Love them both, but felt so connected to the place and people in Kirkwall after spending so much time with them.

anders, Orsino, and Meredith...you have the oddest collection of favorite characters I've ever seen ;). Those were probably the 3 blandest/most annoying characters to me in DA2. To each his own though.

Not favourite characters - characters that still cause debate.  Seriously, you can easily start an argument about Anders today.  And the Orisino and Meredith issues are still as infuriating.  I think it is one of the really good things about DA2 that a character like Anders can still cause people to get into an argument.  Orsino and Meredith might not get the same, but the question of Meredith's motives and why Orisino is an idiot are good ones :D

I might be wrong, but after I saw a few comments in dozens of threads in this section, it's raising the question if people just miss Hawke and not the game, cause quite frankly, the game was really rushed and bad,

Well atleast the banter actually worked in DA2.

Not that that necessarily makes it a better game but it does make it annoying to spend hours questing in DAI with companions that never say anything. Sometimes, I feel like they should rename the game to "Dragon Age: Awkward Silence".

I agree with some of the above posters, I think DA:I has become my favourite of the series as an overall experience (story, combat, presentation, graphics, party members, environments etc.). However if I have to decide individually, I would pick DA:O in terms of story, DA:2 for combat, DA:I for graphics, DA:2 for your party members (although Dorian, Blackwall and Solas makes DA:I a close contender) and DA:I for environments.

I like DA2 over DAI more .

I like Varric better in DA2 then DAI....

I like Hawke in DA2 better then in DAI...

I like the recycled map of DA2 then the big large map and the grind of DAI .

I rather walk on the beach with Isabela and be attacked by Qunaris then walk in the Hinterland and be attacked by bears again and again .

I rather face Meredith again then fight corny....he is just so booring .

I rather go to the Hanged Man and have a drink then go back to Haven or Skyhold where my Hall is crammed by standing nobody and I wish they could just scram !!!

I rather have a difficult choice of siding with the chantry and templar vs the Mages then have to deal with Boring Alexius and Time Magic!! At least give me a renegade interrupt to Punch him at least once!

I prefer DAII. Though, the games should be considered together as a series, not as separated titles.

I prefer DA2.

I can go back again and again and again and play DA2 but with DAI, I beat the game once and I doubt I will ever do a 2nd playthrough.

People actually still argue about other people's personal preferences?

Sorry, it's just... of course people prefer different things. XD Personally I think for me... they might be tied?

On the one hand, I loved the writing in DA2, my Hawke, her relationships, Kirkwall, the DLC... I love, like Asakti said, that DA2 can cause arguments to this day because players can come out of it with such polarized ideas of what was right and what was wrong. I like the simpler scale of the arch, too, no saving the world this time, just one (highly skilled) person trying to get by in the hellhole that is Kirkwall.

But on the other hand, I also love things about DA:I. I love the worldbuilding and the lore, the level design (in terms of maps themselves - I agree they could have been better utilized in terms of quests, but!), the art direction, the storyline... It's a great, epicly-scaled addition to the series (to me, anyway), and there's a lot there to love. Or like, at least.

Both games have faults, just as they both have their merits, so it's not at all a stretch for people to have loved DA2 despite the fact that it was rushed.

I really liked how difficult combat was in DA2. But, the shield abilities in DAI were fab. (But I do prefer DA2 combat.)

Preferred the story in DA2. I was thinking about this the other day. I remember meeting Ketojan and going "WOOOOWWWW! A SAAREBAS!!!" Then, in DAI, I was sort of one myself. (Although obviously not.)

Being a Tal-Vashoth mage just diluted the whole concept of an oxman (woman, in my case) with magic. I'm no longer amazed by the terrifying power of forbidden magic among qunari and just like, "well, magic happens."

Maybe this is true. Maybe the qunari don't need to freak out over their magic users. Maybe they even make their magic users into terrifying monsters through their treatment, like tools and stuff.

But, I do miss being genuinely amazed by an aspect of the game that was previously hidden. I don't really know if there was that in DAI. For me, anyways.

That was an odd point to pick up. My apologies. I tend to ruminate on qunari.

To be fair, your character would never have been trained as a Saarebas under the Qun, so their magic could simply be more contemporary thanks to that. Same with their overall attitude as a Tal-Vashoth (or, really, just  Vashoth. That bugs me actually).

