Hinterlands Is Not a Good Experience the Second Time Around—Needs Focus

What a bizarre feeling.

The first time, there’s a vast, open world you just lose yourself in and amidst exploration somehow complete some objectives. Eventually you emerge and turns out you can go other places now.

This second time, I know exactly how much of all of the map is unnecessary for the goal of… well, I’m not really sure what the goal is. Getting 4 Power, I guess? And myriad ways to come by that power. I feel like I’m either going to be wasting effort, or time, or then not getting a good experience because I’m rushing through.

In a shocking turn of events, it’s not the first playthrough but the subsequent ones that would benefit vastly from more guidance—which isn’t to say that something more specific than “well there’s all this stuff you can do” wouldn’t be useful for newbies, too.

Even a simple checkpoint might be enough: the task could, for example, be either to close all the rifts (minus one?) because “that will let the Inquisition troops work to enforce peace in the fighting”, or perhaps preferably to establish all the camps (plus capture the Keep) because “that will pacify the area enough, and the rifts can be isolated until they can be handled”. This would give the Inquisitor-to-be a clear-cut first goal to achieve, and would provide ample opportunity to track the side quests along the way from rift to rift or camp to camp.

And then all that’s missing is a clear briefing explaining that that’s what needs to be done.

After this Val Royeaux could open up; then possibly subsequent missions in the Hinterlands—they, too, with a bit of focus.

On the upside, I’m actually getting banter this time around.

I agree. The first time around (I just got around to visiting other locations - not that I've ticked off every quest in Hinterlands - with ~12 hours clocked on the save game) the sheer size (and, I admit, the beauty) is breathtaking, and it's a nicely sedate place to find your footing... but MY GOD does it feel like a chore, in retrospect! I'm really not looking forward to a second playthrough.

Hinterlands isn't really meant to be played through. Just like the Storm Coast. They're both there primarily to give you Power to unlock other areas and story missions.

It's not a good area to play the first time around. I just started playing Inquisiton yesterday, and I'm in the Hinterlands now, and I HATE this area. HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT!!!

If there weren't so many **** people that needed saving and feeding and medicine-giving, and if there weren't so many open rifts all over the map, I'd skip this area. It's so big and rocky and hilly, and it's impossible to read the map, and it's impossible to know where I am, and every time I think I'm going in one direction I'm going in another. Or I'm on my way to a place I need and I run into a cliff or a mountain that I have to find my way around, or I'm going down a ravine that curves the other way so I have to go all the way back and then find a way around the ravine to get to my destination. And there's, like, a million subquests to do in every area. I can't just go to one place, complete a quest, then leave. No, I have to get sucked into every **** quest in the entire *** area, and they all segue into each other, and I'm literally driven to tears in frustration because I hate this area!!

Oh dear. Is this how abominations happen? :D

The minimap is pretty useless. I tend to use the blue marker on the big map to give myself a heading, and then just go by eyeball. But I digress…

I have to agree, by the time I got to the hissing wastes in my first playthrough (bout 100 hours in), I only had it to go other than the very last mission having just defeated ..

Spoiler
.. Now that I have started my second play through, I am at haven just about to go get the lumber outside the camp and I look ahead to how much endless grinding there was in the first game, save the game close the entire thing down awaiting some mates to come online for multiplayer because I just cannot bring myself to do the grind a second time.

I actually found the Hinterlands much more enjoyable the second time. The first time, I really appreciated the scenery but quickly found myself bogged down and frustrated with side quests. The second time, I knew exactly where to find the mage and Templar camps, which rifts I should close, exactly who the recruitable agents were, etc. I was able to get the important stuff done a lot more painlessly and actually got a real sense of accomplishment from getting stuff done instead of just frustration at facing an endless barrage of tasks.

I like it more and more each PT. There are so many different things to do. I never have to do the same thing and that helps for replayability and RP reasons.

My first character found the Carta dwarf note, and being a Carta dwarf herself, chased down that lead.

My second character prioritized helping the people in the Crossing.

My third character was all about down to business close the fade rifts and set up camps.

I think I'll have one that is a big nerd who wants to find all the Landmarks next.
