I would have dropped Varric for pretty much anyone else.. Cullen, Lysette, Harding, some random nug herder..

 

He added nothing to the game other then a "Tie In" to make it make sense...

None. I'm okay with not having a Mabari, didn't use them in the previous games. If I had to, though, I'd trade Cole, I guess.

The Inquisitor is a Marcher, not a Ferelden, so none of them. The HoF and Hawke were both Ferelden, so it made more sense.

Having said that, I am disappointed with how the mabari have been reduced to ravening packs of dogs you kill in this game. So much for the prized intelligent dogs that were Tevinter-mage-bred and bright enough to abandon the Empire for the Barbarians way back when.

Surprised so many people write Blackwall off as 'boring.' Banter bug needs to be fixed ASAP, there are some really great ones that made him much more appealing I found. 

Especially between Blackwall and Cole.

Yeah.. the lack of banter and the dialogue dead ends make a lot of characters who have interesting story.. less interesting.

 

Varric on the other hand.. is just Varric. been there done that,

I'd trade Blackwall in a hot minute for a mabari or wolf. I let his ass rot when the time came for what he did. Plus I really, really want a dog in this game.

Ah jeez, why don't you ask me if I want a piece of bread with googly-eyes glue to it. But if you said, "Who would I trade for Shale, or Shale like golem?" then we'd have something going here.
