Generally, if Hawke has to deal with it, someone's screwed up big time.

Lowtown has had giant Demon invasions for years so acting like it's something special is really an odd thing to do (though it's always bad), and Merrill's not one to summon Demons. She will literally tell you this to your face. The point of going to Audacity when he's trapped and sundered from the Fade isn't to summon him, it's to talk with him carefully.

"He can't possess me, I'm too powerful and smart to be possessed"

remind me, what kind of demon is Audacity?

Well, the former wouldn't happen because Merrill was only willing to talk to Audacity due to Audacity being bound,

As opposed to literally every other demon in game which she actively approves of talking to and working with.

and the latter wouldn't happen of its own accord--until there actually was the giant demon invasion in Lowtown, but that happened due to circumstances Marethari couldn't possibly have known about (and even then, it's at least still not an abomination).

As soon as an abomination is formed, it's only goal is to bring more of it's kind into this world. That's lore 101.

No, it's because Audacity is bound and can't do anything outside speaking, until Marethari releases it. And Merrill was still worried about being possessed despite having no direct cause.

I'm still curious how many people who go against Merrill end up supporting Solas (outside of the realm of Thedas I mean).

Because damn.... I really would like to know.

No danger in talking to a pride demon clearly...its not like they'd lie....

Er, Audacity wasn't an abomination until Marethari made herself into one.

Solas is capable of realizing "hey don't make deals with demons" spirits = good, demons = bad

<Looks around thread> I'm agreeing with Steelcan and Br3admax?  Is it opposite day?  This never happens.  What's going on here?   ;)  [cognitive dissonance]

Sundermount. You know, when we first met her. And the "cleansing" the mirror. Blood magic doesn't just work because we want it to. She even admits she summoned a "spirit."

He would possess Merrill as soon as he was through the Eluvian. The entire point.

Nice try, but it's more like

Hawke: You want to ask me to help you summon a demon?

Merrill: I would never ask you to do that!

I'm beyond irritated at the stubborn head-in-the-sand mentality people express. You literally hear in-game that the ****** demon is bound to a statue and sundered from the Fade, trapped there and so weakened he can barely do anything other then whisper sweet nothings in the ears of people.

The damn bloody short story tells you that the closer you are to him, the louder he gets. And if you're too far away you can't ****** hear him at all.

Would demons do that?  Find mages and lie to them?

DAO established that Merrill knew Dalish healing magic (taught to her by the Keeper) that in its raw form was able to combat the taint in Mahariel. Using blood acts as an amplifier like lyrium.

Put two and two together

gameplay/story segregations

And in the story, Hawke has killed Demons, Darkspawn, Qunari, Dragons, and an Ancient Tevinter Magister.

Right, she'll just summon one on her own, or make deals with one

this is why we need Circles

Well, if demon summoning is that safe...

Something it wouldn't be able to do any more easily than any other demon once banished to the Fade.

Solas is capable of realizing "hey don't make deals with demons" spirits = good, demons = bad

He also tells you that if you believe something is a Demon, it'll be a Demon. Thought is a great influence on a spirit's persona, apparently.

But thank you for proving my point. Solas, the man who says blood magic is okay if properly used and maintained and regulated, is somehow alright whereas Merrill -- who says the same exact ****** thing -- is stupid for it. Merrill, the person who says all spirits are dangerous and worked on her own on the Eluvians for seven ****** years using lore she gathered (per Gaider) until she hit a standstill, is an idiot while Solas, the man who actively seeks out spirits as well and also knows of their danger, is somehow okay for it.

Thank you so bloody much for proving my point.

Merrill never tells you to make deals with Demons willy-nilly, nor does she say "MAKE A DEAL WITH IT, MAKE A DEAL WITH IT". What she does say is that you can play a demon before it plays you.

And you can. And if you do that type of thing, she's supportive of it.

Not for me.  I disagree with Solas and Merrill.  Merrill and Sebastian are the only DA2 companions who I end up on the rivalry path with and, while I start strong with Solas, I quickly lose approval with him in my 'canon' decisions.  It's probably telling that the mages that I enjoy the most are Wynne, Vivienne, and Dorian.

Solas also recognizes that Blood Magic is dangerous, it can be used like any other magic but it can also lead to obsession.
Furthermore, Solas is actually smart enough to not make deals with demons, unlike Merrill.  (He's also a quasi divine figure so comparing him to a moronic mortal like Merrill isn't really a good idea)

Merrill doesn't recognize the dangers posed by demons, Solas does, that is the difference.
