Okay, I haven't played this save in over a year. This is on Insanity. My femshep is a Vanguard with 34 available level up points, Liara has 18 available points, and EDI has 34 points to spend.

This is at the part right after meeting Jack, so there is this large room with a winding ramp on the right. The shyguys are these shield guys that can take out Liara and EDI by punching them because they are having pathing problems just getting through the door.

I know there's turrets in here, but for now I'm focusing on the shyguys. What is the best way to take them out? I'm rusty with aiming through their vision and annoyed that that seems the only way to take them out. Is there a power way to deal with them?

The reason I have so many points stored is because I was either going to spend points on all offensive or all defensive, but have long forgotten.

I have that AI path finding problem on my game sometimes too. Iirc I order my squad into cover before the door closes and making sure Shepard is the last one through. Once through, Liara's Singularity should make short work of those Guardians. I'm mostly a tech guy, but doesn't the Vanguard have Pull? That'd rip those shields right out of their hands won't it?

^This. Singularity works great on them and recharges very fast. Destroy the generator on top right from where you enter, there are enemies coming from there and shield pylon is annoying. Last time I was there I used Pull - looks awesome :) You can also just put AP mods on your weapon and disregard the shields completely. Destroy the Atlas before moving to the next area, it can make the second area much more annoying.

Vazgen makes a good point: take out that generator pronto quick. Besides singularity and pull, another way to take out guardians is to have a piercing mod or AP ammo for your weapon. As a Vanguard I would recommend a piercing mod since you already have incendiary ammo as a power and there is no need for another ammo power. As a Sentinel I used AP ammo as my bonus power.

I generally focus on the Atlas first. Then, take out those Engineers, to avoid them setting up turrets. Meanwhile, my squad is focusing on those Guardians, in different Places.

After I finish them off, I help my squaddies. I usually use Singularity (With Liara) or Javik (Pull). That mission I took Javik with Area Pull and James with Grenade Radius. Had Guardians on that side that was messy and used Pull, then Grenade.

As a Soldier, when I rarely need it, I use a well placed Concussive Shot.

If you go up the ramp to where the guardians come out you can ignore the Atlas since it can't fire at you while you are in that corner.

Thanks guys! The Atlas isn't a problem for me, it's everything else and being on Insanity and not having spent those points. This room kicks my ass like nobody's business. The shyguys aren't a problem thanks to you guys. The problem... is mostly ME and my incompetence! Forgot how this game kicks my ass. Thanks for pointing me to that corner, I'm going to have to use every advantage for all these Cerberus guys. What an awful situation.

This is one of the relatively more difficult sections in the game partly because of the pathfinding, and partly because of the stage of the game.

Typically the squad will teleport into the room if you move far enough from the door, but then they may be surrounded.

If you move up the ramp to the right out of the LOS of the Atlas while spamming the form up key, then you can get them to teleport behind you.  Or you can stand in the door and order them into the room, although they usually hesitate.

I used that corner on my very first playthrough. When Guardians attacked me from behind it was... problematic :D

The problem of that section comes from the large concentration of enemy troops in a single location. Divide and conquer works here as well as everywhere else. If you have Sabotage, that section becomes a joke :D I did it without shooting a single shot (though dealing with the Atlas was quite tedious). Starts from 5:27

One thing to note, one of the biotic artillery strikes works as Lift in ME1. You can see it in the video at 6:48

Sniper rifle singularity and overload, keep a close eye on the ramp or you will be overrun early from the right.

If your shep has pull it's going to help start at the base of the ramp, switching from cover behind those squares to avoid grenades. Take out the guardians either through the mail slot or ripping their shields off and make your way past the first square on the ramp and take cover, focus on engineers in front and Centurians on your right, try to cover the staircase to prevent engineers getting up to the top.

Don't press up the ramp till you have room enough to target the turrets (take out the shield generator at the top.) Then take the position yourself and take out the shield generator below you. Clear the area below don't leave yet, walk down the stairs and grind down the atlas mech from cover directly in front of it. Using tech and biotics abilities.

Never rush up the ramp before the enemy is set up there, a door will open with a room full of bad guys and you're done.

Alright guys, you've helped me and it worked. Firstly, this is my first time on ME3 Insanity difficulty. EDI and Liara seemed to have this pact of being as useless as possible because they think it's funny. Moreover, they have some sexual fantasies of being revived by female Shepard, so they will fling themselves at turrets just to go down. So to deal with it I had to find extra safe spots for them ( cover out out of reach of turrets ) and order them to stay there. Liara behind the lowest block out of the Atlas's reach and EDI in the corner blocks with cover from two directions. Once that was done they were actually competent. But their damage seemed poor.

The guys up the ramp, for some reason, have trouble coming down the ramp. It's like they don't have permission. Anyway, it turned into a slow and drawn out battle about positioning and taking out turrets, till it was just the Atlas, thank goodness, which EDI's incineration was best for. And finally was allowed to save in the hallway.

