I don't think I've ever been this bothered by the lack of ambient music in a game before.

BioWare, you hired Trevor freaking Morris.  And from what I can tell of the soundtrack I paid for, he was worth every cent you paid him.  But then why on God's green earth is there no ambient music when I'm exploring?  It's the most critical moment to have music.  At least I think so.   Ever since I started playing this game on the PC, I have found myself hitting ALT + TAB and visiting YouTube for background music and then going back to the game way, WAY too often.  Like....almost ritualistically often.  I kept wondering why I did this because I always prefer the game's own sounds and music to listening to my own stuff while playing.

And then it hit me.

This game under-utilizes its own soundtrack!

For some reason I get a lot more music in my second (and current) playthrough. Could be a bug, related to the banter bug/overall sound issues.

Hmm....interesting.  This did not occur to me.

I just play the soundtrack on my iPad. The game was designed to have long periods of silence for reasons that are beyond me.

The cynic in me thinks they're taking another cue from the MMO - where the ambient soundtrack will only play every once in a while.

I...can't even remember if I've heard music or not.

The only music I can clearly remember hearing in this game is the bard singing.

I miss some of the old music. DA2 had a beautiful soundtrack.

I think I've heard music in Val Royeaux once. I was so happy. It cut out once I got too close to the Bard, and didn't restart. Its a shame, because the Orlesian music is AMAZING.

Why would this be a thing in an MMO? I'm honestly asking - I don't get why there wouldn't be music.

It shouldn’t be long periods. Music should trigger every 3 minutes or so.

I kind of like it that way; ear doesn’t become fatigued and begin ignoring it.

To me that's a long period.

Ambient music comes and goes depending on the scene, approaching the location of a quest, possible danger around you.... Otherwise, you hear the birds, and the wind and ram snorts that sound like horse snorts.

I actually rather enjoy it. The music is used very effectively in story missions (In Hushed Whispers and In Your Heart Shall Burn have incredible scoring), and the music can be all right for cinematic sequences.

I don't think exploration is frenetic enough that constant background music would be very desirable. I much prefer the ambient sounds of the location and action over having the same tracks looping endlessly, especially since there's so much downtime.

Music is still there for staged encounters and certain regions in the exploration areas, so it's not as if there's no music at all.

I just wanted to chime in to say I really noticed this. Normally it can get tedious with too much music, but it's almost too scarce for my tastes. :3

Weird, the music is one of the few things in DAI I have nothing but praise for. I was never struck by long stretches of silence (except for a couple times in the Hissing Wastes). Some people have reported success with the party-banter bug by going through their journal and tracking all their completed quests so that the journal recognizes that they are actually complete. That might help with the ambient music as well.

Or the play the title song, over and over, and over and over and over again. I went through my files and deleted it.

Same here ...

I am playing on PS3 and all I here is silence. And I too hate that!

Vast game, vast project, vast problems - I guess ...

I also have a digital deluxe edition which includes the OST, but I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet. I still have to download it.

I found this info here:  http://blog.bioware....in-inquisition/

It is an entry from an official Bioware blog called: "How banter and music work in Inquisition"

I've thought the exact same thing! I really wanted these options for music:
- loop music
- frequent
- normal
- rare
- off

No idea.  I've played RIFT, WoW, EQ2, DAoC, and ToR.  All of those games had constant looping background music unless you shut it off.

That said, I find myself agreeing with the OP.  I would have preferred the settings Slapstick has suggested.  Or at least a way to turn off/on looping music.

I have my iTunes playlist going while out on missions. Kpop and Dragon Age rocks.

I have found that Dragon Age in general goes quite well with a mix of southern fried metal, blues and the DA soundtrack.

Nothing like a song called "P*ssed Off and Mad About It," while clearing out sections of the Deep Roads.

Eh, it can work to a game's benefit sometimes to leave the normal sound effects as the audio focus over a philharmonic playing every time you want to walk through unknown territory. Dark Souls does this a bit, using musical bits only during Boss Fights or Very specific locations.

Can't say it bugged me in DA:I.

By the sounds of it from reading that blog, it seems as it was intentional, not a good design choice in my opinion.

I got nearly insane after spending alot of time in the exalted plains with only one explore sound track, that one that has the same melody for ever.
