I wonder if it is possible to do a dire flail in NWN2? I.e. a chain (or hilt and chains) with a ball attached to each end. Seems like it could use the quarterstaff animations for the wielder, but then you'd have all those potentially messy swinging double animations for the chains. Just curious, really.

Anyway, I found an interesting bone axe here with some possibilities for creepy necromantic animation of the claws. Not sure if that is of interest to you, 4760, but there it is if you want it.

Is it possible? Yes:

This one looks weird because I tried with a clone (wondering if the animations could be mirrored if the rigged mesh was mirrored too). Obviously it's not working.

This quick test shows that "those potentially messy swinging double animations for the chains" will have to be done from scratch.

Here's a quick example (the handle needs to be longer, and the animations done more carefully):

I had a look at the axe and shield, and they look interesting. I'll first finish all the other stuff I've got in progress though (and depending on what they ask for the registration, I may not become a member).

I found some time to work on the model and the animations:

It's not ready for release though, as said previously "those potentially messy swinging double animations for the chains" are not potentially but definitely messy!

Anyway, here's a beta version if someone feels like testing and giving feedback.

It seems it was a good thing I got the whole whip conversation going, now we have two new weapon types coming along. Great work 4760! Merci pour les nouvelles armes!

And here's the new whip:

Surprisingly, I find the animation of the whip attack more difficult to create than the one for the dire flail.

Those dire flail shots do look rather striking, so to speak. :)

Anyway, here's a beta version if someone feels like testing and giving feedback.

Threw it in to my test module and gave it a shot. The attack and moving animations look really good but I saw one potential problem. It looks like the default stance works for female characters but not male ones. That is, when you're female the chains hang straight down but the male stance holds it at a slightly different angle so it juts out to one side, defying gravity. Might be part of the reason they made it so the standard flail is held coiled up.

Either way this is without a doubt one of the coolest projects I've looked at. Working with nwn2 since release and I always figured the flail was a bit of a black box, it's awesome to see that proven wrong.

I may just have put the female stances in the file (can't tell for sure, not in front of the computer). Easy to fix though: copy the w_direflailFR*.gr2 files and rename them w_direflailMR*.gr2 (with * having the same meaning as in the old DOS days...)

Thanks for the comments!

Here's what I mean. The male stance has the item held differently, so it needs a different animation from the female one if you want it to hang straight.

Ah, ok, got it. I'll fix it as soon as I can. Thanks for the feedback.

J'aime les animations de cravache! Various creatures and people in my module need to be disciplined... yes...

Maybe there's one hell of a breeze? Or perhaps something highly magnetic in that chest.  :)

From a real-world perspective, such a weapon would probably be more dire to the one trying to wield it in combat.

True. But we could still add a feat, only available for those with epic profiency with flails, to be able to wield this kind of weapon.

Well there was the Cumber Jung; an (asian) Indian weapon resembling the dire flail.

Personally, I think it should just require an exotic weapon feat. Otherwise nobody would use it.

I concur, the corresponding line in baseitems.2da has been updated accordingly.

Too many other things going on, I decided to upload the dire flail as is (on the Vault and Nexus). When things calm down I may work more on this project. In the meantime, maybe someone will find it useful, who knows?

I think this has a high "coolness" factor to it (as does your whip), so I'm sure we'll see some use in future modules. Perhaps the weapons could even be retrofitted to some older modules? Maybe somebody will mod it into the commercial campaigns? I could see Neeshka or Qara wielding a whip and perhaps Zhjaeve with a dire flail.

Really Stretchy?

Honestly don't know, that's like nothing I've seen, and I've seen most of them.

I wonder, since you're makng your own bones there, are you able to make a simple footman's flail, in either the souped-up threshing-flail, or staff-and-ball variety?

I'm not sure I understand. You mean, in addition to the existing flails?

It looks a little like a kusarigama, although that used a kama with a weight at the end of the attached chain. Maybe a chigiriki?

It would probably be really difficult to direct the spikes at the end of the chain. Still, it's a fantasy game, so why not?

If you're looking for other weapons to animate, there's always the two-handed flail. (Basically a reinforced grain flail with metal spikes.) :) In D&D, I think it was called a staff-flail.

Ed.: Oops, I guess that's a repeat of Happycrow's post.