In the second section it was just as bad, and died twice. Some sneaky engineer had ninja'd a turret at a high place just behind some rocks. After dealing with that I swear I saw both my teammates pretend to faint just so that female Shepard had to revive them, to bad everyone targetted me and it was game over. So I had to do the second section the weenie way by taking my squad back to the first area behind the wall separating the arena. I don't know how bad it would have been to tackle it the way intended, but EDI and Liara had some wimpy weapons and were better for me to pick their targets and use powers.

And so that was it. Grissom Acadamy completed. It was gruesome with the Atlas at the end, making 4 Cerebus people explode into paste before my eyes with rockets. And the combat was enjoyable, gruesome, and tense. So now I'm going to have to buy some better weapons, because my Shepard was using a Wraith 1 and Paladin 1, no third weapon so that I could get the power bonus of 96% faster power recharge. Thanks, guys!

In that part, the first thing I do is going to the top of the ramp you mentioned, then take out the generator that is there, and take cover. As soon as the Guardians appears, take them out (remember that Pull can un-shield them if you don't have AP ammo), then take your time on weakening the forces below you (in NG+, I use Flare on them...it's just a biotic artillery massacre that way). Once their numbers are diminished enough, Novacharge the rest (again, in NG+, the Talon + Power Magnifier + Heavy Barrel is just the perfect gun for a Vanguard. Also add Cryo ammo for extra slaughering).

I always leave the Atlas for the last. It hasn't got the angle to shoot you from the top vantage point, and if you "steal cover" while Novacharging, it won't reach you either.

I tell you, I was afraid to death of that ramp because there is a room full of sociopaths up there waiting for an excuse to have a case of the mondays. The Talon you mentioned, I never got it. It's supposed to be in Priority Citadel 1 or Citadel 2, and in a previous playthrough I think I found the room, but it was never there like it was stolen by the easter bunny. Anyway, I've since finished the game and started a new game +. Still no Talon anywhere, but my Wraith 1 is now a Wraith X. My power recharge rate has an insane 200% bonus because of the lightness of the upgraded Wraith and Paladin. If I just had only the Talon it could be slapped with a lighter materials mod and I wonder how big a recharge bonus that would be. Why does ME3 force you to have 2 guns? Anyway, Grissom Academy will be coming up again soon. I have lowered difficulty to hard because this playthrough is a "no menu combat pause" so that I can improve. Powers by hotkeys only. Single player combat is even more thrilling when I have to deal with live pressure and suicidal teammates. Also got From Ashes for Javik.

It... doesn't?

Also, you don't need Ultralight for the Talon, so long as you've chosen Weight over Squad Bonus (useless anyway) in the Assault Mastery tree. Even a Talon V with Heavy Barrel and Power Magnifier still allows you +200% if you don't carry anything else.

Also, the max bonus for encumbrance is +200%. No point trying to magnify it further...

Impressive playing. I usually go through it much faster, but I'm usually also much higher level and it involves much more dying, since I prefer doing it more flashy :D You going Iron Man, aka, no-deaths?

Also couldn't help but notice Liara dies less than Garrus. Ready to change your opinion about her being the weakest party member? :)

Not IronMan, although I did Grissom without dying. I died once on Palaven and once on Eden Prime :)

It's just an accident :P I'm going to use her and Javik at least before getting Kaidan. Will judge her performance at that point ;)

I don't understand why you didn't just go right up into that corner where the Guardians come out. Instead you came back down the ramp giving the Atlas the opportunity to take pot shots at you. That also gives Engineers the opportunity to set up turrets.

I don't like staying there. The location has little room to maneuver and limited cover. In the beginning you can jump around that small cover right next to the entrance and avoid enemy fire.

It also has to do with my bad first time experience when I stayed there only to be jumped by two Guardians that came from behind me. After that I always feel insecure when I'm there :D

I know what you mean. Sometimes you just get so burnt out playing a game, even if you really like it, that you just cannot stand to even watch someone else play it. I was like that for about the past month or so.

This room is failry easy if you do it right.

Immeditaly run up to the right next to the door where the guardians come though make sure your compainos follow you.

Blow the generator, take out the guradians out when they appear, then switch on the generator again for some extra defence.

Otherwise just watch out for gernades and fire at stuff.

Once cleared out go round to next part of room, then when triggered immideatly go back to first part of room and take out everyone with long range fire.

I'm a bit late to the party, but a couple of days ago during my latest playthrough I ran straight up to where the pylon is so my Infiltrator could snipe from there. But this time no Guardians came out, they spawned down the bottom of the stairwell this time. Never had that before.

Usually I only go 3/4 of the way up, set my team either side of my posi and take out the Atlas first, but also keep an eye out for the Guardians coming out of the door way near the generator. But this time I camped in the doorway and sniped everything then took out the Atlas.

Don't know if it's a one off thing, or maybe because I was standing in their spawn point the game put them somewhere else.
