Ok..i spent the better part of an hour or so trying to figure out how to beat that Ogre in the Tower for Lighting the beacon quest - i think my problem is i have 2 npc that are not clearly should be in my party - i got some tower guard and some Mage - forgot his name..
so i'm wondering if i need to start all the way over
or can i exit the tower and look for a better Party help?

I'm having the same problem. The Ogre is just too hard to beat, and my NPCs get better hits in than I do (I keep "Missing"). Don't want to start over earlier, but I will if I have to.

Your stuck as is. I rolled a rogue so I ended up with Random Mage, My Rogue, Alister, and Dog. Have the Mage cast Flame Weapon, use Alister as your tank and hope for the best. I have also seen kiting him around with your PC character or Dog, while having the others range him with mage/bows also works. It's not an easy fight, but honestly, it gets harder.
*NOTE* You might get unlucky and he grabs one of your party and beats them to death, this is ok, but if he drops 2 your usually fried and need to reload. It takes a little luck if you aren't kiting him.

Nah, that's way too early in the game to have control over who's in your party. I agree that the ogre was the first real challenge I had, but I beat him (on Normal) and so can you. First, feel free to modify the difficulty for that one fight. Second, you MUST learn to make use of pausing. The ogre is at his most dangerous when he is charging or grabbing--it involves a lot of pausing, of course, but pause it every time he looks ready to do something and pull your party members away. Don't forget your buffs--the cleric has Flaming Swords, and I was using poison, too, but that's not something everyone's guaranteed to have use for. Just remember this isn't an action game...you will -not- have time to control everyone in real time. And, of course, use up as many potions as you need. They're worthless if you don't drink 'em.

If you are playing on Hard difficulty he can be tricky.
Either tone down the difficulty or do a few cheap tricks.
The first is if you have a thief character save Dirty Fighting for when he grabs someone. As far as I can tell Dirty fighting never fails to stun the ogre and it will make him drop whoever he grabs so he wont kill them.
Second, make sure everyone has some sort of ranged weapon (mage staff works fine for the mage). Spread them out to the four corners of the room. Whoever the ogre chases make them run around the middle of the room with the ogre behind them. He will still connect some hits on you, but as far as I can tell he cant Grab anyone that is moving. When you get fairly low, drink a potion. When he switches targets, pause the game, move the character that was running around to a corner while you directly control the new target and continue doing it.
The mage does the most damage to the ogre, so don't let the mage die at whatever cost.

I couldnt find other help. I also couldnt find anyone to sell some stuff to ( I needed to make some potions). So I just put the game on easy to get past that point. Next play through I'll be more prepared.

It really has a lot to do with luck. It took me 2 tries on normal the first time because he would get a grab in at an inopportune time, and i couldnt heal the person he grabbed, then that person would be knocked out, then he had these backwards kick attacks to hurt my backstabber. In the end I found the best method was to switch to the person being directly attacked and just run circles in the room, he could catch up with the runner and I just nickle and dimed him to death. Inglorious but effective.

Kite him around with ranged attackers while your sorta tough guys hold him at the front, might script one tactics slot to use potions when low at health for all characters and bam
HOw did you guys get access to the dog early for the ogre fight? A poster above has him
also did your mage start with the heal spell cause my didn't
I wonder if temporary joinable npcs have random talents chosen?

The dog only came with human noble to start, and the mage was a tag along from the run up to the tower..he had the heal for me. Not sure if the spell loadout is random.

Then if he had the heal for you then its either random or scripted to be different based on what your main character plays as. I ran into whats her face (Morrigian?) and she didn't even have heal lol im starting to think none of the mages i meet will ever have heal. I have come to terms with it though and planned around it, though it may be expensive.

As wwurst stated, luck has a lot to do with it. It took me 2 times to beat it on Normal difficulty with 2 warriors (me and Alister), dog and the mage. I nearly beat him on the 1st attempt tanking with my warriors using flame enchanted weapons and Shield blast to stun and dog with the mage striking from a distance but was a bit too slow with a couple of health potions as I was waiting until they dropped to about 1/3 health before using them and the ogre managed to knock out both myself and Alister at the same time with a well timed charge just as I set them both to drink a potion.
Thinking that the tactics were sound and that I just needed to start healing at 1/2 instead of 1/3, I reloaded to try again. This time I didn't even have to worry about healing. The ogre went down in less than a minute. I managed to stun him right away with a Shield Blast and when the effect wore off the mage hit him with paralize. In all he got about 2 hits in and only Alister took any damage.
2 battles using the same tactics resulting in vastly different results. I'd say luck had a bit to play in that.

If you're a rogue you should be able to throw acid flasks, which hurt him prety badly. As long as he's tied up with Allister you can avoid friendly fire.

After one disastrous attempt to melee the ogre on Hard I switched out to ranged and managed to take it out on my second go. As someone said above, get the ogre to follow one of your characters around whilst everyone else peppers him with arrows/spells and with a bit of patience he'll go down eventually.

yeah that ranged strategy worked out well last night before i went to bed. I'm going to pay for staying up so late last night playing DA:O today at work.

like others i found kiting him to be the best. he is a rather luck based fight i think.
