These countries primarily managed to evict Orlesian occupants through guerrilla tactics which does not necessarily make them more powerful militarily. Only Nevarra can really threaten Orlais.

True and I'll concede that Ferelden had to wage a long guerrila campaign that lasted decades to get their independence back.

But I don't know if Orlais is as powerful as people think it is? It's possible that like Tevinter, their reputation as a powerhouse has been a little exaggerated because of how powerful they used to be, so that no other nation is ever prepared to properly get into a contest of arms against them for fear that their reputation is still true and that they might lose badly?

The country/organization with the most powerful military is the country/organization that has the player characters backing.

Always has been, always will be.

It's confirmed to be Nevarra. Ferelden has the best warriors. Orlais the best paid military and best trained officers. Tevinter's is deadlocked with the Qunari's.

I thought DAI'd let us gather armies from each corner of Thedas to fight a cause -_-

It seems DAO was better storywise. I felt the Inquisitor did nothing more than just sit in his chair and press some buttons.

The warden move to a place, struggled, gather army... I really thought Inquisitor'd be more than that. :(

I enjoyed the debate. Also been interesting to see the different view points. Also fun to see where it went when I remembered a codex entry and brought it up.

Nevarra, Ferelden and the entire Free Marches beg to differ, having all kicked Orlais to the curb.

True perhaps with nevarra but with the latter two, that's like saying the Irish were powerful for gaining independence from the UK or Algeria from France, Colombia and others from Spain.

In Southern Thedas its a toss up between Orlais and Nevarra. Orlais has historically been the more powerful of the two, but has hit a rough patch over the last few decades, while Nevarra appears to be on the rise.

In Northern Thedas it is a toss up between the Qunari and the Tevinter Imperium. If the DA universe follows history (Tevinter being a Byzantium and the Qunari the Arabs or Turks), the Qunari are going to emerge triumphant.

The weakest military power in Southern Thedas is probably Kirkwall. In Northern it is probably Antiva.

The Qunari have a stronger army than the Tevinter.  The reason why it has been a struggle for the Qunari is because their forces are divided suppressing civil war and Tal'Vashoth.  Also because they're the invading force which always puts you at a disadvantage.  The Tevinter are basically Thedas' equivalent to the Byzantine Empire in its twilight years, the Qunari are the invading Ottoman and its inevitable the Tevinter Imperium will fall.

I'd say it is the Inquisition. At the end of the game you control half of Ferelden and southern Orlais. The templars and the grey wardens joined my ranks and the Divine as well as the orlaisian empress are both puppets to the Inquisition. Orzammar and Starkhaven are close Allied. Imo that is a force to be reckoned with

That is true but I eliminated Qunary because they are not really on the continent as the ottoman were not at first. Also is not like the real Ottomans because Qunary took most of Tevinter, Rivain and the Free Marches but unlike the crusades in real life against the Ottomans that failed and they kept the conquered teritory here the exalted marches did not fail and they lost those territories so no more similarities between them.

Ottomans actually did lose territory in the first crusade.

I am pretty sure they defeated the crusade and killed and ransomed thousand's of crusaders(especially french).

Having been defeated, does not mean you aren't the most powerful. It simply meant you didn't bring your full might to bear. Orlais is a large empire and can't bring their full power to bear in every fight they have. The Iron Hills debacle with Nevarra was barely even a war, same with the Free Marches, and orlais could probably wipe out Ferelden if it wanted to.

Orlais and Nevarra are rivals, but Orlais is probably the most powerful of the two.

In the first Crusade, the Christians retook Jerusalem.

I mean the crusades against the ottomans all failed. Not to take back Jerusalem.

But since Thedas is not following real world it can go the other way around too.

That is true as well.  Plus if it did, then Fereldan would be ruled by some Orlais guy called william.  IIRC the idea of Fereldan is if anglo-saxon england repelled William the conquerer. So one could have difference is in thedas. Perhaps Rivain falls to the Qun while Serhon is conquered by tevinter

Yes rivain does. they have openly converted to the Qun and the Qunari protect their own like the Arishok protected those elves from kirkwall.

no they haven't, parts of it are Qun sympathetic, but the actual Qunari were driven out after the Exalted march

Orlais is still the most powerful empire in game, with all that's happened. And even if you want to chock that up to money and trade, for some reason although that hardly makes any sense during a civil war, my main bro Gaspard gets that their **** together like that.

Actually Rivian has the only Qunari settlement on Thedas (Kont-aar). And their Andrastianism is mostly a formality. The people of Rivain follow the Natural Order.

Not hating. I'm pretty sure (though I can't remember where, WoT maybe?) that I've read the Nevarra has the largest military. And while I may be biased the only military edge Orlais has over the rest of Thedas are the Chevalier.

If Ferelden had the money to train their officers like the Orlesians Ferelden would be the big dick in southern Thedas.

And let's not forget that a farmboy turned bandit turned freedom fighter kicked the mighty lion out of Ferelden.
