Need help with 2H warrior on nightmare

Seriously, the 2h warrior was my main character on Origins, I used him in DA2 even if it was nothe as good as before, but now in inquisition I just can't keep him alive.
I just started my second run and I switched to nightmare, I'm at the hinterlands so at the very beginning, but still I can't figure out how to fight.
Not being able to set up a proper guard as Cassandra and with only one mage casting Barrier I can hardly survive in the close fight, not speaking of range enemies that simply smash me before I can even call mommy to save me.
Tactical camera can help but it cannot do miracles and also I cannot really spend 20 minutes on every damn rift I have to high five.
It seems like this warrior is way weaker than the tank and not even close to rogue deadly DPS, so I need someone explain me at least how to stay alive!

Send your tank in first. Don't take the initate aggro.
Pull 1 ranged in with your Grappling Chain.

Do you have both the taunts? Until you do, it's difficult to keep complete aggro.
I personally found Charging Bull - with some careful positioning - very helpful for intercepting baddies.
Also, 2H warriors start with War Cry I think, so make sure that it's disabled in AI tactics.

Not yet, but I honestly feel weird that staying alive with a warrior heavy armored is so related to someone else getting hit as much as possible in my place...Do you have both the taunts? Until you do, it's difficult to keep complete aggro.

Block and Slash as well as Charging bull are your best friend. I'm constantly pausing on my warrior when I see someone attack me, I pause, switch to them, and block and slash. This gives me guard, knocks them down, gives me some breathing room.
Ranged enemies are awful on nightmare, take out archers first, use grappling chain to bring them in close. If you can, pull out some early eldrich combos. Cassandra can War Cry a group, then payback strike stunning a few, then that's when you have your mage immolate, weakening all of them.
Besides maybe whirlwind, there is nothing really all that great about the 2h weapon tree after flow of battle and denting blows. Stick to Vanguard and Battlemaster, that's where it's at.

only in the beginning, later on it gets much easier. especially with fade-touched obsidian and silverite

Both those Fade touched items give you guard on hit.

Turn the Bolt and Turn the Blade. Get those or stay out of melee range.
Guard is indeed useful, but only if you get good damage mitigation first. Without good damage mitigation, even full Guard will melt in 1-2 hits.

Alright, thanks everyone for the tips, I'll try to survive until I can unlock the abilities you've listed!

Agreed. I also find Combat Roll to be essential (after getting those passives).

And then I just use chain and the smashing to ground ability? Or other powers are worth it?

I'm assuming you want to make a 2H DPS? In that case, all the basic 2H abilities are fairly lackluster for DPS. When you unlock specialisation, become a Reaver and spec out of 2H tree entirely and get a full set of Reaver abilities. If you become Templar instead, then your DPS will never ever be anywhere close to any other DPS class and ultimately the character will be limited to a more support role.

And what about Champion? I'm still not sure about the spec, because I'd like to go for a reaver, but from what I've understood it's all based on low health=+damage, which seems quite a risk on nightmare to me considering how hard I manage to stay alive now...
