Is the game updating slow for anyone? Because it's going really slow for me.

Hmm, I guess some people are not familiar with Steam and modern era PC gaming but this is has been the standard for some time now.
In fairness, it helps the developers keep everyone on a level playing field and makes support easier because you don't have people lodging support tickets over something that has been patched 5 patches ago. Also frequently bugs being fixed are pretty serious and features being added are things that meant to be or should have been added anyway. Developers are not adding things just because and they aren't intentionally breaking things with patches. If a patch is being pushed then it's something that is needed.
I understand people's reluctance with patches sometimes causing new problems but really if that happens the users need to make it known and it will be taken care of. In this particular case a new hotfix has been pushed in a little over a day so they definitely are responding to problems with their patches and taking care of it.
This isn't the disc based era of gaming and I just don't think we will ever go back to go hunt around for the patch yourself and manually install it, nor do I think we should.
Sometimes patches change how the game works for specious reasons. Like fixing exploits.
DAO patch 1.02 nerfs spell effects. I didn't want that, so I used a mod to undo the change.
DAO patch 1.03 made lieutenant rank enemies unshatterable. I didn't like that, so I used a mod to undo the change.
NWN patch 1.03 disabled friendly fire for enemies. I didn't like that, so I spent years playing an unpatched game (and unable to play the expansions).
In each case, those changes were made not because they were fixing bugs, but because the game didn't play the way the devs had intended. But I don't think they should be trying to produce a specific gameplay experience. We should each be free to play the game as we see fit.
Patching need to be optional, or undoable, so that we can test our mods or playstyle against the patch to see if it works in a way that makes the game better for us. I know BioWare thinks their patches make the game better for most people, but there is no person in the world who is "most people". Each of us is an individual, with individual preferences.

You know I am intimately familiar with steam and modern PC gaming. That doesn't mean I share your opinion. I can see the need for mandatory patching for multiplayer games, but since I don't play multiplayer, I find the whole mandatory patching irritating.
Edit: And error reporting is a whole different animal. Obviously if you're experiencing issues necessary to request a support ticket you should attempt to update to the newest patch first. But even in this scenario, patches don't need to be forced upon players to that effect.

How are people playing this unpatched without playing in offline mode?
If I try to play in online mode origin refuses to launch the game.

I don't think its possible to launch the game online without updating.

Added the mini-map ping locations
and fixed the cutscene hangs.
Happy.
