I mean in Origins he was this annoying ****** almost like a Templar in training , Then in DA2 this ****** slowly become kinda badass lol when they first showed him trying to scare an answer out of his comrade my first thought "whoa this guy is kinda cool" then when I found out it was Cullen "whaaaat that's Cullen!?".
How did Cullen become so popular? did people find him much more interesting then the other side characters? or was it simply they had much more to work with on him other then ugh idk , Gorim for an example.
How did Cullen become such an importent character?

IDK I killed Leliana off and she is here. I dislike Cullan and he is promoted to here...I may be the "Inquisitor" but i am Qunari Tal Vashoth 1st and think that the Chantry is a pile of Hogwash. I agree stopping Cory is needed, just shouldn't be all about helping the humans prop up a silly religion.

A female mage had the option to flirt with Cullen back in DAO and he obviously had a crush on her, but ran away out of embarrassment. I remember comments back in those days from the players wishing it'd have gone somewhere and the writer was floored at the reactions/popularity of the character because they hadn't anticipated it. It's one of those things that gain momentum over time just like Varric and his romance novel parodies when it turned out he wasn't going to be a romance interest after all.

It started with single flirt option in origins. Then fan explosion happened which was something like with this Barris guy now.

I'm not a fangirl, but I like him and I think his presence resonates within the game.

He had a crush on the female mage PC and ever since then he has infested the minds of players and thus created a following behind him. It is literally the only reason he got as far as he has as of now. Sure writers will claim it wasn't for pandering. They'll claim the felt he had potential to grow as a character, but in all reality hes there for the fans who swoon over him.

This. That's not saying he's a bad character. But his origin (pun intended) is fan service and he grew from there.

Popularity allows minor characters to return, provided they can. They might have even brought back Lilley from DA2 if she was not always killed.

If you're interested in seeing how a side character can become so powerful through the influence of a thousand fangirls, simply visit the Ser Barris thread and witness history in the making. Similar starts to the Cullenite movement. Ser Barris the templar romance in DA5 confirmed. I'd put money on it.

Why do people always say that it is the flirt option you get in DAO? Cullen caught my attention because I felt empathy for him. You see him as a really nice, normal young guy and then see all that completely destroyed. I may not have agreed with his point of view after his torture but I definitely felt sorry for him. It was enough to catch engage me and keep my attention to see where his character lead in DA2. Again, I didn't agree with his attitude towards mages in the beginning on DA2 but I really liked how his character growth went throughout the game, seeing him start to question what was happening around him, slowly gaining enough of his old self back to see that sh*t was wrong.
I like how far he has come over the three games. Cullen is a good guy and I am happy to see that he has finally found his way. I know a lot of people like to think that we are a whole pile of woman with nothing but air between our ears drool dripping from our lips but we do actually indulge in rather engaging and intelligent conversations from time to time. And if you think BioWare just kept chucking him in to keep a couple of hundred people happy when there are hundreds of thousands of people that play the games, will then, I would have to start questioning BioWare's business sense.
He dose have a great lip scar though and that can take you far in imaginary worlds.
