So healing and blood magic were both cut off from the game, the ones that were there in both the prior games. They did the same to Berserker, Duelist and Shadow too. Do you think there will be Specialization dlc, where we unlock more specializations for our inquisitor?

I know I want to play both as a spirit healer, and blood mage. Duelist will be fun too.

Berserker would be cool, especially since Dwarf Warrior is a playable thing again. Maybe the Berserker's first power could be a passive that lets the warrior dual wield 1h non-dagger weapons, and allows them to build guard on basic attacks, and they could have special attacks and utilities that spend guard. Just a quick design theory I thought of just now.

The absence of the duelist spec was kinda disappointing. In DA2 you could tank the game with duelist Hawke or Isabela, and it was a lot of fun, so I was personally kinda sad to see that option was no longer available. Though I could see why they might've decided to remove it, since that playstyle offers a lot to dagger fighters and practically nothing to a bow rogue (Bow tank? /nope). Since you're locked into your spec in this game it would be kind of horrible to go duelist as an archer and find nothing that supports your playstyle. And trying to design a spec that could let a dagger rogue tank and still offer something viable to archers would be rather difficult. I hope they can eventually do it though because dagger tanks are awesome.

I can also understand why they didn't do Blood Magic since a number of important main characters in DA:I would probably freak out if you became a blood mage. But I'd still love to see it return as an option, somehow.

I could see more specializations, but probably not Spirit Healer and Blood Mage.

The game isn't really designed around being able to spam healing spells and it would break things if you could. Blood Mage would need quite a bit of work if you wanted to have it working within the story. You're surrounded by people who would freak out if they discovered you were a Blood Mage.

On the plus side mages got three new trees entirely. I think Bioware settled on the warriors in the first game (tank, party support, DPS) but haven't quite worked out what they want from the others yet.

Quite frankly... they should bring back the classes, specializations & skills from DA:O (along with stat allocation). It wasn't perfect, but it allowed us greater freedom in what we wanted our characters to be than the extremely limited current system.

Shapeshifter would be a most welcome addition for my Mage playthrough.

Did it? Dump all player character points into Diplomacy (or whatever it was called) pick your least favourite character to be the potion maker, everyone else does combat tactics. Same with stat allocation. It was almost always the two stats per class you bulked up, tempered by gear requirements.

With the crafting system in game I can customise my character to a far, far greater degree than I could in Origins. What is the net difference between levelling an unusual stat to wear the really cool armour, and having the really cool armour raise that stat?

The game forces you into the role of playing the good guy saving the world, I don't see blood magic coming back any time soon. Healing is too hard and boring for console gamers so that was taken out. It's all about action and feel good story with equality and bla bla

Oh noes, not equality!

Blood magic was handled poorly from a story point of view in the previous games. I wouldn't want to see it back unless they could get the world to react to it properly.

I don't think they will do it. Story wise, it should stay on Dalish mages only, if they restrict specializations by race, it would be very difficult.

Mages in general were handed poorly, especially in DA2. When Meredith finally told me directly that I was a mage during the end of act 2, I thought she was probably the only one with sense enough to recognize the six foot tall staff dangling from my back all the time.

Yeah, I get that DA:O had you wielding your Grey Warden exemption card, but it never was clear how in DA:2 you couldn't protect Bethany but could protect Merrill, Anders and yourself.

When we get the next game set in Tevinter it might have a chance at a comeback.

Another thread got me thinking about this. I think it's doable.

I think, if a future expansion allows us to take more than one specialization, it would be eminently possible to reinstate both blood magic and spirit healing, as long as it's integrated into the story. And by integrated, I mean "events lead to your PC being possessed by a spirit" and not "spec time, let's choose spirit healer." The way healing was treated in the last couple of games was due to a story/mechanics disconnect - the lack of quick healing in DAI is in accordance with the time and difficulty of actual healing magic and the extreme rarity of spirit healers. Plus - possession. Are some of your companions, and whoever else finds out about it, willing to differentiate spirit possession with demonic possession? I can think of some that might not. Likewise, Blood magic. Cassandra/Vivienne? Probably not okay with blood magic. Someone's gonna turn on you and leave, maybe even fight you.

I like this idea.
