I don't think I've ever been this bothered by the lack of ambient music in a game before.

Why would this be a thing in an MMO? I'm honestly asking - I don't get why there wouldn't be music.

Depends on the MMO. It's probably to avoid getting burnt out on the soundtrack or because they know after awhile people will be listening to music outside of the game while playing. Still, some MMOs have options to loop the music.

The long periods of silence in DA:I are very noticeable and I like to have music constantly playing. If I wanted to run around the woods in silence I could do that in real life. Part of the fun of video games is that an epic soundtrack should accompany even mundane tasks.

I think this is one of the larger issues as well. When music does eventually trigger, it sounds great, but I find myself almost preferring that it doesn't because it's so short and such a unique occurrence that I really notice when it stops, and it's disappointing when it disappears so quickly.

Combat especially should be adjusted, playing in purely tactical view, there are no other ambient sounds to notice while I move the cursor around or whatever. I'd prefer that music were playing almost 100% while in combat, it's probably closer to 2%.

This game under-utilizes its own soundtrack!

I totally disagree. To me the music is placed at the right moment every time I hear it, and it's glorious. If we had ambient music playing on a loop in every zone it would get stale, like with the music for the World of Warcraft zones. At the start of every WoW expansion I play with the music on while I'm leveling through all of the zones. I thoroughly enjoy it, but the continual repetition, even of a piece of music that I like, tends to degrade the specialness over time.

I've been playing DAI with full sound for 140 hours. There are a lot of environment sounds; not only nature sounds, but ambient NPC sounds as well that help to keep the environments alive. Music kicks in occasionally as you're traveling around, or when some significant event happens.

I highly recommend that people read the Bioware blog post about party banter and music in DAI.

it reminds of those website that  let you preview  songs off a whole cd for like 10-15 sec probaly some marketing bs to make you buy the soundtrack,   this game all time low man I remeber in one zone I heard the title track and some other song and some if it might be good but only play 5-10 sec which sucks ,I feel the title track is depressing  and the title screen is depressing with infinite generic templars and mages  that all look the same

I have ambient music, maybe I'm just lucky?

The cynic in me thinks they're taking another cue from the MMO - where the ambient soundtrack will only play every once in a while.

Wasn't there a twitter quote along those lines "the music is only designed to play in short occasional bursts" or something like that? Either way it's super disappointing and I end up listening to Pandora while exploring and songs play that are inappropriate to the setting (though my female elf's milkshake really does bring all the boys to the yard) but it's better than silence punctuated by footsteps and like...chirping birds or whatever.

The music is there, just on a different...frequency? Anyway, you have to mess with the audio settings, and make sure you have a surround system hooked up. I was wondering around, and then my heater turned off and I was hearing faint sounds, turned my surround sound speakers up, and sure enough they had some walking around music. It's not there if I don't have my sound bar on.

They explain it in the blog.

That's where I saw it (I got confused) anyway I think the decision was a horrible one and I don't care how "real" it makes things. It's like ME3 not having a final boss because it was too "video gamey." :(

Most of the time i hear only my character's footsteps and noise of my PC's cooler. Not good.

Mmmmmm...mmm... not a tad loud? does not drown your environment?

I turned the music volume down for that reason.

no ambient music ... except in skyhold. i get that battle music repeating over and over and over and over and over and over and over again ...

during ... everything i do in skyhold. dialogues, cutscenes ( except when the cutscene has a specific music added to it, that's the only time it stops )... i'm sitting there trying to romance sera and i hear the freaking drums of war ... which in all honesty ... kinda fit :))

But then why on God's green earth is there no ambient music when I'm exploring?

You're totally right. I don't know if they just never thought to make individual tracks for each explorable area or it's another bug (like the Skyhold drums) or it's the usual "We wanted ambient music but y'know... ran out of time  " excuse.

But yes, ambient music is noticeably lacking.

The only way I got the drums to stop was by entering and exiting the War Room.  That always fixes it for me.  I've also found out that the way to guarantee that annoying bug happens is if you FT from the War Table.  For the times you have to for a quest, when you get back to Skyhold, enter and exit the War Room.  It should make that stop.  I hope it works for you too.

will try that ... though i will admit it didn't bother me that much since i didn't spend much time in skyhold after the first hour or so. i usually just came back to modify my armor and then ft to whatever area. liked the view from the private chambers though. the first time i saw it i stood on that balcony for a few minutes, just admiring it and thinking how cool of a view it would be to have.

The ambient music for me starts to play, but as soon as I move 20-ft away, it always fades out.