I did the same thing, female Qunari mage, and yeah, it was a bit disappointing for me as well, especially earlier on. Totally wanted to be some epicly cool escaped Saarebas-gon-Tal-Vashoth, but alas! Escapee parents instead. D:

I think I was hoping something about the big, horned race combined with magic would make them extra terrifying inherently. To at least justify their treatment under the Qun a bit. Or something. Because, prior to DAI, saarebaseses were scary. And sad. Mostly because there were so many unanswered questions about them. The Tal-Vashoth mage did answer some questions, simply by being herself. For example, she didn't sneeze chain lightning like the saarebaseses in DA2. (There really wasn't a lot of class/race specific dialogue for the protag in DAI.)

I know that being able to play as any race in DA is what many people really want. But, I think it can have a detrimental impact on the story. It's impossible to make the qunari protag significantly different from the others without blowing out your dialogue and voiceovers and stuff.

An escaped saarebas would have been amazing. But, I'm picturing practically everything about her dialogue etc having to be different.

I guess it just relies on the players imagination, too, when it comes to race. I'm just sad I lost the fear of saarebaseses.

I like them both (or all three to be honest =)). I rate DAI higher but they all have their different points of  value. The fact that you as Inq can be part of the party-banter is really cool. =) Snarky Hawke...;-). Origins of course has its origins which lends an enormous validity to the role-playing.

If DA2 and DAI appeared out of thin air with no context behind them, I would probably say DAI is the better game.

However, given the circumstances of their creation, given the very serious problems of previous games that BioWare claims to have 'fixed' in DAI, given the direction that DAI indicates BioWare is going, given what DAI indicates about BioWare's understanding or willingness to implement fundamental narrative principles, I would say that DAI is considerably worse.

DA2.  Loved the characters, loved the story.  Accepted the flaws.  We all have flaws.  Enjoyed the Cory fight in DAI...but the DA2 fight was better.  While Hawke didn't permakill Cory, they certainly kicked the everlovin' stuffin' out of him...without the Anchor.  In fact, that is kinda why I have a tiny issue with DAI.  I think Hawke SHOULD have been involved in the final battle.  The Grey Wardens weren't Hawke's mission, it was an excuse to remove them from the plot.  Hawke should have been there, at least involved when Cory went down for the final time.

Also, DAI wasn't standard Bioware.  The Inquisitor never went dark...not really.  The Warden?  Yes, they totally could.  Selling out children to be possessed, slaughtering mages, and making slaves of dwarves by bathing them in molten lyrium?  Yeah, DARK.  Hawke?  Totally sell out your friends...bye Isabela, enjoy the hospitality of the Qunari.  Want to ruin a potential relationship, and screw over Aveline?  OR, sell out Fenris to his old slave owner?  Plus all the other stuff.  Heck, Jade Empire allowed you to ENSLAVE your friends, AND a deity.  Shep could commit GENOCIDE, at least THREE TIMES.  The Inquisitor?  Didn't sacrifice anyone...yes, they had to choose who to go to, but you never intentionally threw one of the two groups to the wolves.  Sure, you could let Celene die (which wasn't as hard as I thought it would be...huh, pretty easy actually), but never did you go to the depths of previous characters.  Pragmatic, yeah.  Utterly ruthless?  NOPE!  I didn't see any choice that didn't seem at least a little justifiable.  Hawke and Shep could do it for the lulz.  Punching reporters; kicking Eclipse out windows; mocking parents who were cradling their recently murdered children, and personally killing your own sibling...while I never did those, you did get the option to basically become the villain in many cases.  If you wanted to become the most horrible version of yourself (or, in some cases, a much better version  :P ), you could.  Inqy seems to be forced into the hero role in an almost Final Fantasy style way.

Plus, DA2 was my first DA.  My intro into the world.  Nostalgia can be a powerful thing.

I originally skipped DA2, because I hated the corridor run of a demo, and it had a lot of negative press about the scope and reused assets.  But at the bargain price of $8 (until yesterday) for the XBL version (360), and after all the time and love invested into DA:I, it was time to bite.  Sure, a lot of it has been spoiled by the new game, but I'll be glad to fill in the gaps since DA:O.

Interesting thread.  It only piques my curiosity further.  I'm not sure when I'll start on it, since Inquisition still owns my gaming time.  I don't want to be playing both games back and forth.  That would only make me suck at both.
