

There's a merchant in Skyhold selling a really good bow though and by the end you can craft one with dragon bones and high quality material.

Another thing I noticed is that most merchants don't have anything interesting to sell... maybe I just need to play more, but most of their stuff is random junk that is below my level. I'm level 15.

there's a inquisition perk in the connections tree that unlocks some awesome items

After Wicked Hearts, there will be a new merchant there in Skyhold selling an epic bow.  That's where I got my current one.

@MN  Thank you!  I'll be using this later after I go shopping in the Hissing Wastes.   :D

Craft stuff. The loot in this game simply is abysmal. It's not that you aren't getting the good stuff. There is no good stuff. Everything you craft is better than stuff of the same level you can find. That goes for common, rare and unique loot. If you use higher tier schematics and crafting materials, whatever you make yourself will be superiour to loot that you can't even yet equip due to level restrictions.

I think it's intended; they want you to use the crafting system. I will usually craft something and find a weapon or armor 3-4 levels (character lvl, not equip lvl) above what I can equip that is inferior to what I've built.

But they seem to be a disproportionate amount of daggers drops.

Np ^^

Also, this schematic can be found as soon as the inquisition reaches enough power to unlock the Hissing Wastes, so it's not that far in the game.

I crafted one then another when I collected enough dragon bones.

If you have more stuff like that, let me know.  I'd be happy to sub.

I've got a ton of those mats still, and a couple of dragons left to kill, so I'll be in better shape very shortly.  :D

Crafting allows for way better attribute management anyway.

You know how you can't manage your attribute points anymore upon leveling up? They put in the crafting.

Adapt.

Where can I find the best LOOKING bow?  Something that looks badass, yet practical and realistic.   Because I gotta say...that spiked bow posted in the video looks like crap.  Would probably break after first draw.

Sh!t, I just completed that mission last night and chose a peaceful resolution; that'll show me for being a diplomat.

Looking forward to my second play through and be a complete religious nut a-hole; won't be an archer this time though.

Not sure if it's what you were looking for anyway. Base stats kinda suck, 107 DPS. However, it has 16% armor penetration, +11 dex, 15% flaming damage bonus. Also, on kill, target explodes for 75% of weapon damage. It also has a grip slot and a rune slot.

So the bonuses make it not a bad weapon, but if you were looking for a beast with 200+ DPS, this isn't it. TBH, I don't think I've seen a bow go that high.

From the video I saw earlier, with a Master quality rune, you can hit over 200.  In that video, by the time he was done crafting with a regular rune, it was at 199.  So once I get the third dragon down in Emprise du Lion, I'm going to make myself one of those and give Sera another hand-me-down.

And what do you know...I have frost resist potions and some new arms and legs ready to go.  I've got some payback to take care of later today.  :P

I assumed dragon loot is not rng. For purple items that is. If someone could prove other wise I would be interested to know.

As for the best bow, the one in that vid is the best schematic I have found. For a assassin bow mine is alot better than what he made in the vid. Mine has a whopping 93% crit damage bonus. I was disappointed that I never found a master craft attachment. Still, it's grossly op.

Also I feel Lightning is the best overall rune. Spirit would be the best but that rune is oddly limited to staffs.

I'm not far into the game yet, so unless I'm lucky I'll stick with crafting stuff. I've still not recovered from the trauma of farming doc mercy and the bunker in Borderlands 2 hundreds of times each and never getting their legendary drops.

I rarely use anything I pick up - I find that most of the time, I can craft something better. There are the occasional drops that I do find useful, but they are the exception, rather than the rule.

@Natashina : Maybe this could be useful?

Also, someone on the following thread has found the location of the Dalish Scout Armor (schematic). It's also in the Hissing Wastes:

@ recyclebin2000 : wow 93% crit damage ? I wonder which creature drops the good material?

Yes, the RNG lot table suck.

Next time save before then reload if you didn't had anything good.

I tried that once. The Dragon dropped the same loot. It seems like Dragons are locked into certain items right when you start your game.

If you leave the dragon head when there's bad loot, and go back to skyhold, then back to the dragon head again it will have rerolled all new loot. So... reroll it if you didn't like it the first time.

An exploit however is that if you take almost all but leave just one item then come back it will have entirely rerolled and respawned as well.

Whoa? This really works?

P.S Gratz on getting your armor, Natashina.

Oh, um, thanks.  I just crafted it.  I had apparently been sitting on loads of mats and I was able to make something pretty sweet.

By the way, exploits are probably on the chopping block come next patch, so I wouldn't get too comfy with them.  :(

Not sure which dragon you mean, but if its the one sleeping, I just killed it a short time ago on nightmare as a knight enchanter on solo. What i found that helped a lot for me was having a high critical chance and damage for my staff and for the masterwork slot I added a fade touch osidian. It adds when hit,  3 guard. This might help make your bow and character stronger.

If you mean Kaltenzahn, then yeah she is a pain. I didn't fight her solo. I had my companions with me. The stats I mentioned above helped. The biggest difference, for me anyways, is  having high critical chance and damage plus that fade touch osidian.
