Hey gang, just finished my first play through of the SP campaign and I'm ready to dig into the MP. I played enough matches to unlock a few characters and I immediately fell in love with the Katari. In looking for advice on how to build him up, most of what I've read focuses on hitting hard deeps, but in looking through the Kataris skills, I had the thought of building him more of a support CC off-tank.

If you spec Charging Bull, Mighty Blow, Pommel Strike and Grappling Chain you get two knock downs and two stuns. You could also toss in War Horn for the AoE fear. Thats a lot of control and while the dps will suffer, it will allow you to lock down a good portion of any fight while the mages / rogues deal out the heavy firepower.

Anybody tried this and have thoughts? I'd like to give it a try, but if it's not really viable, Ill stick with the standard 2H damage plan.

I personally feel that a Katari should be as fearsome on the battlefield as a reaver but sadly it seems to need a buff to contend. It can be made to work with the right build and skills on Perilous, but their survivability is often in question.

Whirlwind is a blast to use though, especially with an Arcane Warrior(Pull of the Abyss) or Keeper(static cage) grouping up enemies for you nicely. Def try that skill out even though the damage looks lackluster on paper it seems to exceed what is written.

Pommel Strike often misses(much like Twin Fangs for Alchemist/Assassin) so it can be frustrating for awhile but you will get better at figuring out which situations will cause the misses and reduce them a lot.

My last thought is that he sure seems slow and clunky so maybe I should buy a controller and try him on that, the way he reacts it seems like maybe a controller is what he was meant to be played on.

After seeing some other threads with people going down the right tree for more survivability, I promoted again and gave it another shot. To the Death is very cool skill which generates tons of guard, but, from my own experience, without the defense bonuses that the shield bearers get, the guard is lost immediately. The defensive build is better for bosses and revenants, but I've promoted again now and have only 2 points in the defensive tree and 18 in offense.

Going offensive like I am probably requires better gear though, so I would take the defensive route first. And if you're spending the points to get to warhorn, you should pick up to the death while your down there.

Fearsome as a reaver? The only thing I fear with a reaver is that I'm gonna have to keep reviving him.

LOL well on Perilous true, but no true Reaver should drop on Threatening or Routine. I was more referring to the speed at which you can attack and feel of the character. Reavers are an absolute blast until you hit Perilous.

Charging Bull, Whirlwind, Mighty Blow, War Horn.

Whether it's with Support or alongside an actual tank/Reaver, you become a great Crowd Controller in your ability to knock down groups, debilitate them, or just hit a crap ton of them at a time. With passive skills buffing damage on nearby deaths, you can become a terror in close range with a good melee weapon and these thoughts in place.

Just know when to jump out of the battle when things get too dicey. You don't have the defensive ability of the Legionnaire, the Support of the Templar, or the recovery of the Reaver.

...I don't understand why.

Because all the other characters don't need much in the way of build talk?

Because we had Legionnaire threads for two days straight?

Because science?

Lol, there is a lot of love for the Qun today! I think its because the Katari is one of the classes that we all want to be viable, but it has a much smaller "sweet spot" than alot of the other classes. Because of its skill set, it can be versatile in its application, but takes some subtle chicanery to really make the Kat purr.

Thanks for the input gang! Come hell, high water or demon commanders, its gonna be a blast figuring the big lug out!

"Figuring it out" = waiting for a balance patch.

The class is borked in its current implementation.

Katari seems like a waste of space in a group.

Charging Bull, Whirlwind, Mighty Blow, War Horn.

Whirlwind seems like a fun skill, I'll grant you.  But if your goal is effectiveness, it's probably one of the worst skills in the entire game.

Trigger -skill increasing damage on nearby enemy death- after you've knocked people down and have them panicked? Combine this with a team effort and you can mow people down.

...the problem is that he requires a lot of support...and whirlwind can be blocked by a small sword. HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE.

Arguments like these keep being used to defend the state of kataris and its pretty much the worst argument ever.

A team can carry a lvl 1 naked alchemist through perilous. That doesn't mean naked lvl 1 alchemists in perilous are viable.

By saying "katari is good with support from their team!" is moot because any other class is better EVEN WITHOUT support from their team. So if team support is brought into the mix, any other class is STILL better than katari.

Math.

You'll notice how I then said 'the problem is that he requires a lot of support'. In other words, we are in agreement.

I don't deny that he needs calibrating, but co-op is meant to be a group effort, where everyone contributes to achieve victory. There are Tanks, damage dealers, de-buffers...then the Arcane Warrior who does everything. All of them contributing to victory and working with one another. The Katari, in his current state requires more effort on the part of the user and the group, but can still contribute (and still needs calibrating).

*try reading this post in Loghain's voice. It's silly*
